Woolly Hugs Guide to Running

  1. Put down your woolly wool, crochet hooks and needles.
  2. Find your trainers, these are sort of soft bouncy shoe-things that go on your feet.
  3. Find something loose and comfortable to wear, and no we don't mean a caftan.
  4. Open front door and go outside Shock
  5. Put one foot in front of the other with speed and determination!

YOU are RUNNING!!

If you haven't seen Phase 2 of our Little Hugs, the thread is HERE. We launched this phase as a tribute to beautiful Billie, our lovely MrsDeVere's daughter, who devastatingly died at 14 from leukaemia. We launched this at the time of her 21st birthday and we call the project Billie's Blankets in her memory. In her name, and through World Child Cancer, we will send little blankets to children, starting with Malawi and Bangladesh, who really need a Woolly Hug and to feel loved and looked after.

Alongside Billie's Blankets, we are very keen to send a donation to World Child Cancer, as money is scarce, they really have so little. One of the ways we will do this is by running! In May a Woolly Hugs' team will be running the BUPA London 10k, and we are now looking for runners to enter 5K runs throughout the country.

These are where the 5K runs will take place?.. They are all over!

There are already runners committed to running (BIWI, TantrumsandBalloons,me) in London at Crystal Palace on October 13th, and lovely Fizzy and PrettyBird are running in the Glasgow event on July 27th. We would love folk to join with us, or run at a different venue! There is no minimum age and children can be entered, my daughter is running with me, I say with, she will shoot off like a gazelle and I will lumber along. Happily the website says they love fancy dress

Because World Child Cancer isn't a nominated charity we/they ask that you let them know independently. To take pressure off individuals, and to make this a real woolly community effort we recommend that you use our Woolly Hugs Just Giving page for fundraising. Anything you raise will be marvellous, really, and we will all be able to see how much we can raise together.

Our Just Giving Page is HERE Donations are welcome at any time, huge thanks for those already in.

So please have a think, if you are interested, we would recommend entering soon to avoid disappointment. Let us know when you have entered so we can cheer you on, and please use this thread for support, and general running things Couch to 5K apps and playlists for running spring to mind.

The children that WCC support need all the love and comfort possible. So please, in memory of a sparkling young girl who always thought of others, we'd love you to help us help them.

As ever, thank you so much for your support Thanks

Thinking of Billie and her family Xx

Knotty and Pistey

Thanks

That's a good pace :)

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 10/03/2013 20:00

Any pace is better than being stuck to your sofa Grin.

EasilyBored · 10/03/2013 20:11

Have been a bit haphazard with the running recently, due to hideous work stress. BUT, work stress is now done with and I'm up to doing two circuits of my boring route now. Must pull finger out a bit and get on with it as my darling sis is putting me to shame with her distances!

BIWI · 10/03/2013 21:07

Is it a good pace? I have no idea what to be aiming for. But I decided I should just run at a pace that I felt comfortable with, and to try and keep it consistent during the run.

5madthings · 10/03/2013 21:21

Well a km in 6 mins means 5km in half an hour which is what the couch to 5k program aims for :)

I am interested to see what my pace is when I do 20mins of running rather than run/walk/run/walk.

I am hoping to do wk5 run3 tomorrow when dp gets home from work, he went at 4:30 today and will be home at 6:30pm tomorrow, but if not I will do it on Tues as he has a day off.

I am getting more exercise this eve as dd is playing the get out if bed game, I have been up and downstairs like a yo yo and keep having to pause call the midwife, not impressed!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 10/03/2013 21:35

...which is faster than me Grin

BIWI · 10/03/2013 21:47

But it's such good exercise for you, 5madthings - you should be grateful! Grin

prettybird · 10/03/2013 21:54

The reason why Briffa et al are a bit iffy about exercise helping with weight loss is precisely because you don't actually burn that many calories in short bouts of energy - yet you might eat more to compensate.

I used to find that it took until I was running 4+ miles before my appetite was suppressed rather than stimulated.

BIWI · 10/03/2013 22:09

Oh yes, I'm very wary of that, prettybird, which is also one reason why I'm running in a fasted state.

5madthings · 10/03/2013 23:05

I'vefound that I am less hungry but I also go running when I am hungry and make sure I haven't eaten for at least two hours before exercise. I have lost a stone since Xmas :) but I have always found that as soon as I exercise regularly I lose weight easily, its what I have done after each DC.

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 11/03/2013 12:00

Well done on the weight loss 5mad!

MegBusset · 12/03/2013 11:18

Really should go out this afternoon. It is so UTTERLY BASTARD COLD out there today. I just can't face it.

5madthings · 12/03/2013 11:26

meg i will be going out later.... Yes it is cold, but its not actually snowing which is a bonus....

And thanks shredded tho given dd is 26mths it was about time i lost the baby weight etc Blush

Blatherskite · 12/03/2013 11:32

I'm considering a day off.

I swear it was actually warmer when I was running in the snow on Sunday!

2 10ks in 3 days is too much right?

BIWI · 12/03/2013 12:09

About to go out for my run now. Week 6 - how did that happen?! It's gone so quickly! - run 1. I think it's 2 x 5 minutes with 1 x 8 minute run in between those.

The sun is shining though, so although it's cold, it will be pretty outside.

BIWI · 12/03/2013 14:19

Done it! I had all my layers on, including my hat - but also my sunglasses, as it was so sunny!

In the sunshine it was actually quite warm.

Blatherskite · 12/03/2013 14:37

Run club isn't until 6.30 so it'll be dark as well as cold then. It's still snowing here too!

I think I may use my headache as an excuse and stay home eating baked potatoes with the kids tonight.

5madthings · 12/03/2013 15:05

Sounds like a good idea to me blathers

Well done biwi I am going out to do wk 5 run 3 once do gets back from school run, then he can do dinner whilst I am out Grin

BIWI · 12/03/2013 15:31

Good plan!

5madthings · 12/03/2013 19:05

Did wk 5 run 3 i actually kept going and ran for almost 30mins because the app stopped working! Luckily i was using mapmyrun so knew how long i had been going for. It was suprisingly ok :)

JugglingFromHereToThere · 12/03/2013 21:05

Hey Woolly Huggers just dropping by to say did you all see Call the Midwife on Sunday ? I got the distinct feeling they'd decided to knit Miranda a Woolly Hug for her and her new baby !

5madthings · 12/03/2013 21:23

Yes i did and it was lovely when they wrapped her and the baby up together :)

Glaikit · 12/03/2013 21:23

Ah, but did you also notice they "knitted" her a crocheted blanket!!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 12/03/2013 21:27

Oh yes, well spotted Glaikit Smile
Ah, that baby looked sooo cute - just like one of mine !

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/03/2013 10:02

I did notice the knitted crochet too! I am trying to track down the blanket, not sure I'll get anywhere, but neighbour is an editor, so worth a try Smile

Fizzy, why you no Fizzy anymore?

Beautiful day here Smile
