Our lovely Zombie (who has said she doesn’t mind being outed as Candy) has long been a supporter of Woolly Hugs, bless her for it! Recently she made a very kind donation to us, and we would love to start an Ongoing project to honour this remarkable woman, who we have both had the privilege of meeting, dancing and drinking with. Wine Wine She is utterly fab-u-lous. :)

After a chat with Zombie we have made a plan which she loves. We would like to make comforting cosy blankets with love in every stitch for women going through treatment for breast and other cancers, and at times these may form part of palliative care. They will be called Candy’s Hugs.

Zombie is a bright and beautiful woman so we have chosen a palette to reflect this which we call Vibrant Riot; it is inspired too by a blanket that was made for her to give big hugs as she goes through treatments.

Will you join with us? If you would like to be involved in any way, we’d love to have you on board. Please post on this thread and PM with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, we can help you with all of it.

The yarn is Stylecraft Special DK. Just this please for consistency, and in these colours...

Vibrant Riot Palette
Boysenberry
Claret
Empire
Fuchsia
Grass
Kelly green
Lavender
Lime
Lipstick
Magenta
Meadow
Petrol
Plum
Pomegranate
Saffron
Sherbet
Shrimp
Spice
Turquoise
Tomato
Violet

Squares to be 12 inch or 6 inch, crochet or knitted equally welcome, please use 4mm hook or needles. No blocking necessary and please sew in ends, and make sure any colour changes are firmly knotted.

All crafting abilities genuinely welcome, squares made by beginner or expert will be equally cherished. Simple, complex, single colour, mixed colour. It really is the love and thought that counts.

If you would like to learn how to knit or crochet in 2017, crack on! We have help for the complete beginner here…. And are on hand to help talk you through as well. YouTube has lots of tutorials, you WILL find one that suits! :)

If you feel ambitious and would like to make a whole blanket, then that is wonderful, we are aiming for blankets approx 48 inches by 60 inches, certainly no smaller.

Candy’s Hugs will be an ongoing project, our first posting date is to be January 28th. Do message for posting info when ready.

We are on Facebook - Woolly Hugs and Twitter too @Woolly_Hugs both are good ways to keep in touch.

Thank you so much xx

Thanks

Firefly wash your mouth out...there can NEVER be enough orange! 😁😁😁

jetSTAR · 08/01/2017 12:09

Firefly how do you do the half and half diagonal one??

WildEyedAndCrafty · 08/01/2017 12:45

I've already signed up for this on Facebook so just place marking here too - I will have no excuse for forgetting the deadline Blush.

I love the colour choices and having had to say goodbye to two wonderful family members due to cancer in the past year it will be great to be able to do something positive and help women like them in some small way.

FireflyGirl · 08/01/2017 12:59

I used tutorial, jet. It's not much more complicated than a normal granny square, and I think it looks great in these colours!

Think pink and orange would be great in this one too, Pop Grin

FireflyGirl · 08/01/2017 13:15

It's American, by the way, so treble crochet instead of double.

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 08/01/2017 13:22

Zing lies.

Crochet is the work of the devil.

Just putting that out there!

😬

MrsHathaway · 08/01/2017 13:25

I really like Crochet Crowd tutorials, by the way. They don't do total beginners' videos but they do good project videos. One of my go-to baby blanket patterns is a CC star.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 08/01/2017 13:53

The little BASTARD!!!!

I was looking for orange and blue to try a practice diagonal square...then the phone rang...

Pop Shock Grin He even looks guilty, which is unusual for a cat.
I'm waiting impatiently for my yarn. As I only ordered it Friday evening, I know I am being very unreasonable.

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 08/01/2017 14:33

Captain yabvvvu Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/01/2017 14:35

Dropzone - I taught myself to crochet granny squares using YouTube tutorials - I can't remember which ones, but there are lots.

If you are anywhere near Paisley, I will happily meet up with you and help you with the basics.

CaptainBraandPants · 08/01/2017 14:36

Pop I know. Grin

RaspberryOverloadTheFirst · 08/01/2017 14:59

Pinterest has a lot of granny square patterns with the charts, etc, and some with tutorials.

I've pinned quite a few as some day (when I get some projects completed Grin ) I plan to create a large blanket by using different square patterns with a small palette of colours.

Thank you Firefly doesn't look too hard, will have to give it a go!

MadisonAvenue · 08/01/2017 15:13

I'm just about to start knitting! I've finished the piece I was working on for the refugee project so now I can get cracking with some squares.
Just deciding which stitch pattern to do first Grin

2017couldbegood · 08/01/2017 15:19

I'm in. Will try to do some stripey squares as well as some plain ones. I'm a fairly novice knitter but would love to contribute to this project.

fruitbats · 08/01/2017 15:38

Glen I love your square. The colours are beautiful.
pop Don't feel cheeky asking for the wool. I am not able to crochet or knit but I wanted to take part. I have sent a donation to assist with purchasing wool/postage or whatever., as I know other have. You can do the squares on my behalf. Smile

PopGoesTheFuckingWeasel · 08/01/2017 15:51

fruitbats I've tried to "pay it forward" in more ways than just crocheting. I've shared it on fbk and I've had people ping me offering squares, etc- I've directed them to the official site, but if they pass them on to me, I'll just forward them with mine. In fact, if I get enough, I'll make up a blanket!

Knotty is this allowed?

Now having a go at the half n half from the very useful clip above, thanks firefly! A bit wonky but interesting. Might frog it and have another go.

Yddraigoldragon it's not "wonky", it's"full of character"! 😁 I'm having a go too, now I've untangled the mess from up there^^

KnottyAndPistey · 08/01/2017 16:15

Blimey you lot have been busy...and chatting a lot Grin

Pop , spread the word, make squares, blankets, whatever. This isn't purely an MN project x

KnottyAndPistey · 08/01/2017 16:16

If I see the word wonky used again to describe your lovely works of character, I may get stroppy
