Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 08/01/2017 16:19

Yay! (yup- I know I,sound about five!) I copied the first bit of the project description off the website- hope you don't mind. Feel free to have a look- I'm the gobby one who is all over Wooly Hugs facebook page!

Yddraigoldragon · 08/01/2017 16:36

Pop, if one of my fish faces did that I would be very cross. They have been taught not to touch the wool :) at least not if I am watching.

Wonky wonky wonky...

Dragon Grin

For everyone worrying about won full of character squares...here's just a bit of reassurance that they'll be ok.

This is a blanket I'm working on. The spiral square was wonky as hell- but when I joined other squares to it, it pulled itself into shape! AND it was a good half-inch smaller than it should have been, but it stretched.

I'm elbow deep in a blanket for a church project because apparently the word No isn't in my vocabulary where the "six inch" squares range from five to eight inches, and no edge is straight Hmm

It's still turning out to be a beautiful object with bags of character and crucially it's going to be warm and hard wearing.

I learned to crochet in April last year when I lost my temper with the s l o w n e s s of my knitting compared with the hookers. Definitely faster - although complicated dense crochet (eg Tunisian or crocodile) is only just faster than simple garter/stocking stitch knit. Crochet is also much more versatile for non-rectangular shapes such as snowflakes, hearts, butterflies etc for embellishments and decorations.

Are there any patterns (knitting) that I could look up for squares? I can do cable knit so quite fancy doing a bit of a pattern like that but coudlnt do it without a pattern.

Still waiting for my wooll...............tum te tum

MrsHathaway · 08/01/2017 16:54

LEM do you do Pinterest? Will gladly share a board with you if so.

MrsHathaway · 08/01/2017 17:00

How about this owl block with cable elements from among my Pins?

Yddraigoldragon · 08/01/2017 17:02

(Still running from k and p)

Pop that is lovely!

I am very new to crochet, started in July I think, so very unsure of whether I am doing it right. I can do daisy squares, first project was a blanket of them but not ventured much further.

This fred is inspirational.

Hi! I'm bookbook jr - am a newbie to crochet but think I could do some squares if that's of use? If it's okay with everyone then I'll borrow some of booky's stash!

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 08/01/2017 17:08

Dragon wow! That's beaut!

I just finished my wonky diagonal square. Firefly you are now my new hero- I usually HATE pink, but with orange.... . Grin

That is fab Pop. So you did a normal middle and then picked up the different threads?
(Eyes stash). Hmmm....

And thanks for the kind words, I deliberately didn't include the wonky first bit I made :)

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 08/01/2017 17:20

Dragon I crocheted the flower first, then used the turquoise to make a 3ch space begin every petal. Then I started on then"diagonal" bit, putting clusters in the chains as you would in the last round of a granny square.

Those getting into crochet, I highly recommend this pattern book which is probably 85%+ squares. Some need nudging to six inches, but helpfully the pages are six inches square so it's easy to measure as you go along.

Yddraigoldragon · 08/01/2017 17:30

Mrs H and Pop are both what my DD calls 'enablers'!

I am about 4 rounds off finishing the blandala blanket, haven't touched it in days cos squares are more fun.

To be fair that book looks good.

TheoriginalLEM · 08/01/2017 17:40

Mrshathaway I think I'm on pinterest but ive never been able to get it to work!

KnottyAndPistey · 08/01/2017 17:45
