Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

I can't do anything creative Blush no matter how good the instructions are from the wonderful ladies on here, I can't make a square but I would like to donate some money for wool etc, it won't be much but I hope it helps. I know Zombie was very much loved.
If possible can someone pm me as I can't remember how to do it.
Thank you Flowers

AHobbyaweek · 01/02/2017 22:08

Thank you pop! That really helped Smile

VittysCardigan · 01/02/2017 22:17

Loving your Zombie Pop!

TheWoollybacksWife · 01/02/2017 22:30

Vitty if you can bear to undo it almost back to the start of the round and crochet it up again you will probably have created enough "give" in the yarn to finish the round.

VittysCardigan · 01/02/2017 22:44

Woolly It's a blanket 28" square Sad I'm not sure I can bear to frog the rowConfused Will see how I feel tomorrow

TheWoollybacksWife · 01/02/2017 22:56

Oh in that case you won't need to take it back so far. I thought it was smaller. Try taking back 2 sides. Still a lot but not quite as daunting.

VittysCardigan · 01/02/2017 23:02

Thanks for the tip Woolly, might give it a go

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 01/02/2017 23:14

Woolly do you crochet too?

I tried to teach myself this evening as I'm waiting for my 'proper' yarn to arrive. It took me flipping ages to do four rows of double stitch. I then put it down, feeling rather pleased with myself, and decided to watch some You Tube tutorials whilst I was in the mood. It appears I have inadvertently invented a new stitch...Blush.

Oh well, I shall try again tomorrow!

NorksAreMessy · 02/02/2017 00:28

tesco if you message Knottyandpistey (the OP) they will happily take a donation for wool / postage on PayPal

Before I remembered how to knit again (veryveryveryvery basic) that's what I used to do to join in.

PicardsCombOver · 02/02/2017 01:19

AHobby - I think your zigzag square is bloody marvellous, I don't have the balls to try it yet!

Morning!

Not The Zombie related, but I blame you lot for my new obsession with this pattern! This is what I'm doing in my "down time" atm...

Hi everyone

I have been busy knitting the squares so haven't been posting on this thread but have been following. Hopefully I have attached the pics of squares so far.

Picards. Sorry to hear about your pain. My finger joints ache a bit sometimes, but I know what I'm in for as I have 'my mother's hands'. She has had 'aching & sore' joints for years now & has two fingers that are sort if 'frozen' 😕

Spiral. You little enabler! 😁 I like to support my local wool shop, but that price is very tempting! (£1.59, theirs is £2.20).

POP. I love the pattern/texture of your 'downtime' piece. The Zombie is looking FAB! I wouldn't be risking taking it into London, it might get Hug-napped in this weather! (Plus I hate carrying anything! I'd take a 'downtime piece, in one colour 😂). LOL. I've just thought, I could spend the day in London POP Zombie spotting 😂 As you know, I don't (yet?) crochet, but I'm trying to knit my ends in, unfortunately they're a threeway colour change and it's a bit fiddly when you're all thumbs I'm sure crocheting over them is every bit as good as using a needle.

FrenchDucks. That sounds like fun. I hope you enjoy it.
I bought 13 balls of Stylecraft the other day when I went in for three - I'm waiting for Fushia to come in & I have no doubt a few more will fall into my basket. (Shushhh don't tell anyone, but I keep tipping them out onto the sofa just to admire the colours 😂).

Spindelina. 😁 If you can do that lacework I'm sure you'll soon have square squares!

AHobby. Give it time, it looks like a good first attempt at waves to me. Cross stitch is DEFINITELY easier!

Tap. I'm sure it'll be great. The most difficult thing is working out how many stitches you need to get 6" It looks tiny when you cast on and takes a good few rows before you can get any real idea. It's better to be a little small than a little too big. I think most people seem to need about 32 stitches. I'm a tight knitter and with this wool need 35.

Tesco. 'Every little helps' 😁 If you go to a post by the person you want to PM, look along the bit where their name is and at the right hand end it says Message Poster, just click on that. You can be a part of this just by joining in with the chat & encouraging us along, you might even get tempted to try again! No one would want you to send money you can't really afford to 💐

Vitty. How bloody annoying! How did you get on with undoing & redoing? If that doesn't work I'm sure someone at the receiving end will have that colour & be able to do that tiny bit for you. Sending chocolate helps ease the guilt 😁

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 02/02/2017 09:44

K&P. Morning Brew 🍪

catmadcaz. [Hmm]. That's where I'm going wrong, too much posting, not enough knitting Blush

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 02/02/2017 10:09

I've just decided to ATTEMPT toclearn to knit. Dumb question...do I need eyes? I crochet mostly by feel, and I can see (😆😅😂) an accident happening if I start holding knitting needles an inch awwy from my face...

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 02/02/2017 10:17

POP. Might be safest not to knit! 😉
Good knitters do it by feel, learners by sight. It shouldn't actually take you long to learn to do basic knitting by feel.

steppemum · 02/02/2017 10:28

Morning, I've just done 4 small squares for Chernobyl, and I am waiting on wool to start some for Candy.

Catz, can I ask - I see lots of those raised motifs on squares on here. Are they knitted into the pattern as you go, or are they added afterwards?

I am quite a good plain knitter. I tend to do stripes and textures, but have never tried a raised motif and would like to.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 02/02/2017 10:41

So I had a bit of an idea last night...please feel free to flame me if I'm speaking out of turn.

What if we auctioned one of the blankets we are all contributing to, to raise a bit of cash for a charity, in honor of Candy?

rosesandcashmere · 02/02/2017 10:56

Hello I have a stupid question Blush are the six in squares measured round the edges or through the middle diagonally? I'm having a complete blank day

Picards. You were going to buy that yarn anyway, admit it. I've just saved you some pennies! Grin

Chipping. Buy the yarn, you know you want to! My local yarn shop doesn't sell Stylecraft so I love it when there's a nice online offer...

I am having a short break from Candy's Hugs and am working on Chernobyl squares (and enabling yarnaholics Grin ).

catmadcaz · 02/02/2017 11:20

steppemum I knitted the leaves separately and sewed them on. The next ones I do I think i will knit them as I go using a grid pattern(intarsia) I think it is called.

PicardsCombOver · 02/02/2017 11:36

I saved a pound by buying online Grin
I finally finished the Chernobyl squares so I can start on Candys (in some beautiful bloody colours) my first attempt is er. .. interesting
