Woolly Hugs Guide to Running

  1. Put down your woolly wool, crochet hooks and needles.
  2. Find your trainers, these are sort of soft bouncy shoe-things that go on your feet.
  3. Find something loose and comfortable to wear, and no we don't mean a caftan.
  4. Open front door and go outside Shock
  5. Put one foot in front of the other with speed and determination!

YOU are RUNNING!!

If you haven't seen Phase 2 of our Little Hugs, the thread is HERE. We launched this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. We launched this at the time of her 21st birthday and we call the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, and through World Child Cancer, we will send little blankets to children, starting with Malawi and Bangladesh, who really need a Woolly Hug and to feel loved and looked after.

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation to World Child Cancer, as money is scarce, they really have so little. One of the ways we will do this is by running! In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we are now looking for runners to enter 5K runs throughout the country.

These are where the 5K runs will take place?.. They are all over!

There are already runners committed to running (BIWI, TantrumsandBalloons,me) in London at Crystal Palace on October 13th, and lovely Fizzy and PrettyBird are running in the Glasgow event on July 27th. We would love folk to join with us, or run at a different venue! There is no minimum age and children can be entered, my daughter is running with me, I say with, she will shoot off like a gazelle and I will lumber along. Happily the website says they love fancy dress

Because World Child Cancer isn't a nominated charity we/they ask that you let them know independently. To take pressure off individuals, and to make this a real woolly community effort we recommend that you use our Woolly Hugs Just Giving page for fundraising. Anything you raise will be marvellous, really, and we will all be able to see how much we can raise together.

Our Just Giving Page is HERE Donations are welcome at any time, huge thanks for those already in.

So please have a think, if you are interested, we would recommend entering soon to avoid disappointment. Let us know when you have entered so we can cheer you on, and please use this thread for support, and general running things Couch to 5K apps and playlists for running spring to mind.

The children that WCC support need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family Xx

Knotty and Pistey

Thanks

Hope your run went ok blathers i am just back from a 6.5k run. I was meant to be doing wk 5 run 2 but the app stopped working so i just ran for ten mins then walked two mins then ran for ten mins etc
i got snowed and hailed on, hail hurts!

BIWI · 10/03/2013 14:23

Well I did my 20 minute run this morning! Grin

It wasn't too bad. I wasn't enjoying the second 5 minutes, but it was alright after that. It was cold though. So cold when I first set off that my eyes were really watering and I was worried I was going to lose one/both of my contact lenses! Took me a while to warm up.

Blatherskite · 10/03/2013 15:35

The snow didn't hold off and I spent the whole run breathing in snowflakes but I managed my 10k in 56:47 which is a new PB for me so I'm very happy.

Then I got taken out for Mother's day lunch and have definitely more than replaced the calories I burnt Blush

5madthings · 10/03/2013 15:39

Wow well done blathers

I agree its not nice in the snow i had to just keep my head done or else it was going in my eyes. I prefer snow to hail tho!

Yay for lovely meal out and talking of calories anyone with me on fb will have seen the 8!!! Boxes of maltesers i got for mothers day!

BIWI · 10/03/2013 16:48

Brilliant, Blathers!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 10/03/2013 17:31

Blathers that is AMAZING! I would love to crack an hour for a 10K but have never managed it yet. And in snow as well. You must have burnt extra calories staying warm Grin.

BIWI - well done. see, it wasn't that bad after all.

5mad - well done, and enjoy those maltesers. The boxes remind me of my late nana, she alway used to bring home a box on Friday nights when I was little and share them with me.

I have had 2 runs today - a couple of miles to the Park to meet friends, and then a lap of the park. About 8 miles in total, and probably the longest I'll do before my half marathon next week

5madthings · 10/03/2013 17:39

8miles! Well done. Yes my app told me I had burnt 300calories but given how cold and windy it was I reckon I burnt more!

I love maltesers they are my favorite chocolate, merryn seems to be following in my footsteps and HSS spent much if the day asking for 'teasers' :)

Well done all those who've been out today. I made it as far as looking out of the window at the driving sleet/snow, and deciding to stay in and bake chocolate muffins instead.

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:02

Oh, and I used mapmyrun to plot where I had run, and it worked out at just over 3K, so that made me feel really good. Suddenly 5K really does seem achievable.

5madthings · 10/03/2013 18:09

biwi I use mapmyrun as well, meg recommended it, it works really well and keeps a log of all your runs and tells you calories burnt etc, I like it :)

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:21

Oh, I didn't see the calorie info as well. Mind you, that's usually a disappointingly small number given the effort that goes into exercise. Grin

5madthings · 10/03/2013 18:23

I think you have to put in your height and weight to get it to tell you calories burnt and set it to tell you in settings and yes its a crap amount, today's run burnt 300calories, not even a box of maltesers :(

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:25

Where do you find the calorie info? I can't see it!

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:26

I've put in my height/weight

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:28

Oh found it - 241 calories. Not a lot, is it?!

5madthings · 10/03/2013 18:29

Click on 'workouts' and it will come up with a list of the runs you have done. Then press which workout you want and it will show the map if your run and under that calories burnt and your average time is mine says 309 can, prices and 7min/km

You can set it to km or miles.

5madthings · 10/03/2013 18:30

Cross posted, no its not a .of but I reckon in the cold you must burn more than that... so am eating maltesers

5madthings · 10/03/2013 18:30

309 calories and average pace is 7min/km

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:31
Grin

And I did the run in a fasted state, so hopefully will have kicked the fat-burning back into action (after a week of eating way too many carbs)

5madthings · 10/03/2013 18:33

Indeed! Apparently your body burns calories faster straight after exercise for about ah hour, so that Sunday dinner I ate after my run doesn't count! Grin

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:33
Grin
Blatherskite · 10/03/2013 18:35

Apparently, running in the cold does burn more calories. Not sure why that is though

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:38

Don't think I was running especially fast though - 9.24 km/hr.

BIWI · 10/03/2013 18:39

Average pace 6.49 min/km
