Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

ferret it is never to late to join in. There are always projects on the go and I think Candy is an ongoing project.

VittysCardigan · 02/02/2017 18:04

MrsH - Thank you!

MrsDilligaf · 02/02/2017 18:15

Apologies in advance to anyone who has one of my squares in their Candy's Hug. Baby Dilligaf has a new favorite toy, so your square will also include a bit of baby slobber and mashed up biscuit! She does give very lovely cuddles and so she hopes you will forgive her if you get a dribbled on square.

💜

hello!
posting from sunny climes as on holiday.
I have been reading and loving all the posts.
I have just about finished the baby jacket that I am knitting- thats what I brought to do really......and I have been trying out the Bella Coco granny square and c2c ( which I have found lovely to do!) with wool bought over here. For some strange reason, they don't seem to do double knitting. There is a baby wool, which is a bit thicker than 4 ply, and then it jumps to a thinnish chunky , so I decide the thickish baby wool would be best. I am hoping K&P can use them for the refugee appeal. .
Am now wishing I had brought more wool for Candys Hugs with me....ah well, there is still love in every stitch. Can I be converted to crotchet from knitting? Erm ... probably not! but it's nice to have a change Grin

it is NEVER a bad thing to buy more yarn. Ever.

Pop I like the cut of your jib. Plus I need (want?!) a darning needle, I'm pulling peskies through with a small hook, and I think it would be quicker and easier with a needle.

Chipping thank you, I'm sure I'll enjoy it, and hopefully will come out with a flower that looks like a flower rather than a teapot or a puddle or something!

MrsDilligaf too cute, I want a squish!

Right, onwards, I'm going to attempt a new pattern this evening, so I'm off to YouTube to decide on one. Please excuse any bad language from Hants.

TheoriginalLEM · 02/02/2017 19:19

Was looking at some wool in C&H today and there was another lady there aaying she was crochet novice (like me). I wondered if she was a mnetter/wooly hugger.

If that was anyone here, i apologise on DP's behalf about the nipple comment Hmm Can't take him anywhere --although i reckon he was losing the will to live after i insisted on touching ALL the lovely yarns! Am looking to make a blanket for dd. I found some really nice dk yarn with different colours in each ball but i didn't buy any as there was no yellow and dd wants yellow.

I dreamt about crochet last night Shock

Yiayoula · 02/02/2017 19:32

MrsHathaway : Thanks for posting links to grid patterns and the knitpurl stitches site, just what I needed.
Tried to buy patterns for 6 inch knitted squares locally today without success and some Hmm looks : obviously know an amateur when they see one !

SpiralArchitect · 02/02/2017 20:21

I enabled myself today by buying MORE yarn with the magic code Blush

LEM there's some vair naice yarn in C&H, isn't there?

TheoriginalLEM · 02/02/2017 20:24

There is! Wink dangerous almost !

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/02/2017 20:46

Argh, this has fallen off my I a, on list, knitting has slowed up a bit but will crack on

rosesandcashmere · 02/02/2017 20:54

Thank you @PolterGoose :)

Sittinginthesun · 02/02/2017 20:59

Help! My squares are varying in size, and some are bigger than 6" despite using the sane number of stitches at the start. It's obviously depending on what pattern I'm doing - how many do you all cast on? Knitting, obviously...

bookbook · 02/02/2017 21:02

I've found with this wool, I use 30 stitches Sitting - i fear I am a much looser knitter than others :) !

Sittinginthesun · 02/02/2017 21:18

Thanks. I'm just about to start a 30 stitch square. The last couple were 33 stitches, but one was much bigger than the other...Hmm

NorksAreMessy · 02/02/2017 21:22

I have been doing 32, but I am quite tight Grin

PicardsCombOver · 02/02/2017 21:26

Arf @ Norks Grin

NorksAreMessy · 02/02/2017 21:38

I am mostly just ridiculously overexcited that I can finally join in on these threads instead of just admiring you all from afar.
I am only knitting the most basic possible squ-ectangles, but I am so happy to be doing it.

That Zombie sure has left a legacy, hasn't she?

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 02/02/2017 21:57

Well ladies, I spent all evening on this once the Small Malcolms were in bed and I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself!

I know it's just a boring square of double stitch and it's all one colour, but it's the very first thing I've ever crocheted!

And then DD1 who started knitting her square well after I started my crochet one, showed me hers - over twice the size of mine and wonderfully stripy! Oh well!

Thank you ever so much to those of you who have helped with advice, videos etc - really very, very much appreciated!

Norks yes she did. I hope she's chuffed.
Malc your rows are so orderly and pretty!!!

RedGrapeCornSnake · 02/02/2017 23:02

What pattern are you using Malc? I've not worked out how to crochet back and forwards yet, just round and round!
Did go a bit off piste tonight and have a crack at a flower, looks pretty cute even if I do say so myself!

MrsHathaway · 03/02/2017 00:01

Very neat for beginners though it has to be said crochet is more forgiving in that regard than knitting.

I'm 10" into a rather interesting 12". Doesn't look like the pattern Blush but I quite like it. Photo when finished.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 03/02/2017 00:36

Hi again, kinda lost this thread!

Finally finished sewing in all peskies for my 12" square, so started a 6" C2C (on photo)

Pop to answer your earlier question about auction I feel the same way as Chipping, I couldn't have worded it better.
It's a lovely idea though.❤

ThursdayNextIsMyHero · 03/02/2017 07:19

I've used up most of my leftover colours on earlier squares, and went to my local shop to get some more. Forgot my phone so didn't have a list of colours. I remembered boysenberry but also got another not on the list. I think Candy's Hugs may get some single colour squares, and Chernobyl the other colour. In the past, I've just bought blanket packs for Attic24's designs from Wool Warehouse, so actually going to choose individual colours was a bit different (pity I got it wrong)
