Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Wool will be on the way to my crafter tomorrow ... So sorry for the delay. I'm sure their efforts will be better than mine as I've forgotten what to do!

If you are reading Lemontruffles, we are thinking of you.

Jacksmania · 11/01/2013 21:06

Thanks for the Angel Hugs link, now what are Little Hugs? Sorry for all the questions, I feel like I should be able to find the answer from the crafting threads but I'm on my phone mostly, so searching can be a bit challenging.

StopEatingThatMud · 11/01/2013 22:09

Gah I was so wanting to finish my first square tonight but I'm 1/2 an inch short all round, grr!

I've got a blinding headache coming on and have work in the morning so am going to have to call it a night even though I know another round or so of DC would do it. Very annoying!

Jacksmania · 11/01/2013 23:56

I see! Thanks Glaikit!

Simple squares are GOOD. Simple squares are ESSENTIAL.

Hopefully!

KnottyLocks · 12/01/2013 09:54

Hopefully?

They still are, Rosie Smile

RedRosie · 12/01/2013 10:39

That's good - having been away for a while I was worried that everyone's crafting skills have improved very much more than mine. Which remain, errr, basic.

Rosie's not much of a crafter
Her efforts are lumpy and hairy,
But her knitting at least causes laughter,
And her talents are best labelled "lairy"...

I've made a blue daffodil on a square which will be ready to send on Monday, will pm you Pistey

KnottyLocks · 12/01/2013 11:27

Good to see our Woolly Hugs poet back on the boards Smile

RedRosie · 12/01/2013 13:36

I'm sure that I'm more glad to be back than you are to see me! But I'm so pleased to be here and its lovely to be able to take part in this again, and you are all stars.

My skills are tragically limited, but I can knit and purl. I'll do a plain square, but additionally I might like to do a raised musical note/treble clef for this one ... Is Trib about, to point me at a possible pattern?

Also, I have done a sheep before (remember Basil Pitsey - Trib did me a super-simplified pattern?) so that's a possibility. What is the easiest way to do a two-colour (i.e. with the pattern/background being different shades) square, or is that too hard for the likes of me ...?

:)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/01/2013 17:48

I'm so glad our Woolly Hugs Poet Laureate (patent still pending) is back. Smile

Rosie I loved Basil, well I actually still do, and it would be marvellssimo if you'd make one for lemon, I'm sure she'd love it too. Thanks Now I think Fizzy might have the musical notes pattern, I shall ask her for you. Thanks

I have no idea about two colours, I am sorry, the best I can do with two is stripes

rubyrubyruby - Your square will be very precious however plain or patterned, because it will be knitted with thought, love, care and support for another, bless you for doing it Smile Thanks

WhoKnows I've seen your daff, and it is lovely, thank you so much, I shall PM you in two ticks. Thanks

I've done a harp. Just copied the pattern, which is cheating a bit, but she didn't answer my email and I wanted to get on with it. It is a fairly small harp, but it is definitely a harp. Now for the dragon.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/01/2013 17:52

Oh bless you Oma, the harp is something very significant to lemon so THANK YOU. X

Good luck with the dragon Smile

Thanks

I'm losing the fight with my dragon square, but Celtic knot is done.

musical note pattern for Rosie. Very simple, just knit and purl!

Pistey, can I ask was I in the batch of donor wool you sent at the beginning of the week, or was I matched with someone? It just I've not received anything yet if it was coming from you. :)

RedRosie · 12/01/2013 18:59

Glaikit you are - as ever - a gentlewoman, and I thank you. :)

I purchased wool today (for me, and for my hopefully-better-than-me crafter - IT'S IN THE POST MIDLANDS CRAFTER!) from a central London wool emporium. And while there I saw an absolute beginners lesson being taught by a (very patient) chap. Which was lovely to see. And got me to wondering - have we any contributors of the "other" gender? I should have asked him, but didn't want to interrupt ...

WednesdayNext · 12/01/2013 19:04

I had to undo my square last night as I dropped a stitch and the bugger ran right the way down my square. My talents were not up to retrieving it!!

Sigh. Starting again this eve!!

KnottyLocks · 12/01/2013 19:17

Dropped stitches are indeed a bugger

KnottyLocks · 12/01/2013 19:19

'Other' gender, Rosie?

Interesting

tribpot · 12/01/2013 19:22

Rosie, the easiest way of doing two colours (not counting stripes) is to do one shape in the middle of the square in a different colour, let's say a heart. You would need two balls of the main colour (not two whole balls - just two bits long enough to get the job done) and one of the contrast colour.

You knit along merrily in your main colour til you come to your first contrast stitch, you bring that stitch in as shown as the beginning of - go to 0:45 and ignore the mad things she's doing by holding the yarn in her left hand. Bring the new colour in, knit with it, then bring in the second ball of the main colour, same thing, and off you go again.

In the next row, you come back to your first stitch in the contrast colour (which in the case of a heart would normally be one stitch over from the one you did in the row below) and now all you need to do is pick up the contrast colour again, being sure to twist it with the main colour you're dropping, so as not to leave a gap. Best way to do this is to always pick it up from underneath the other colour ('old over new' is how we were taught it on my course) then off you go again.

I can make Basil into a two colour pattern but you'd be better off with a Team Heart I reckon?
