Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

can i just say that this is the first of these projects I have been involved in and this morning stood in the post office queue I was reflecting on what an honour it is to be able to do something no matter how small to let lemon truffles know how much we support her. My squares were definatly not made with skill but they were made with 100% love and if that helps in any way it will be amazing. Piste and Knotty you are stars for organising this. Thanks

RedRosie · 02/02/2013 19:32

Hands of a knitter who is late with her knitting!

You will love it love it love it Pitsey.

Awesome (as the young people say...) Sorry your DH won't be with you, but it will still be awesome. My DH loves tall buildings and was on the phone for THREE hours when bookings opened last autumn, as he wanted to be up there on the first day. He's not had a good 12 months and it made him so happy yesterday!

It will be even more awesome for you as you won't have to dodge Boris Bleedin' Johnson who was up there on Friday cutting ribbons, glad-handing (we hid) and talking wibble.

:)

OpheliaBumps · 02/02/2013 21:30

Sigh, I'm late again, sorry Miss the dog ate my excuse Grin

I posted 2 squares and a knocker today, first class, so they should be with you on Monday.

Right, better crack on with my angel hug and Billie's blanket. Angel hug up to 18" now, and 5 squares done on my Billie, yay!

Brave you going up the Shard. I'm terrible with heights, it's my worst nightmare!

Schooldidi · 02/02/2013 22:11

I'm late as well, sorry.

I posted mine this morning so they shoulf be there soon.

KnottyLocks · 03/02/2013 00:06

Ah, lovely folks . Panic not , Pistey will be shaking too much to type for a couple of days. Shard shakes , innit.

Skoggy · 03/02/2013 00:57

I'm so glad you got them so quickly. :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 03/02/2013 10:18

Morning all Smile Brew

Rosie, I am so, so glad that your DH had a great time X Wouldn't it have been funny/frustrating if we'd been there at the same time, but didn't realise until after?! But I am glad I wasn't stuck up the shard with Boris #alsonotaeuphemism that for me would have been a shocker. Grin I must say love heights, there was a fundraising parachute jump advertised for Yorkhill, and part of me was really tempted, but my family were so Shock horrified that I had to forget about it.

Please don't anyone fret about delayed squares, we know quite a few folk are posting later, and it is all good. It has been a very busy time, we really do understand. We certainly don't want anyone worrying Smile

Didi Never lose the didi bit will you, or we will never keep up with you!

Skoggy I genuinely have no idea how you made the dragon. Tiny, tiny stitches. It reminded me of the Elves and the Shoemaker story, not saying that you are an elf obv. Are you an Elf?

Dita Bless your heart, we know exactly what you mean, it really is, for us too, and it is what lies at the heart of the blanket making. The blanket is so much more than just woolly squares. We know already that lemon is feeling such comfort, just at the thought of our community coming together around her, with compassion and love. And when the squares arrive, you can just feel that there's a huge amount of humanity included within. Strengthens your faith it does.

I am rubbish at articulating and not doing very well, I think I need more caffeine. Tis a big coffee day today, that's for sure.

OP posts:
RedRosie · 03/02/2013 12:31

Pitsey, as ever, is brilliant at articulating.

I bow to your energy and committment Pitsey and Knotty, and everyone else involved in managing these complex projects.

Ian The Interim Green Sheep is now on my profile, and will be in the post tomorrow.

LemonTruffles: if you are reading this I hope all this woolly activity has given you at least some comfort. Everyone is thinking of you.

BIWI · 03/02/2013 14:04

I love Ian!

RedRosie · 03/02/2013 14:58

Thanks Biwi! It's not very good really. Knitted very slowly, stitch by painful stitch, counting furiously - following Tribpots fully written out and patient "sheep pattern for dummies". I have no talent for this - which is why I donate as well as knit. I always imagine that the person I've sent wool to will produce something accomplished. :)

Trib is another star. Thanks again Trib! Thanks

BIWI · 03/02/2013 17:09

RedRosie - it's fantastic and infinitely better than anything I'm able to do!

Trazzletoes · 03/02/2013 21:53

OMG Pistey you are a full-on GENIUS!!!!

I've crocheted in a circle! Or a square... Or round rather than lines anyway!!!! I can't quite believe it. It's amazing.

Thank you thank you thank you.

I thought I would never manage it!

Incidentally, and I don't mean to sound like an idiot - I was using the end of the donor wool to practice Blush because its so much nicer than the stuff I got to teach myself... I've never got so far through a ball of wool before so I don't know if this is normal, but I came across a knot in the wool where it was quite obvious there had been a break in the wool and it had been tied back together during manufacture...

Is that normal? If not, I will unpick so you can send it back and get the donor money back. If it is, it would be nice to know so I don't make a fool of myself in the future by complaining Blush

Thanks thanks thanks again. Can't believe I've managed to do a square-ish!

tribpot · 03/02/2013 21:56

Trazzle - it is normal :) You either carry on regardless or stop and deal with it as if it were the end of one ball and the start of another.

ditavonteesed · 03/02/2013 22:04

trazzle mine had one of those as well, I just carried on and ignored it

RatherBeOnThePiste · 03/02/2013 22:07

I would just like to say that Trazzle is my new best friend

OP posts:

Grin

She'll be on about this forever.

Trazzles, wothaveyoudone?!

MNPin2013 · 04/02/2013 00:23

Most annoying Trazzles, mine often turn up just a few stitches from a turn or finish off...grr

wanting · 04/02/2013 00:47

I am so sorry for lemontruffles. I am sure she will love you blanket and thank you very much.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/02/2013 07:40

I think the phrase was

full-on GENIUS

Just saying...

Morning Brew

Yes, Trazzles, happened to us all, and it is bloody annoying

Thank you Wanting, We very much hope she will too Thanks
