Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Zing lovely, que?

"If you know how to do a granny square that's a very good start.
As the square grows you can check the size and decide how many more rounds you need.
It all depends on tension.

I typically do 9 rounds in a 6" square (and 18 in a 12" square) - although sometimes it's 8 rounds of tr plus one round of dc."

Am just going to knit & see, aren't I? Am now v pleased FidGirl is helping, we can "Heh?" at each other.

TheoriginalLEM · 05/01/2017 19:17

oh I'm definitely a loose hooker Grin Blush

I coudlnt get the link on the first page for wool supplies to work.

bookbook · 05/01/2017 19:19

Fiderer - you now know that everyone knits to their own tension :) - its just easy to measure as you go,:)
Its going to get a lot of people knitting and crotcheting , and for a really wonderful cause. That in itself is a wonderful thing Zombie has done

My crochet group reconvenes this week, and as if by magic, this thread appears! I've still got some yarn from another project, which I'm pretty sure matches up with one of the colours mentioned. This could well be what I was looking for in terms of a project with real meaning & purpose. I've been following Zombies threads for a while now, and I must confess, when this thread came up, I did have to pop away from my desk to compose myself.

Our group isn't well known for being the most well behaved, there's normally "fnars" and "snorks" flying round all over the place (something to do with "stick it in that hole & give it a good waggle to get it loose") - I suspect that Zombie would approve Grin

Fiderer · 05/01/2017 19:27

book I know, I just want it to be perfect. And I know it won't be, and I know it doesn't matter. I know Z will love it anyway.

I just want it to be as perfect as possible, daft as that may be. And it means a lot to my daughter, who adores Z. We'll prob fall over laughing at our efforts but that's par for the course.

OohhItsNotHoxton · 05/01/2017 19:31

I luff Zombie. I will totally get involved. What a fab plan Smile

bookbook · 05/01/2017 19:31

It will be perfect Fiderer as it will be made with love .
And I suspect every single square will also be equally perfect, for the same reason.

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2017 19:48

Oh dear KnottyAndPistey I have in the past subjected you to my poms poms Grin. I shall be sending you, at some point, some badly knitted squares. I am veeerrrrry sloooooow though. I may have the posting address somewhere but if I can't find it I'll get in touch via pm or fb Smile.

bookbook · 05/01/2017 20:03

calling Fiderer - I have been telling you porkies . I have just finished a square for WH , and realised that my suggestion of a square being 32 stitches and 36 rows is total fabrication Blush. It is 32 stitches , but 44 rows - sorry.....

Sorry if it's been asked before - where do we send the offending articles finished squares? I'm a very novice crocheter but can knock out a couple of squares that could be hidden in the middle Grin

TalkingSheds · 05/01/2017 20:12

I've sent you another pm....I've sourced my own wool now so please don't send me any Flowers

Sittingunderafrostysky · 05/01/2017 20:13

Right, I'm taking the plunge and joining you! I can knit, but I'm going to set myself a challenge and learn how to crochet. Deep breath needed, as I'm not very artistic....

HemanOrSheRa · 05/01/2017 20:15

TheoriginalLEM · 05/01/2017 20:19

I can't crochet. God knows I've tried. I've even sat with a very patient expert elderly lady crocheter and she tried her best but I just can't see it Confused. It'll be wonky-woo plain squares from me!
