As we did last year, we would love to make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus, who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non-specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.

*Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

*If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 23rd May, so we have a chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful.
Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address.

We know together we can do this – last year was an astonishing team effort.
On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Thanks for your concern, Soupy. Yes, now I've replenished my stash I'm fine Grin

It was a sort of "oh, how did that happen" moment when I looked in my bag and my box and found a grand total of one ball of Rowan pure wool in pink, two half balls of some generic white acrylic (which have been binned as the yarn was giving me contact dermatitis) and half a ball of grey Sirdar snuggly.

Mhw02 noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

SoupDragon · 17/04/2015 16:04

Oh, I'm SO relieved! I had come over all faint at the thought of a Hooker/Knitter with no stash.

I have stash, secondary stash, emergency stash, stash earmarked for special projects, secret stash and stash I had forgotten about.

CoffeeandChocolateplease · 17/04/2015 16:24

I'd like to do some squares, count me in. I have quite a bit of stylecraft so will have a look in my stash!

ilove · 17/04/2015 16:25

I've had to have a bit of a sit down at the thought...

SoupDragon · 17/04/2015 16:28

I've had to buy yarn...

DaisyQuantock · 17/04/2015 17:26

I'm in Pistey & Knotty, loved making them last year and seeing the pics. It was such a lovely project and I'm so pleased they loved them.

Will pm.

Ooh I'm a novice knitter really but would love to try a square - they all look so lovely on the blankets though, are there any patterns or anything I could use?

Happy to provide my own wool but not sure I have the type you need in my stash, can I buy it easily? Am in Leeds so have most shops available Smile

Was just talking knitting (secret habit) with my friend today and can't wait to start some new projects!

MrsKCastle · 17/04/2015 17:56

I'm in as well, have really got into knitting recently and keep thinking that I should join in with woolly hugs! Like TheGirlFromIpanema I'm a bit of a novice though, so any tips are welcome. Would a fairly plain square with some flowers added on be suitable?

Mhw02 · 17/04/2015 19:14

It's okay, everyone, really! I bought 8 balls in the shop in Partick yesterday and ordered another 18 balls from woolwarehouse when I got home, so I've got plenty now. (Though still need to order some white to make some Angels Hugs).

By the way, I tried the code SC10 on the off chance it was valid and it worked for 10% off at wool warehouse.

It only happened because I have three blankets with un-sewn-in-ends in my stash bag which performed the rather cruel optical illusion of making me think there was useable yarn in there!

Newbies! Fabularse :)

There are patterns for 6" squares in our Crafting Guide on our website www.woollyhugs.com

We usually suggest casting on 33 stitches using 4mm needles for a 6 inch square, so double that for a 12"er.
Don't worry about fancy pants patterns if you are fairly new to knitty or hooky business: squares made with love and thought are equally treasured.

Almost never, Thankyou so much. If you'd like to pm me I can give you the address for the treasurer of the charity xxx

Jacksmania · 18/04/2015 18:34

I've got two done.

Question, Knotty and Pistey: the Aspen and Cloud Blue square is about 1 cm too big all around. Do you want me to frog it back, or is an oversized square occasionally useful to fill in slightly-too-small areas?

What, did I break the thread??

RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/04/2015 08:46

Soz lovely Jacks, has been a madly busy weekend, but please don't frog the square! As we always say, there is quite a variation on a twelve inch square, and one centimetre will be just fine, thank you so much, they look fabulous. You Star

Thanks
RatherBeOnThePiste · 20/04/2015 08:47

Almostnever - that is so kind of you, thank you, ilove will help you with the charity part, and I can come now and help you with the woolly wool part, we really appreciate your support, you are a Star too!

Thanks
