Woolly Hugs Guide to Running

  1. Put down your woolly wool, crochet hooks and needles.
  2. Find your trainers, these are sort of soft bouncy shoe-things that go on your feet.
  3. Find something loose and comfortable to wear, and no we don't mean a caftan.
  4. Open front door and go outside Shock
  5. Put one foot in front of the other with speed and determination!

YOU are RUNNING!!

If you haven't seen Phase 2 of our Little Hugs, the thread is HERE. We launched this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. We launched this at the time of her 21st birthday and we call the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, and through World Child Cancer, we will send little blankets to children, starting with Malawi and Bangladesh, who really need a Woolly Hug and to feel loved and looked after.

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation to World Child Cancer, as money is scarce, they really have so little. One of the ways we will do this is by running! In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we are now looking for runners to enter 5K runs throughout the country.

These are where the 5K runs will take place?.. They are all over!

There are already runners committed to running (BIWI, TantrumsandBalloons,me) in London at Crystal Palace on October 13th, and lovely Fizzy and PrettyBird are running in the Glasgow event on July 27th. We would love folk to join with us, or run at a different venue! There is no minimum age and children can be entered, my daughter is running with me, I say with, she will shoot off like a gazelle and I will lumber along. Happily the website says they love fancy dress

Because World Child Cancer isn't a nominated charity we/they ask that you let them know independently. To take pressure off individuals, and to make this a real woolly community effort we recommend that you use our Woolly Hugs Just Giving page for fundraising. Anything you raise will be marvellous, really, and we will all be able to see how much we can raise together.

Our Just Giving Page is HERE Donations are welcome at any time, huge thanks for those already in.

So please have a think, if you are interested, we would recommend entering soon to avoid disappointment. Let us know when you have entered so we can cheer you on, and please use this thread for support, and general running things Couch to 5K apps and playlists for running spring to mind.

The children that WCC support need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family Xx

Knotty and Pistey

Thanks

Back from wk 9 run 1, 7.4km done :) and over 500calories burnt apparently... Hmm

MegBusset · 17/04/2013 13:42

That's a lot of Maltesers :)

Enjoyed my 5k run today - third one since Sat and feel like my stamina has now recovered from having a few weeks off. Do need to start increasing the distance soon though!

MegBusset · 17/04/2013 13:42

Oh and I ran in my World Child Cancer vest which arrived this morning :)

5madthings · 17/04/2013 14:04

Yes my vest arrived today as well, I have actually just spoken to kustom clothing as I am getting them to do me a vest with whateverthrweathers dd's name on Erin and it will say world child cancer and a quote whatever would like and then I thought I would get them to put 'woollyhugs' on the back as we'll :) they were very nice and will send me a draft of what the top will look like etc and then it takes 7-10days. They make lots of charity running vests but are also happy to do one off custom orders :)

Apparently it was 577 calories, that sounds a good amount! I feel quite energized, have had a shower and am chilling whilst dd sleeps before school run. I plan on running to borrow as dp is at home, then Fri off before the park run on Saturday.

meg I have been pleased that increasing the distance ehas been OK, hoping to get to 8km tomorrow as I wasn't far off it today and the do a few runs at 8km for a week or so before increasing the distance a bit more.

I had an email from bupa today inviting me to do a run the day before the 10k, just a mile up the strand or something?

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 17/04/2013 22:07

And my vest arrived today as well!

5madthings · 17/04/2013 23:12

Can I ask what emails people have had from bupa? I only have the original 'you are registered your number is' and it says final details including race number will be sent two weeks before ra e but some people have had an email about online registration?

I will ring them next week but wondered if I am the only one not to have got the email re online registration?

5madthings · 18/04/2013 10:10

OK managed to speak to bupa and gave my ref number, they have me on their system and I def have a place, was feeling paranoid as I hadn't got email re online registration but apparently they are for those who have 'charity' places. When I applied I just did it as a normal runner as world child cancer wasn't on their list. Anyway I explained I am running for charity just not a listed one. But its fine and I haven't not got an email that I need :) phew!

MegBusset · 18/04/2013 10:34

I haven't had anything from them lately. Nothing about the run on the Strand...

5madthings · 18/04/2013 10:39

Well i am obviously special then nerrr! :p

I am meant to be running today but its a bit windy....

MegBusset · 18/04/2013 10:44

Bit windy is an understatement! Glad I went yesterday, rather achey legs today though. I'm off to London for my friend's birthday dinner this afternoon.

5madthings · 18/04/2013 11:09

Yes it is very windy. I ran yesterday as well but dp now has to do a double shift tomorrow so cant run then. Figured i could run today, rest day fri then parkrun sat would be four runs this week.

I think i will run and just not push myself too much plus the wind means i must surely burn extra calories.

Enjoy the birthday dinner meg does that mean you may have a sore head at toddler tomorrow morning? Grin

BIWI · 18/04/2013 11:59

.... or if you run with the wind behind you it could speed you up!

5madthings · 18/04/2013 12:04

Except its the kind of wind that is always against you no matter which direction you run as its really blustery! You know when you run and you keep thinking that round the next corner the wind will be behind you but it never is!

Btw biwi i have seen you mention a low carb diet? Where would i look on mnet to find the thread about it? Want to lose the last half stone and wondering if low carb will help.

BIWI · 18/04/2013 12:26

I bore for Britain about low carbing, 5madthings!

You need to join Bootcamp Here is the thread about it

5madthings · 18/04/2013 12:33

Ooh thankyou :)

5madthings · 18/04/2013 15:26

II am Shock has anyone else seen the aibu thread about runners pooling she out running?!! Apparently its quite common for dinners to take a dump she they run! Lots of links...one bloke who fishes a poo out of his pants as he runs along and throws it away...for the love of god that is not normal is it?!

MegBusset · 18/04/2013 16:00

Shock I daren't look!

Though I did have a friend who ran the London Marathon one year and had to wee in the street as there were no toilets in sight!!

BIWI · 18/04/2013 16:01

Isn't this what Paula Radcliffe did during one of the marathons?!

5madthings · 18/04/2013 16:13

A wee is understandable but a poo!!! I thought paula radcliffe just weed but on the thread about the poo in the street they said she pooed...

Blatherskite · 18/04/2013 16:43

I'm sure she just weed.

Getting nervous about tonight's run now

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 18/04/2013 17:39

I was about to go running, but it has started to alternate between rain and hailstones and a big black cloud has appeared above the park. I need a leg stretch - I haven't been out since the weekend, and spent most of yesterday in a car and today on a train.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 18/04/2013 17:40
NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 18/04/2013 17:49

(and staying close to home in case of adverse weather or need for bathroom breaks)

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 18/04/2013 18:31

Glad I went - there was a beautiful rainbow as I was coming home.

5madthings · 19/04/2013 11:34

I didn't get out yesterday, was going to go this evening and let ds1 babysit bit merry is now puking everywhere...
I ran on Mon and wed and am doing the parkrun with meg tomorrow tho :)

Can I say meg is a star and helped clear up and mop the floor at toddlers after merry puked everywhere, she seemed a bit tired but I thought that was because she had her MMR yesterday and then the puke came out of nowhere so it must be a bug. Hope we haven't give it to everyone at toddlers!
