Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Fairy the first square I tried came out at 6" but I suspect it is more through luck than skill!

I haven't had a lot of success so far with the squares that go 'left to right and back again' (I'm sure there's a technical term) as my tension isn't very consistent and what starts at 6" seems to change as it gets bigger. Sticking to 'round and round' ones for the time being! Smile

Tamsworth17 · 29/01/2017 17:00

LucienandJean I tried two yarns with different colours and it came out quite pretty.

I´ve made about 8 squares and every single one has some sort of mistake in it, where I got distracted and went wrong. Its called adding a special touch, isnt it? Hmm

CraftyGirly90 · 29/01/2017 17:03

Chipping I haven't tried the two together yet but might do next, see what they're like together. I totally agree with you, the ££ donors are every bit as important as the knitters and hookers. We couldn't do nearly as much without them.

Salad I'm the same, I can do 'round and round' fine but if I try 'left to right and back again' it goes all wrong. Its why I tend to stick to 'round and round' xx

Spindelina · 29/01/2017 17:05

I'm doing back and forth (raster?) and I only realised about four rows in that I was actually increasing one stitch every time I turned round. Which wasn't such a bad thing - I was a bit under 6" and now I'm much closer. Bit of a curvy corner though - sorry!

Lucysdiamonds · 29/01/2017 18:30

Following ... will read through the thread now.

Marcipex · 29/01/2017 18:35

I usually only send squares that are the same on both sides.

MrsH I'll try darning over them, but I'm afraid I'll make it lumpy.
I can see similar heart granny squares sent in on the WH pages but I can't see them close up.

PicardsCombOver · 29/01/2017 19:53

I hope its ok if i share with you guys as in real life im a sad friendless soul Grin DH found a marvellous replacement Christmas gift and I used the new tools to make a bobble square Grin
Spindelina my squares are exactly the same, 2 inches on the bottom and 12 on the top lol

Flowers & gin to you all

MrsHathaway · 29/01/2017 20:06

Ooh I luffs a new set of hooks and useful bits and bobs.

I like bobbles too but my lining up is dreadful Lovely!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 29/01/2017 20:19

Polter. OK so it might nit be perfect, but that's ok, I'll take what I can get 😁

Marciplex. I hope you're feeling a bit better 💐 Re your tiny bit of trailing colour, for the love of all things Woolly, that's nothing! Lots of us are knitting stripes, colour trailing everywhere, I like to think of it as the blankets having both a lovely face & a bit of character!

Picards. Of course it is...all chat is good chat. Good replacement pressie!

FairyFellows. I'm waiting for some Fusia to come into the local wool shop, I think a few other colours might fall into my basket while I'm there...this is what happened when I went in for a couple of balls a fortnight ago. They're such fab colours!

Lucy. Welcome 💐, pull up a comfy seat and help yourself to 🥃🍫Brew

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 29/01/2017 20:21

Fliss I was in two minds whether to link it or not, so thanks. One less thing to over think 🥃

MrsHathaway · 29/01/2017 20:25

Thanks Fliss - will be all Candy tonight.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 29/01/2017 20:58

Picards - what a lovely bubble square.

If Zombie could only see how much love and productivity there is in her name she'd be so bloody chuffed!!!

I'm currently working on Chernobyl squares but I'm looking forward to returning to Candy's hugs shortly.

Mind you, there's also Billy's Blankets which hold a special place in my heart!!!!!

When I win the lottery I'm giving up work and spending my time in crochet heaven producing multiple squares for all the good causes!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 29/01/2017 21:02

Evening laydehs!

I discovered today that I must have been trying to work on The Zombie while on the morphine...what a mess! Three whole rounds frogged!

And DH has just confessed that he forgot to post the Turrocks squares...so he is in the doghouse, and they'll be on their way tomorrow.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/01/2017 21:13

Evening all, just knitted a 12" for chernobies and next two will be candy's, I have a day in a cold warehouse tomorrow so can knit to my hearts content.

In other news, Zombielamb is no longer capable of having mini zombielambs, after a visit from the shepherd and a rubber ring, but he happily spent the wet day in the pig sty

Marcipex · 29/01/2017 21:26

Chipping thank you, I am lots better, but I now have a Chernobyl square known as the Codeine square.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/01/2017 21:44

a sunshine flower for Zombie. It's not as wonky as it looks in the pic. xx

Zombie and Woolly Hugs. Our second thread! Come and find out about Candy's Hugs, all very welcome.
Marcipex · 29/01/2017 21:47

That's lovely LEM

CraftyGirly90 · 29/01/2017 21:48

LEM how do you do that sunshine flower pattern? I can just about do basic crochet stitch and a basic granny square. Can't seem to get the hang of other patterns xx

FiveGoMadInDorset · 29/01/2017 21:57

Oh dear Pop but that did bring a smile to my face

MrsHathaway · 29/01/2017 22:05

I found this in my six-inch book. Definitely appropriate - I will conquer c2c!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 29/01/2017 22:10

😂😂😂 POP. Thank you, I needed that 😬 You poor thing though, what a shame 💐

No worries about Tunnock's squares, final posting isn't until the 18th of Feb.

FiveGMID. Poor ZombieLamb 😔 Feel free not to answer, but why are you spending tomorrow in a cold warehouse, but can knit all day? Are you avoiding the inlaws (or have you shipped them back off home - I can't keep up!).

Marcipex. I'm glad you're feeling a bit better. 😬 @ codeine square!

LEM fab square!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 29/01/2017 22:14

MrsH. Brilliant!

(For those whose eyes are a little challenged - it's a square called Candy)

TheoriginalLEM · 29/01/2017 22:17

I found it on ravelry. i don't have the link on my phone but i searched granny square free. It only has one special stitch and it is really well explained , involving wrapping the yarn round more times rather than putting the hook somewhere different.

i am most def a beginer! and i found it ok.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 29/01/2017 22:31

I forgot to attach the photo earlier. This is what I bought when I popped into the local wool shop to pick up a 'ball or 3' for Candy's Hugs. I need to go in again soon to collect the Fushia they're waiting delivery of. I fear a few more balls might fall into my basket 😫😁

I love the Vintage Set for the Kinship Hugs too.

Eek.
