As for so many others, we have been moved to tears by the heartbreaking plight of refugees, both in Europe and further afield, and the inhumanity which seems to surround them too often. We have donated, signed petitions on change.org and written to our MPs, and understand the feeling of shouting in the wind, we desperately want to do more.

There is something practical we can do together, and it really will help, but fabulous Mumsnetters, we are going to need your support.

We can get woolly warmth to families in refugee camps in Kurdistan, thanks to the amazing charity Knit for Peace. There are 1.8 million refugees trapped there, most have fled civil wars and ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Winter is coming, it will be even more desperate and absolutely freezing. We are also developing links to get resources to children and families elsewhere, and on their arrival in the UK. We just want to help keep folk warm. We know we can’t help everyone, but we can some.

We really need your help, here’s how…

  • We need 12 inch, or six inch squares. Knit or crochet both equally welcome.
  • Yarn to be used - any good quality acrylic DK, for example Stylecraft special DK
  • Any colour, any style, it is all good.
  • Squares equally welcome if made by beginner or expert. Truly.
  • No one think their's wouldn’t be good enough. They will be.
  • We'd love to receive whole blankets, but absolutely understand time constraints.
  • We’d also love to receive hats and gloves/mittens for any age, baby sized through to adult, the same for jumpers. But appreciate that is a very big ask.
  • If you’d like to donate yarn or funds, let us know - we’d absolutely LOVE to hear from you, we need you too. This will be a real team effort
  • If anyone would like to join in crafting but can’t afford to, please PM us, we can help.

One square, one blanket, a pair of gloves, one warm hat, one step at a time, really every little thing will help. Together we can make a difference.

Thanks

Sadly we cannot accept items other than home made woolly ones at the moment, if this changes we will come back.

If anyone arrives in this thread and holds similar views to Cameron, no need to post, just move along. This is a positive, humanitarian thread taking positive, humanitarian action.

Do join us on our Facebook page Woolly Hugs and Twitter @Woolly_Hugs - both good ways to keep in touch.

If you'd rather email us than PM we are [email protected]

Thank you doesn’t come close, bless you. Thanks

Morning ladies Smile

Is it still only knits you're after at the moment? I don't knit/crochet or have funds to offer but wondered if there was anything else I could do? I'm quite nifty with a sewing machine if something sewn would be acceptable Smile

KnottyAndPistey · 11/09/2015 10:11

Morning.
At the moment, it's just knits, but we are in discussion with someone who could possibly take other crafty goods too.
When we know for sure, we'll post on this thread. Thanks Flowers

So many beautiful things (and people are working fast!) Star

Would earwarmers be at all suitable do you think? (As in a woollen headband.)

Also quite a few pattern writers are giving away free crochet patterns each day at the moment, I don't know if it's OK to share the links on here, but if you search on Facebook for The Hookeraholic Crochet, Sick Lil Monkeys and Sweet Potato 3 Patterns, all three are giving away one free pattern per day. Some have been hats, gloves and scarves so might be useful for this :) (one of today's was earwarmers, hence my question Grin)

redshoeblueshoe · 11/09/2015 21:29

People are working fast Whatwould, I started a blanket on sunday and its 20 inches long, so it will take at least another week.
Fabulous pictures.
No Brew tonight its Wine all the way Grin

I have a couple of hats done...usual address?

WhenDoISleep · 12/09/2015 19:40

I've only just seen this but I'll contribute a square (possibly two if I get the time).

KnottyAndPistey · 12/09/2015 20:53

Ear-warmers sound good. We'll find a home for them :)

DancingShoes, yes please, the usual.

Thanks all.

Heading off back to messages as we seem to be woolly love bombed, bless you all.

I've got some 12 inch squares done - would you like me to send, or would you like my address to send some more to, and I can hook together to make a blanket?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 12/09/2015 21:55

Gah, nearly had first square done and DS took the needle out, back to the start.

Kr1stina · 13/09/2015 09:01

Bump

GetMeOut · 13/09/2015 10:29

Hi, would a 1m square hap blanket be suitable ? I've got a pattern that sounds as though it would knit up quite quickly ? The pattern is in a chunky wool though, so would that be too bulky to send ? If it is too bulky I could do it in DK ( though it won't knit up so quickly ??).

Likewise, would you also be interested in granny squares crocheted in a thick chunky wool? My stash seems mainly to be chunky I'm afraid.

Mhw02 · 13/09/2015 15:19

Posted a parcel yesterday so will hopefully arrive tomorrow. Had hoped to send a bit more, but ran out of time to sew in ends, so will probably send another parcel next weekend!

I have a REALLY stupid question: if I block squares for a blanket I'm making, does the blanket have to be re-blocked every time it's washed?
