Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

One load of squares will be taken to the Post Office today and dispatched to Woolly Hugs HQ, Chernobyl Branch!

The little one was originally for Candy's Hugs but I think Chernobyl needs it more at this point!

Next up are some squares for ZombieLad's blanket, but then I'll be back.

Norman and Woolly, you have inspired me to attempt an Attic 24 blanket next! Just hope I can get it done in time for the deadline.

I have had a flash of pure genius and have cleared out the bottom of the toy cupboard myself! Now there is plenty of room for my yarn (and perhaps a bit extra?!) however in doing so, I had to get ALL of my bags of yarn out. I actually had no idea I had so much! Blush

I'm going to do yarn pegs for it all so that I can organise it better, I think.

Malcolm - what a lovely collection. :) I sorted all my wool out a few weeks ago, and it is now in a fairly large chest of drawers ! It is rather addictive buying wool ...I was originally eyeing up nice storage boxes to put on top of cupboards, but I had too much.Blush
Amethyst I am having to sit on my hands as it is, stop it! Grin
well, I got up early due to rubbish cough waking me, so I finished off last nights square while having breakfast. Supposed to be going out and also get some gardening done , but think I may plead poorliness (I'm not really bad , but DH is showing sympathy) and sit down to do a bit more...

MadisonAvenue · 16/03/2017 11:37

Good morning all, I've just started working on a 12" granny stripe in Meadow and Saffron.

book it sounds like you really should stay inside in the warm and crochet relax. Hope the cough soon clears.

Beautiful squares there Malc

TheWoollybacksWife · 16/03/2017 11:41

I was out for a couple of hours this morning and came back to the red card of doom Sad which is either my wool order or my new summer sandals. It says it can't be collected until tomorrow. I have enough yarn to do three more stripes tonight (possibly four). I'll end up talking through the footy or the rugby tonight Grin or I'll raid my stash and do a plain granny.

My stash is in a 2x2 Kallax in the under the stairs cupboard plus an ottoman/footstool thingy in the lounge. I've also got a plastic box in the kitchen where I am stashing teeny bits of yarn with the intention of making another knitted nativity set later in the year.

Lovely postie has just been, second day in a row, didn't shoot me daggers 😂

Phffft Angry

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/03/2017 13:02

WBW. Well, I'm still very, very impressed with the speed & beauty with which you're turning them out 😊 💐. I was very lucky with my delivery, I'd literally just walked in the door & am back out again now. Are you not incorporating all the colours that you photographed?

Malcolm. The little 6"er looks a bit lost amongst the Big Boys 😬 Luckily he'll have lots of new friends at C2017HQ 😊 Lots of lovely squares!

Brave of you to dive into an Attic24. - if you don't manage to get it done in time it would make an amazing (big) Littke Hug or Kinship blanket if you can bear to part with it

Good idea to get to the Toy Cupboard before DH. Now you just need to label the bags/boxes/crates of yarn something he won't bother to open 😂 It's amazing how it accumulates...

Amethyst. Thanks for the heads up. I'm not remotely tempted though as I've just had 3 lots delivered and I'm about to pop in to the local(ish) shop to get the cloud blue and a couple for another project (aspen & fiesta) but it's a long time until Sunday... 😂

bookbook. You do sound dreadful, you really should stay warm & dry. 😉 A nice bacon buttie & a cup of tea might would help too and perhaphs 🍫🥃 later on...

Madison. That sounds nice.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/03/2017 13:05

WBW. 🍫💐. Sorry, I hadn't read the thread before I posted my photo Blush. I'd get the pidgeon to bring you some this afternoon, but he's a bit hopeless...sorry.

MadisonAvenue · 16/03/2017 13:26

I'm joining WBW in the Pfffft corner.

I'm waiting for some Chernobyl yarn and the post van just came onto our close, it was at a neighbour's house for ages so I stood hovering hopefully near to the front door...and then saw it drive past.

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/03/2017 15:34

🙁Madison

Should I not mention my trip to the local wool shop?

I was very restrained mainly because I have almost all permitted shades & don't like the others

NormansNipple · 16/03/2017 17:11

Malcolm I was just about to launch into loads of advice about picking Attic24 kits, then I looked at your squares and realised you don't need it! They are so beautiful. If you do start one let us know which one. I've bought the log cabin kit for a blanket for myself, I'm going to take it to yoga classes, and the moorland kit to make for my Granny.

TheoriginalLEM · 16/03/2017 17:57

My plans for peskies and posting went astray today as Dp had a rare day off to coincide with mine so he suggested a "short" bike ride . 37 miles and a pub lunch later (undoing any good with all the cycling )i and i can't feel my backside Hmm

The good news however is that i accidentally started 2 more squares so now have 15 squares im going to try for a full blankets worth.

TheoriginalLEM · 16/03/2017 17:58

Am also hankering after starting an attic 24 square

TheWoollybacksWife · 16/03/2017 18:47

37 miles Shock

Chipping I tried incorporating the blues and greens from my stash but they didn't seem to work. I think if I'd persevered and done a few more colour changes it might have looked less random, but I didn't want to take the chance that I might have to frog 4 or 5 colour changes and lose a whole evening's work. I'm going to use the blue for a blanket for my friend's DD who is off to uni this Autumn along with another 6 balls that 'accidentally' fell into my Wool Warehouse order so I'll be looking for inspiration for a pattern for that soon.

MadisonAvenue · 16/03/2017 18:49

Chipping I love those blues together

TheoriginalLEM · 16/03/2017 19:04

Chipping am just doing a c2c with those colours. one of my favourite combos

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/03/2017 19:11

LEM. Enjoy it while it lasts. You'll feel it tomorrow 😵

WBW. I expect it would have looked great, but I understand not wanting to take the risk!

Madison. Midnight, Cloud & Turquoise. I didn't actually buy them to go together, but they do look quite nice. I've got lots of blues now, so I feel some stripes coming on! 😁

I need to buy a lamp though. If anyone can recommend a good bulb that would be fab.

TheoriginalLEM · 16/03/2017 19:29

for once im grateful not to have a sitting down job Blush

TheoriginalLEM · 16/03/2017 19:31

my phone must be rubbish at colours as my blues are petrol turquoise and sherbertShock

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 16/03/2017 19:54

I haven't ridden my bike in ages, many reasons, but that's certainly one thing putting me off starting again!

The colours on screens are so deceptive, people say their squares are xyz colour & they look nothing like the wool I actually have here Hmm. I had a word with the iPad, but it just sort of shrugged. I think online ordering is so hit & miss unless you've had the wool before...I do miss good wool shops I 'think' the wool I ordered for other (still WH) projects is ok, I'll have a look tomorrow in better light.

Spindelina · 16/03/2017 20:24

I've just been looking at the square sorting photos on Facebook. I can see a couple of my squares in the piles.

Six weeks ago, I'd knitted one thing in my life (DDs Christmas stocking), and never used a crochet hook for crochet.

And then Candy's Hugs comes along and I ventured my lacy offerings and then we decided they would be better backed with knit and so I dug out my needles. And then I joined in these threads and I bought a crochet hook and now there's the Marigold square I made looking all in keeping with all the other squares.

Bit warm and fuzzy here Grin

TheWoollybacksWife · 16/03/2017 20:37

Ooh photos you say Spin. I've just picked DD2 up from her Roman adventure and I'll get her to show me. I am a complete Luddite I know. Grin

DropZoneOne · 16/03/2017 21:00

Amethyst perfect, I can order the Lipstick! Although just one ball being sent would be a bit lonely wouldn't it? I'd need to add a few one more to keep it company? What would go?
