Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

Hooray for the new website!

Have finished off the butterfly square in Aster. Love that colour! Am really pleased with how I managed to repeat the pattern to get the square to 12".

Spindelina · 28/02/2017 19:35

Can I join the Marigold club?!

Malcolm, your productivity is putting me to shame. You've done a whole other Marigold and that butterfly square (which, incidentally, is on my rather long to do list) while I've been doing my border!

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
PurpleFrog · 28/02/2017 21:07

Ooooh - I like that colour scheme Spindelina!

bookbook · 28/02/2017 21:19

wow - gorgeous squares on here!
I am plodding on with 4 x 6" c2c squares, to give my neck a little break from knitting. Somewhat boring, and plain , so am doing each in a different colour.
Malcolm - I love the aster blue too!

Spindelina · 28/02/2017 21:22

Thanks, purple. I'm much more confident piddling around with geometry than I am with colour - glad to hear you think it works. Magenta, boysenberry, pomegranate and fuchsia, iirc.

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 28/02/2017 22:17

Spindelina, that is gorgeous! Fwiw, I think borders are the WORST! They always take me as long, if not longer, than the actual square!

The butterfly square is actually very easy and repetitive, which is why I managed to get it done so quickly! I just repeated the pattern adding more ch6 spaces to make it large enough, then a final row of trebles/doubles to finish as per the pattern.

I'm going to try one of the squares from the 2014 Block CAL at lookatwhatImade.com next once my next order of new colours arrives tomorrow and I suspect that will take me longer.

Book, I did actually think of you when I chose the Aster! Sadly my ball is now very much depleted and floppy so, of course, I just HAD to order another one! Blush

TheWoollybacksWife · 01/03/2017 00:13

I've done my 75 colour changes and the blanket (before the border) measures 121x153cm which is roughly 48"x60" so tomorrow I'm going to do the border and tackle the peskies

Then I'm going to join the marigold club Grin

bookbook · 01/03/2017 22:08

Evening
just finished my 4 x c2c 6" squares. Being a novice, I was quite pleased, until I realised one slightly smaller than the other 3 -( peskies threaded in and everything) - I may see if I can ease it when I sew them together .

Incoming...!!!

Fresh off the hook: Rainbow Marigold Mark II

Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017
bookbook · 02/03/2017 16:44

wow Spiral - that is fab- u - lous

Spindelina · 02/03/2017 16:48

Ooo Spiral I like that. I'm planning a rainbow knit after I've finished the lipstick cables I'm doing at the moment.

Lipstick, spice, saffron, Kelly green, turquoise, violet & lavender? I was thinking turquoise, petrol, violet. But now I'm not sure.

MadisonAvenue · 02/03/2017 16:53

Spiral that is absolutely beautiful!

SpiralArchitect · 02/03/2017 16:55

Mark I is upthread somewhere - that one started with red in the centre...

It's lipstick, spice, saffron, kelly green, turquoise, lobelia and violet.

Lobelia is probably the closest to indigo you can get in SSDK - I secretly wish it was on the Candy's Hugs palette Grin

Turquoise/violet/lavender could work though...

Spindelina · 02/03/2017 17:30

Hmm I don't have lobelia - just the Candy's Hugs colours minus meadow (was out of stock). Might go and play with wool again.

The other one I'm not 100% sure about is Kelly vs grass. I think Kelly works in yours as a contrast, but I'll have bigger blocks so the lighter colour might blend more between saffron and turquoise.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 02/03/2017 18:16

I love everyone's squares, and very much in awe of the crocheters.
Spindelina here are my 2 rainbow squares for Chernobyl.
The garter stitch one is lipstick, spice, saffron, Kelly, empire, violet and lavender.
The stocking stich one is the same except for the blue - I used turquoise.

Spindelina · 02/03/2017 18:35

Thanks IAm. Those are pretty similar to what I plan - really useful to see.

IAmNotAUserNumber · 02/03/2017 18:47

The garter stitch looks very dark in that photo, but looks a lot brighter in RL.

Spindelina · 02/03/2017 18:50

Yeah, you always have to calibrate these photos against the yarn in the flesh!

NormansNipple · 02/03/2017 20:39

Spiral that's lovely! I'm feeling very inspired by all the rainbow colours on here Grin

Woollyback how is the border going? I've only done 45 colour changes so only halfway through if I go to the full 90!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 02/03/2017 20:51

🎉💐🥂🍺💕 Yay to our Stylecraft win 😊

Beautiful & vibrant squares all!

Norman. QC sounds really cute with his little stash 😊

I'm having fun hooking some small squares together to make a 12". But FMD, I'm not cut out to be Construction Crew! I'm fast coming to the conclusion that the older I get, the less patience I have for repetitive tasks. Definitely 🥂💐💕 for the crew x

bookbook · 02/03/2017 22:04

Evening!
I will be starting a 12" but not til tomorrow now . I just need to decide what design , decisions, decisions :)

TheoriginalLEM · 02/03/2017 23:43
