Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Pistey and Knotty
Thanks

Was knackered last night but thought I might manage a few rows on my square. Nope. One row. I just could not concentrate. That was at 9.30, so I MN'd for a bit and went to bed, then couldn't sleep. So my square is not progressing as fast as I'd like, but never mind, it will get there.

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 11/01/2013 12:24

Skoggy - he sounds good :) So how come you've been living in the mouldy place?

Crafting not going too well at the moment, pulled the first square out as I wasn't happy with it, haven't had time to day any since.

Trying to 'cure' bout of insomnia, was up all night last night, desperately fighting off sleep today, if I sit still long enough to knit a row I will fall asleep!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 11/01/2013 12:46

First square made! Lots of back and forth trying to get bobbles in the right place to produce a heart, but I've managed to produce a square of the right size and same number of stitches on every row for only the second time Blush

Had to finish of ds2's hat for the big freeze which apparently is coming but that's done now so I'll get back to my second square when the house work is done!

Hopefully I'll post late next week after I finish my night shifts.

The colours I bought are beautiful, not colours I would normally use, greens and bluey greys but they really are lovely tones. I do love DB wool!

ChippingIn the back staircase was a new addition to the flat before we moved in. We moved in May so the weather wasn't that damp. As time went on and the weather started to turn, the staircase got damp and formed lots of condensation which caused mould. Initially he had done something to remove the first lot but then it came back with a vengenance. Something has gone wrong with the building work he'd done and he now needs to fix it. :)

Just hopping on thread to say wool ordered from deramores (?) I think it was yesterday so it should be landing on someone's front door in the next couple of days-hopefully anyway.

really looking forwards to sitting down for a good old knit tomorrow. I have to confess I'm not that familiar with Lemon and was only aware of her loss through this thread, but MN has been an absolute comfort for me through less-difficult times and I want to do something positive to pay back the support I've had from MN. I will manage at least two squares during the weekend and will post as soon as possible.

you're all lovely and I'm really proud to be a MNer.

Theodora · 11/01/2013 15:25

I might be available for some gentle hooking together if I'm in the right area. Is it evening work or daytime meetings?
Oxfordshire or surrounding counties any good?

Theodora · 11/01/2013 15:26

Oh and two squares just posted Smile

Theodora · 11/01/2013 18:01

Oh and Pidj, huge congratulations on your baby ThanksThanks. Are you getting any sleep?Grin

cheesecheeseplease · 11/01/2013 18:24

One done one half way there, I've never knitted with such beautiful wool before Blush

PurplePidjin · 11/01/2013 18:50

Theodora, all the squares (120 or so) are sent to you to arrange, join and edge then Pistey organises a way to get it to the recipient. So you can do it in whatever time you have spare :)

Theodora · 11/01/2013 19:24

[gulp] Pidj, wow 120 squares to join sounds like a lot - I'm a very slow hooker so don't think I'm up to joining a whole blanket Hmm

[bows down in front of others' immense crochet expertise]

GlaikitFizzog · 11/01/2013 19:31

Theodora have you seen the woolly hugs website? www.woollyhugs.com/ all the photos on there are of completed blankets.

If you want to try hooking together squares there are the little hugs and angel hugs that individual squares are knitted/crocheted for. Pistey is the one in the know on those.

Snapespeare I didn't know lemon before this either, but that doesn't matter. We make the blankets for another to show love and comfort. So much more than just a pile of squares hooked together aren't they? MrsKwazii said hers made her feel 'loved and looked after' that's what it is about. Reaching out to another and hoping to give what comfort we can in very bleak times.

So can I just ask, how big are Angel Hugs? Because they look like one complete crocheted or knitted blanket to me, rather than hooked together from squares. They look like they're about a meter square but it's hard to tell from the pictures. When I really get in gear with all this, I'd love to make one.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/01/2013 20:11

The last two Angel Hugs were hooked as one piece, but we also have ones that are squares hooked together. If you look through the album, you will see different stylees.

Minimum size 24" square going up to 30" square, and yes please, we'd love to have you make one Xx Thank you Thanks

Angel Hug thread is here for when you are ready Smile
