Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

I would like to knit a square or two. I have some suitable wool already. just need to find my damn darning needle again to sew in ends on a scarf (that was meant to be a Christmas present!!) and finish knitting scarf for dd's bday (jan 14th!) then I will get started.
I am also trying to learn to crochet...would love to crochet a sqaure..but I DON'T get it. AT ALL!! so may stick to knitting Wink

bookbook · 05/01/2017 15:13

someones there before me - wool varies a bit too , so I always do a few rows and check with a new one :)

MrsMozart · 05/01/2017 15:14

I have a bobbered right arm so can't knit or crochet.

Not sure how PMs work on here, but if someone who'd like some wool wants to send me a pm then I'm sure we can work something out.

My step-MiL knits, so I'll send her some wool and ask her to make some as well :)

TalkingSheds · 05/01/2017 15:23

Just used an Excel lookup hack to check this list against my stash Grin and I do indeed have six colours.

Can you tell I'm "working"?

MrsMozart · 05/01/2017 15:37

Knotty I've, hopefully, sent you a PM - if you don't get it then I shall next try smoke signals or carrier pigeon!

Spindelina · 05/01/2017 15:44

Just wondering, do squares need to be knitted or crocheted? I make bobbin lace, and could do squares of that size with those yarns.

If they're going to be too tricky to incorporate, I'll knit. But I'm a much more proficient lacemaker than knitter!

moonbug4 · 05/01/2017 15:49

What a great idea! Count me in, I've got some of those colours in my Stylecraft stash and a few plain squares already knitted.

EssentialHummus · 05/01/2017 15:52

Knotty I'd like to help with wool - could you please PM me with what to buy/where to send?

daciousme · 05/01/2017 16:02

I'd like to crochet/knit some squares - a lovely idea - happy to help.

SpiralArchitect · 05/01/2017 16:07

I'm in - such a brilliant project. I have plenty of colours from that palette so can just crack on.

Huge love to the Star that is Zombie x

BigApple11 · 05/01/2017 16:15

Hey Woolies! More than happy to get involved. Will check my stylecraft stash. Did someone upthread mention AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET???? Very impressed and in awe!! I too follow Zombie's thread with a lump in my throat. Lost my very dear Aunty 2 years ago who went wrapped in her beloved crochet blanket I made her. So this is very close to my heart. Love to all on this thread Flowers

Iwantacampervan · 05/01/2017 16:16

That was dangerous - looking at sites which offered free shipping with £25 orders! I didn't get carried away and just ordered a couple of balls. I need a fairly simple project for the dark evenings.

HerRoyalFattyness · 05/01/2017 16:20

I'm unable to do anything just yet, but I will definitely be helping out in the future (once I've finished the things I've already got on the go Blush, I'm terrible for starting and not finishing). Star

Chocolateorangegoblin · 05/01/2017 16:22

To all the kind wishers, thank you!
Had a thought. I found a knitting machine in the loft. I know the square root of duck all about them, Mrs pangolin the same. Would it be any good to anyone? There's also a ball (?) Of wool bigger than my head! If it's any use to this project, or any of the participants, you're welcome to it. I'm in York and could deliver up to 40 miles radius.

KnottyAndPistey · 05/01/2017 17:16

We already have wonderful donors to thank. Honestly your donations mean so much to us, we always want to be inclusive, for everyone to join in if they would like to, and some folk just wouldn't be able to afford to. Your kind donations make it possible. Thank you Thanks
