Welcome to our second thread, may it be as vibrantly riotous as the first!

Anyone reading this thinking Shall I? Can I? Yes you can! :) We would love to have you on board, from someone who is keen to learn crochet or knitting to the more experienced, ALL are welcome here. And a lack of funds is no barrier, we have wonderful donors who want to take part and need a crafter, so we can send you yarn, needles and hooks if necessary. It is all about being inclusive and team work.

So let's crack on!

This then a C&P of the crafting info from thread one.

Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. wine wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, let's do it! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! smile

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

K&P. We like to keep you on your toes 🐟🐠

That amigurami is cool...it's tempting me over to the dark side, but I think I'd better start with granny squares 😬

Exciting that the first Candy Hug is going to a lovely MNer 💕

bookbook no need to be bashful, you can pm/email me your attempt & I'll torture you with mine 😂

I've finally finished 12" square number three, delayed for a while because I had no heating for two days and my hands were too cold to hook!!

Claret, spice and saffron: an autumnal riot.

Spiral that is lovely, especially with those colours

Spindelina · 20/01/2017 16:48

Love it, Spiral.

Hello woolly wonders.
I am a real novice and I am a knitter, not crocheter and I would like some advice please.
I have knitted about seven six inch squares and am feeling a bit proud. (I know, I know, it is not the most anyone has ever knitted, but this is a big deal for me)
Now all the crochet ones are fab and exciting and swirly, but all mine are just stripey so far, in lots of colours and different stripes, but, basically, stripes is my design limit so far.

SOOOOO, what is my next challenge? What pattern will work and that I will be able to cope with and will look good and will work in a blanket and not annoy the maker-upper-ers

Thank you Star

scalliondays · 20/01/2017 19:23

Norks - I could have written that question - except for the detail that I haven't actually knitted anything yet... I'll be eagerly looking out for the answers!

MrsHathaway · 20/01/2017 20:45

Phone ate long post Angry

Next stop textures! Just in k and p, no complicated cables or decreases and increases. "Bar code" stripes are fun - randomly k or p in the first full row, then follow your own pattern all the way up.

Double moss is good too: cast on an even number, then k2 p2 etc all the way across. Come back matching. Then p2 k2 etc all the way across. Come back matching. And repeat. You get little 2x2 squares like a chessboard.

TheoriginalLEM · 20/01/2017 21:35

I love that square salad! I am doing a 12" square, but simple granny square as I'm tired after work and I can just zone out and hook. I am tempted to send for more colours but I have enough wool here so will try and combine. I wish I had your colour sense salad! I happened upon my knitting needles yesterday and tempted to get those out but crochet is so much quicker

Marcipex · 20/01/2017 22:30

Oh Norks, I often wonder if I'm annoying the maker-upper-ers too.

My butterfly square was a fraction under, but another row would have taken it over [arghwhattodo]

bookbook · 20/01/2017 22:43

Evening!
My output today .
I think hand made with love means they are all a little individual in size.
I have just done 2 in the same pattern, first one was a tweak narrow, so I added a stitch at either end of the row of the second one , so its a little wider :)
Norks - thats great, its a big achievement getting your head around a new skill. scallion too !
I use textures and lace patterns a lot.
I use this website lots for patterns <a class="break-all" href="//-www.knittingonthenet.com/stitches.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">LIBRARY OF STITCHES try the easy ones first for the number of stitches and rows you need to make it 6" , and then experiment

NorksAreMessy · 20/01/2017 23:43

Thanks for the answers so far. I will have a go at knit and purl combos.
Are we allowed to do this sort of malarkey ...or does it make the back too messy?

(Needless to say this is a Google image...it is NOT my work!)

Fair isle is lovely Norks, but it does get quite interesting on the back, and all those pesky ends! I do a bit when I need a particular pattern, but I find it so time consuming making the back tidy, that I don't knit it up often.
Firefly - that is an impressive stack ! :)

Coffeeandcrochet · 21/01/2017 09:35

This is my first 12" square - I call it my sunshine square Smile colours are sherbet, shrimp, saffron and meadow.

Coffeeandcrochet · 21/01/2017 09:50

...and my second, which I'm calling rose in winter. It's based on frostbloom by Shan Sevcik, using sherbet, claret, pomegranate, magenta, lavender.

The square in my previous post is based on spring fling by April Moreland.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 21/01/2017 09:57

Coffee - that is a lovely square - but so many peskies to sew in!!!

I'm about to package up my squares and send them off - I will be back on this thread to check out everyone's contributions and to get new ideas but, for the time being, I'm working on Chernoble Squares. The plan is 70 blankets with the last posting date in April - that's some challenge but I'm happy to be part of it!!!

I will be back crocheting for Zombie but, until then, I'm attaching a couple of pics of my contributions.

Each and every stitch is full of love, (and a wee bit of frustration as I had to frog some squares and re-do them) BUT I really hope they give some love and comfort to whoever receives them.

K+P - I have PM'd you.

One more for now - based on the pretty puffy square pattern posted upthread (or maybe on the first thread?) by AliceInUnderpants Smile colours are saffron, meadow, sherbet, lavender, magenta.

Coffeeandcrochet · 21/01/2017 10:02

Fairy - yes, soooo many ends! I have only sewed in half of them so far...

I was originally aiming for a full blanket's worth of squares for Candy's Hugs, but having read how many squares they need for the Chernobyl project a few days ago, I'm going to do the same as you and switch to that project for a few weeks, once I've finished the Candy square I'm currently working on.

SpiralArchitect · 21/01/2017 11:19

Coffee - those squares are gorgeous!

I'm another one who's going to do one more 12" for this project, post them off next week for the current deadline and then switch to Chernobyl squares.

Coffeeandcrochet · 21/01/2017 11:55

Thanks Spiral Smile I'm using this as an excuse to try out a load of new patterns, there's an absolute treasure trove here. They all come out at about 8" for me, so I've been adding extra rounds to get to 12", with varying degrees of success!

Fairy - I couldn't see your pictures before on my phone but now I'm on my laptop I can see them - lovely! I especially love the waffle square in your first picture Smile

StillSmallVoiceOfQualms · 21/01/2017 12:23

I can't believe I've managed to miss not one but two threads of these gorgeous squares!

I've checked my stash and have got some of the colours so I'm getting started this weekend, but I am having cravings over the claret and spice colours... I can always make some Chernobyl squares as well, so I practically have to buy more - don't I?

Spindelina · 21/01/2017 12:38

Loving the colour combos, Coffee.

Does anyone want my ends? I've got 84 of them, all tomato. The longest ones are about 36 inches, which is too short for me to use, but might be useful to someone else? I could stick them in an envelope and post them no bother. PM me if you want them.
