Welcome to our Chernobyl project for 2017!! So glad to have you on board!

For the last three years we have been making warm, comforting Little Hugs for Belarusian teenagers and children visiting the UK for recuperative holidays during the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project and Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline. Photos from the Leeds group can be seen here.. and our finished blankets from last year here…

Each year these marvellous charities bring children who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor over to the UK. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are very high, the most common cancers being thyroid and leukemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home. Often these children are in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little.

Last year 36 children, teens and their interpreters went home with a beautiful Woolly Hug. This year we are keen to help even more groups, so Liverpool, Gloucester/Leeds (same Leeds group but this year spending 2 weeks at each location) Portsmouth and Helpston,Northampton.

That is about 70+ blankets!! Shock Wine

With your help we know we can do this

Please do join us, here’s how..

Crafting Information

  • We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
  • PLEASE AVOID USING black, bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta, jaffa and any pale pastels, white or cream for practical reasons. This will help squares fit together more easily.
  • Make squares in a neutral colour theme, or more specifically for a boy or girl. As much as we don’t like to think of colour as being gender specific, these children may.
  • We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.
  • Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. Single colour, mixed colour, simple, complex. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.
  • If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.
  • Posting of squares please to the South Coast address, PM if you need it. Star

If you think you’d like to make a whole blanket that is WONDERFUL, but please contact us first. We will be asking for gender neutral blankets which are 48 inches by 60m, but would just like to chat to you first, thank you!

Supporting with funds
If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful. Please PM us for the donation info. Thank you xx

Can anyone help with extras?
There are a few extras which we will be collecting too alongside squares, items which really help, if you would like to add in any of these we would love to receive them for the children, thank you, bless you.

Underwear aged 10 plus. New only

  • Adult size socks (one size fits all) new
  • Toothbrushes, single packed please
  • Hairbrushes
  • Toiletries, toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo etc, but not bars of soap please.
  • Sanitary Towels
  • Plasters
  • Vitamins, please check suitable for 10 years+
  • Any little luxuries that teens might love, eg hair clips, make up bits, stickers etc.

If you would like to add 50p in when you post squares for ice creams that would be so kind, we will split any money we receive between the groups.

Last posting of squares (plus whole blankets) and any extras is Saturday 8th April

No later please as we have to get on and sort at the end of that following week. Thank you. The rush will be on as the first group, Portsmouth arrive in May.

What a big ask! Good grief!

But the fabulous Woolly Hug crew never fail to amaze, last year was an astonishing team effort, as the photo shows, we know that together we can do this.

On behalf of these children and their families, a huge THANK YOU.
Actually, thank you doesn't really come close.

Us xxx

I am hoping to get the equivalent of half a blanket of squares off to you next week or the week after...

Is it definitely to the South Coast address?

Fab squares, LEM - now get onto that Marigold!!!

KnottyAndPistey · 03/03/2017 11:45

Yes please to the South Coast Spiral, but if you are sending with treasure for other projects too send them to Teddington to save postage. They will all end up in the same place, thank you xxxx

Norm I have just finished the border. The final round was slow going but I'm glad I persevered as it looks lovely (if I do say so myself Grin). The 1st round of the border was UK trebles in copper and I'm glad I didn't do the full 90 colour changes as I finished the border row with about 3" of yarn to spare. I wouldn't have said I was a loose hooker either.

Now just 158 peskies to deal with Shock

K&P could you PM me the south coast address, please. I've only got the Teddington one.

Evening!
I have ploughed through another new pattern from Bella Coco today - 'Leaping Stripes" I won't use the 'w' word, (!) but ... it's got a slight bulge near the bottom where I hadn't quite got the ends of the rows quite right. I was so sure it would ease to 12" that I didn't do it wide enough - it actually stayed at 11" Shock, so I put a border of trebles around it :)
And here is the 4 x6" c2c I did, joined up. Again just very slightly -not square Grin . I will get the hang of crotchet eventually!

LEM - forgot to add - that second square is stunning!

MalcolmTuckersOmniShambles · 03/03/2017 22:20

Wow! Some gorgeous squares here. Really beautiful.

Have had a short break from squares to start on a blanket for DD3, but am feeling too guilty so I'll be back to more squares over the weekend!

Going to do a really pretty one I've had my eye on and then a really striking one in stronger colours.

TheWoollybacksWife · 04/03/2017 09:35

Finished! If I can motivate myself to get out of my dressing gown and into the shower I will go to the post office this morning.

I'm attaching photos - one of the blanket before the border, one of the finished blanket and one of the pile of peskies. Grin

We are becoming crotcheters Madison -Grin - pleased with the pattern - I can watch tv or talk doing that one!
I am going to attempt a 12" linen pattern today.( I should have been working on my allotment, but have had so much rain, its too wet underfoot. )

That works really well LEM
Lovely blanket Woolly
I attempted to learn crochet today. Watched a BC you tube video, which made absolute sense, but I found it all but impossible to get my loops over. I think if I keep having a go it may come to me eventually just like knitting did. Taught by my mother in 1970's; knitted a scarf in 2007 Blush - so only another 30 years or so Grin

bookbook · 04/03/2017 20:47

Evening!
LEM - impeccable choice :)
well, I started a linen stitch square, and ended up pulling it out and starting another c2c instead , with stripes in my fav combination of pomegarnate , aster and sage. .It was soooo boring ....:)
I have been out and bought some more wool though - a saffron to cheer things up. I bought wool for little hugs too, for once the Chernobyl ones are done.....its addictive, buying wool!
IAm - I am very new to crotchet, and have been doing the Bella CoCo tutorials. They are very good, but as a knitter, I am crotcheting that way too...wool over the hook via right forefinger Blush . It seems to work!

ChippingInLovesWoollyHugs · 05/03/2017 00:34

IAmNot. Try THIS GRANNY. It's really easy to follow. As a knitter I naturally hold the wool in my right hand and have to keep swapping it over.

bookbook. I have done 4 CTC in similar colours! I'll probably hook them together depending on their size & I just want to check the colours in daylight. I might need to leave ne out and do another in it's place as I'm not sure the colour goes as didn't set out to hook them together. I'm going to have a go at the 'Leaping Stripes'. I'm a tight knitter & crocheter- how many do you think I should start with?

Buying wool is incredibly addictive! Which wool did you choose for Little Hugs?

TheoriginalLEM · 05/03/2017 07:14

i hold my wool only in my right hand too, lapsed knitter. I just can't get my left hand involved other tgan to hold the square - seems to work, although it makes me somewhat of a loose hooker!

bookbook · 05/03/2017 08:46

Morning!
Chipping - the pattern is for making multiples of 4 +2 , so I think I chained 44 + 2 , but as I am new to this, in honesty, it was chaining and counting 1,2,3,4 and 1,2,3,4 and then measuring Blush - I am a looseish knitter and crotcheter, and that was a tweak narrow - about 11" , which is why I had to do a border.( I thought it would get bigger, like knitting does after the first cast on , but it didn't )
I was going through my wool stash and found some Wendy 100% bamboo in a lovely soft baby blue. Had it for ages , so I pm'd K&P to see if it would be useful for a Little Hug as I only have the 4 balls ( must have bought it in a closing down sale I think) . So while out, DD and I had gone to buy SSDK, but there was some nice looking Baby Marble by James C Brett, so I bought the 2 colour ways . :)
