As we did last year, we would love to make Little Hugs for a group of teenagers coming over to Leeds for a recuperative holiday in the summer with the fabulous charity the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Each year these marvellous folk bring children over from Belarus, who live in the most contaminated area near the Chernobyl reactor. In summer, when the dust causes radiation levels to rise, it becomes even more important for as many children as possible to leave their contaminated homeland for a few weeks of fresh air and clean food. The rates of childhood cancer are at 75%; the most common cancers being thyroid and leukaemia. Coming to the UK for a four week break increases their immunity against the awful disease by up to 3 years when they return home.

This year the group in Leeds (organised by an amazing MNer) are bringing twelve children who have had cancer and are now in remission. Sadly though there is a high chance of these children falling ill again. This summer there are four boys and eight girls coming, aged between 11 and 14. They all suffer living in such difficult conditions and with very little. How perfect it would be to make them each a Little Hug.

Here's how to help with this project.....

We would like 12" squares in bright and cheery Stylecraft Special DK colours.
PLEASE AVOID bright green, bright pink, browns, greys, citron, sunshine, fiesta and jaffa. This will help squares fit together more easily. Make for a boy, girl or in a non-specific colour theme. We will be happy to accept 6" squares if making a 12" one feels too much.

*Crochet or knitted, 4mm hook or needles. No blocking and please sew in pesky ends.

*If needed, we can supply yarn. Let us know if we can send to you.

  • Our last posting is Saturday 23rd May, so we have a chance of getting the blankets ready to go to the children on their arrival in the UK.

  • If anyone would like to donate funds to support this, we would be so grateful.
Our paypal is [email protected] . Cheques and cash are very welcome too, just PM for the address.

We know together we can do this – last year was an astonishing team effort.
On behalf of these children, a huge THANK YOU.

Pistey and Knotty X

Can I have some colour help please?

I've got emperor, lilac and silver which look lovely together but I see that you don't want greys. What else can I use or is it OK with those colours ?

And...

I've got turquoise, lime, teal and meadow plus. What else can I add in to stop it looking so green. I might have a bit of spice knocking around. Would that do? Or should I buy some parchment?

I really want to put the lime with some fondant - I think a trip to the yarn shop is in order once someone tells me what to do

KnottyLocks · 05/05/2015 21:13

Woolly, be with you once reluctant to sleep child gives in.

KnottyAndPistey · 05/05/2015 22:03

Right, Woolly is your 'Lilac' Violet/Lavender/Wisteria?
We are trying to avoid the greys, yes.
Magenta packs a punch and would look good against Emperor, Violet, Lav...or if you want to go softer you could use the paler pinks (Candy Floss/fondant/pale rose)
Alternatively, forget pink and bung the meadow in.

Teal, lime/meadow and spice would be zingy.

If you want to, put the lime with fondant! Spice as a perky boost.

Not sure if that's made it worse for you! Grin

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm clueless. Grin

I've just had a look at the shade card and think it's Lavender. The ball band is a thing of the past.

I think I'm going to use Emperor/Meadow/Lavender and should have enough for a couple of panels. I'll have a rummage and see if I have enough for at least one Turquoise/Spice panel and then I'll get some Fondant or Magenta to mix with the Lime.

Off to the post office with my square.

It's not as fancy as some, and a little small (ran out of donor wool) but hope it's ok

These panels being sent in are SO beautiful and elaborate. The ones I've done so far (not yet sent in!) are generally pretty plain...but I'm hoping they'll look more exciting when hooked together...

RiaOverTheRainbow · 08/05/2015 01:04

Is the new parma violet allowed? It looks borderline grey/purple to me, not sure whether it's too grey?

KnottyAndPistey · 08/05/2015 11:28

Lovely Ria I think the colour parma violet is ok, suspect it is one of those that changes according to the mix of others.

Parma violets the sweets however, are the spawn of the devil and taste of old ladies handbags.

Not that I have ever eaten an old lady's handbag, but i JUST KNOW Grin
