As for so many others, we have been moved to tears by the heartbreaking plight of refugees, both in Europe and further afield, and the inhumanity which seems to surround them too often. We have donated, signed petitions on change.org and written to our MPs, and understand the feeling of shouting in the wind, we desperately want to do more.

There is something practical we can do together, and it really will help, but fabulous Mumsnetters, we are going to need your support.

We can get woolly warmth to families in refugee camps in Kurdistan, thanks to the amazing charity Knit for Peace. There are 1.8 million refugees trapped there, most have fled civil wars and ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Winter is coming, it will be even more desperate and absolutely freezing. We are also developing links to get resources to children and families elsewhere, and on their arrival in the UK. We just want to help keep folk warm. We know we can’t help everyone, but we can some.

We really need your help, here’s how…

  • We need 12 inch, or six inch squares. Knit or crochet both equally welcome.
  • Yarn to be used - any good quality acrylic DK, for example Stylecraft special DK
  • Any colour, any style, it is all good.
  • Squares equally welcome if made by beginner or expert. Truly.
  • No one think their's wouldn’t be good enough. They will be.
  • We'd love to receive whole blankets, but absolutely understand time constraints.
  • We’d also love to receive hats and gloves/mittens for any age, baby sized through to adult, the same for jumpers. But appreciate that is a very big ask.
  • If you’d like to donate yarn or funds, let us know - we’d absolutely LOVE to hear from you, we need you too. This will be a real team effort
  • If anyone would like to join in crafting but can’t afford to, please PM us, we can help.

One square, one blanket, a pair of gloves, one warm hat, one step at a time, really every little thing will help. Together we can make a difference.

Thanks

Sadly we cannot accept items other than home made woolly ones at the moment, if this changes we will come back.

If anyone arrives in this thread and holds similar views to Cameron, no need to post, just move along. This is a positive, humanitarian thread taking positive, humanitarian action.

Thank you doesn’t come close, bless you. Thanks

I havent done woolly hugs project before and my knitting is very plain, rather slow and occasionally slightly dodgy but I really want to join in on this. Will have a look at what wool I have.

Morning, just catching up Brew

Thank you everyone so much Thanks

Gloopy How many squares have you got and what sort of colours? Very happy to send you enough to top up. We are aiming for 3 by 4 twelve inch squared blankets, so a good size to wrap up in. Thank you Thanks

Five - Oh how frustrating!

GetMeOut - We'd love your !m blanket, yes please, happy for you to use the chunky yarn, but go for a whole blanket if that's OK? All our separate squares are going to be DK, easier to make collections. Thank you Thanks

Mhw - am here today, bless you. Thank you Thanks I have no idea re the blocking and reblocking, but will endeavour to find out for you.

OhYouBadKitten - Welcome on board, very glad to have you here, don't say dodgy say full of character! And you know what, a simple square will help keep a child warn just as much as a more complex design. It's all good bless you. Shout if we can send yarn to you. Thank you Thanks

The first collection of twelve/six inch squares is already being hooked into a blanket. What an amazing team effort this is!

More Brew, thank you xxx

I have four, done in Bergere de France Barisienne (prob closer in texture to Robin, rather than SSDK). V. similar colours to the Lily Pond CAl - pink/purple/green/grey. Want pictures?

Hi, I wasn't going to volunteer for this as I have too much on at the moment even though I want to do my bit. However, I remembered that I have 23 6" squares in the back of the WIP cupboard from another project I started and couldn't finish in time (nite to self: if in a hurry hook don't knit). It was meant for an older boy and it was going to be at least 35 blocks (5 x7) so the colours are browns and turquoise. One of the turquoise squares is quite pale and I kniw from a certain FB group ( Wink ) that you don't really want pastels. I also have used parchment although I thought of all the pale colours it was the least likely to show the dirt so would be OK for places where washing facilities are scarce.

Anyway, to cut through the waffling, do you want them? I could do one more square to make it 24 (I have time for that just not time to start from scratch) and then you could get it put together as a baby blanket. Or, I can leave the 23 as they are and you can split them up as you see fit. What do you think ladies?

You should ask for a special extension, just for you. I wonder if Tech could do it?

KnottyAndPistey · 14/09/2015 15:09

Be nice! They've probably got other things to worry about right now though Wine

Tis so frustrating but we do actually each have our own quota too, as shall be demonstrated in two ticks Grin

This is one of a set of seven beautiful home knit baby cardis given to lovely MrsKwazii's beautiful girls, but were unused as she was blessed with so many. She is now donating them to our refugee project, which is utterly fantastic. Heartfelt thanks to MrsK. Star Thanks

Hello.

I have some spare time in the evenings at the moment, as with the nights getting darker earlier, I can't mosaic as long as I only work in daylight.

Even though it's over 20 years since I last knitted I've just dug out all my needles and found some rainbow mohair wool - is that ok?

Also, what size needles and how many stitches are needed for the 6 inch squares please?

As soon as you can let me know I can start.

Many thanks and Flowers for you all for this wonderful project, though I'm sad that there is such a need.

ArtyBat · 14/09/2015 19:25

Just read the thread properly all the way through and found the info I need....so will get cracking.
