Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

TrazzleMISTLEtoes · 08/01/2013 16:04

Further to my PM, Pistey, I'm back from the hygienist [ouch] and have opened the packet. Wool is indeed safe and sound! And thanks for the, er, additional enclosure. And Joe says thanks for his hug.

TrazzleMISTLEtoes · 08/01/2013 16:05

Sorry and of course, thank you extremely incredibly much, lovely donor. You are wonderful. I hope to do your beautiful wool a bit of justice.

Otherworld · 08/01/2013 16:22

My donor wool arrived too! Big thanks to the donor! Pressure is on to do it justice...

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 08/01/2013 16:45

I ordered from AbitWoolly but they don't have the apple green DB which looks lovely so I may have placed another order with Deramores for that and a few other bits I always have trouble choosing colours so end up getting more wool than I planned.

I now have lots of lovely colours winging their way to me, hopefully won't be too long before I can get started.

I've not long learned to crochet and I feel honoured to be able to finally contribute to such a worthy project.

Keeping you in my thoughts LemonTruffles

Gah! One and a half sides to go and ds woke up! Still, means i can pop my granny-butterfly-thing pattern up here for you...

Row 5 of any square worked centre out in rounds.

Working from the first gap of the edge, away from the corner:

Ch2, tc, *ch2, dc

Ch 5, dc in next-but-one gap

Ch 5, turn, sl st in 1st ch

Ch 5, turn, dc in previous dc, 2 tc

Ch 1, work corner, ch 1

2 tc, repeat from *

Continue around, sl st to join

Tie a short piece of contrast yarn around all 3 lengths of chain, cut the ends off to 1/2" for antennae.

Next row, dc around (dc ch1 dc in corners) with 5 ch across the butterflies

Final row, tc around with 5 tc in each ch 5 gap

Voila, butch butterflies! Well, it is when worked in green (rows 1-3) cream (4-5) and blue (6-7) :o

Theodora · 08/01/2013 17:45

Thanks Skoggy Smile and glad your landlord has found you somewhere else Grin

Was feeling happy to be making some beautiful crochet, then felt desperately sad for Lemon - thinking of her x

WhereAreMyShoes · 08/01/2013 17:50

Wow Purple that's just a bunch
of letters to me Blush
My Granny taught me to crochet and knit and I've never actually followed a pattern before.
I'm going off a video on YouTube and hoping for the best!
Thank you to my donor, some lovely wool arrived today. I hope I can make a valuable contribution to the cause.

Thoughts are with you Lemon
And well done to Pistey for your fabulous organisation. x

PurplePidjin · 08/01/2013 18:16

I'm stuck on the sofa breast feeding and surfing from a tablet if you want talking through anything :)

GlaikitFizzog · 08/01/2013 18:20

Ooh, yes pidj can you talk me through the inner workings of the hadron collider and the impact on the world of discovering the god particle? Because to me, I think that would be easier to understand than that witchcraft crochet malarkey! :o

PurplePidjin · 08/01/2013 20:01

I've just posted one to Pistey's fb for her to post to woolly hugs if she wants but the light is rubbish and there are lots of pesky ends. I'll try for a better one in daylight tomorrow

Only when he's on the left!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 08/01/2013 20:07

My daughter can talk you through the hadron collider if you like Fizzy Grin

So lovely that so much woolly wool is with crafters, that really is smashing. Most of the wool arriving today is thanks to the donors of funds, another big thank you to them. Thanks

And we have more lovely donors to thank tonight. Either your donation has arrived safely with us, or your wool has arrived safely with your crafter. Either way we are enormously grateful to you, you are all stars. Thanks

Woo that's great :)
I'm going to root through my stash this evening to find the good stuff and get going on something. I may knit for a change, though it will probably be wobbly. I know that's ok though.
