Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.

Ye olde paper shoppe here had nerds the last time I was in!

GlaikitFizzog · 01/02/2013 17:10

No they didn't it was millions! Nerds are hard and sour aren't they?!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/02/2013 17:12

Gritty things, and sour yes, DD loves the watermelon ones, which make my eyeballs feel like they are about to fall out.

Fizzy Big Red? Wasn't that the cinnamon chewing gum?

I get American candy sent to me through my crocheting circle. Being that Crochetville is mainly an American forum, most of the swap partners I've had have been American. They have me hooked (no pun) on Flipz, chocolate covered pretzels. I know M&S sell chocolate covered pretzels but Flipz are something else. I like the fudge covered ones too.

GlaikitFizzog · 01/02/2013 17:22

Chocolate covered pretzels! They did them for a while here when I was in sixth year at school (staple vending machine breakfast!) but I've not seen them for ages! Milk or white chocolate!

GlaikitFizzog · 01/02/2013 17:24

Sorry went off thinking about pretzels forgot to say, yes I think it's big red! One time my colleague got cocky and thought I might like some chocolate and took back the biggest bag of Hershey kisses! I used that as an example of his failure to follow simple instructions!! :o

Skoggy · 01/02/2013 17:35

There is an American candy shop in the Metrocentre in Gateshead and they sell Flipz but the price on them is stupid!

Nerds, aren't they Wonka candy? Nerds, Gobstoppers and Runts. They've all made a come back. I can get them in Fenwicks. LOADS of Wonka candy in there. And Reeses stuff, and the different M&Ms.

ditavonteesed · 01/02/2013 17:40

have done 2, seeing if I can get a third out of the wool, I think I can based on the weight of the rest of the ball and the weight of the squares I have done (very scientific), I have to confess having looked at some of the squares on the website mine are very plain and boring. watermelon nerds yum

JulesJules · 01/02/2013 20:48

oooooooooooooo reeses pieces

Welsh landscapey squares and a solitary purple nork should be galloping pistey-wards

on the wooly hugs site it goes off the writing too quickly, is there any way to pause it, I would love to see what people have said about their blankets?

Trazzletoes · 01/02/2013 22:56

Glaikit we must be about the same age - I have similar pretzel-related memories.

sleepingsatellite18 · 02/02/2013 00:07

Hello, just read lemontruffles thread.
I'm new to reading this website and I'm so moved by all the support on here already.

Am I too late to offer my help?
I am not creative at all (!) but could happily be a donor.

If its not too late please tell me what to do x x

Skoggy · 02/02/2013 00:38

Tab Clear was another thing that tried to make it over here but failed. Mind you, I think it failed on an international basis. lol Grin

ditavonteesed · 02/02/2013 08:58

Just in case piste is out or something, would anyone else be able to pm me the address to send the squares to so I can get them in the post this morning. ta Smile

KnottyLocks · 02/02/2013 09:11

Dita, Pistey is getting knitted knockers from the Post office so should be back very soon.

SleepingSatellite, bless you and thank you. You can donate via Paypal on our website : www.woollyhugs.com. Just include a message with your donation with your MN name so we can confirm Thanks

GlaikitFizzog · 02/02/2013 09:23

trazzle I'm 31 21 and a half plus a wee bit! :o those were the days! Chips every day for lunch, multitude of sweets from the tuck shop! Every morning break a delivery was made from the local baker of Aberdeen rowies (salty lard laden bread roll type things ) 500 cals a pop and sausage rolls that would give greggs a run for their money! Now my old school is all hummus and birdseed (according to a friend)! Where are the memories for this generation going to come from!

NeitherShreddedNorSmug · 02/02/2013 10:44

I'm so sorry to have come empty handed - I didn't have time to check the thread before I left. But will bring lots next time!

For whoever was asking about knitting needles - I got my wooden ones through security at JFK no problem, and knitted a square on the flight Grin.

RedRosie · 02/02/2013 13:51

Nearly done Pitsey. Honest! Lost a day yesterday as we went up The Shard ... These are my hands (pic 13) in the Telegraph:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/picturegalleries/uknews/9842262/Boris-Johnson-opens-The-View-From-The-Shard-viewing-deck-in-London.html?frame=2468425

Only the quality papers for me.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 02/02/2013 14:33

Hands of a knitter those!

I'm going up the Shard tomorrow. Hooray!
