Very sad news I'm afraid. Lemontruffles' husband died this week on New Year's Day after living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Such devastating news. Our hearts go out to her. In her own words, he was the love of her life.
Sad

We have offered to make a blanket for her, and are so pleased that she has said she would love one. She is clearly so very moved by our offer and has said she is astonished at the kindness of strangers. We will all be holding her hand and hope that she will feel the love and support from us all, and that the blanket will bring whatever comfort it can.

Lemontruffles writes so movingly on her thread about her beloved husband, and has shared many memories, bless her heart. her thread is HERE. You will not fail to be moved by the love and warmth of her posts about him.

So to the Woolly Hug, we would be very grateful for your help.

We will need crocheters, knitters and donors (of funds or wool) I will co ordinate and do admin, and Knotty (KnottyLocks) is here and will help you with any queries you may have.

So if you are able to join with us, please PM me, and also if you are offering to donate, or need a donor, I can help match you up.

Thank you so much.
Thanks

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (not the Baby cashmerino)
  • Rowan Cashsoft DK
  • Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
  • Artesano Superwash Merino DK.

Just from these yarns please as they are very similar and we know they can be combined for wash and wear.

4mm crochet hook or knitting needles
6 inch squares

The Colours
Lemontruffles has spoken so movingly about her husband's love for the countryside of North Wales, and to reflect that passion how she sees the blanket as a landscape, so :

Greens, darker purples, blues, silvers, cream.

If going for cream please use Debbie Bliss cashmerino DK 013
(Not bright colours for this please, and no pinks or lilacs, thank you)

Just sharing some of her words about him
He was Welsh and loved the countryside of North Wales especially. He loved walking. He loved going to the pub and having the biggest laugh he could. He had a fantastic sense of humour and he loved having fun. He was warm hearted, he had a spirit of pure generosity - though with a 'sticking point' stubborn streak! - he was no angel. He was very adventurous about life. He was a proper hippy in the 60s and 70s. He had an amazing memory for all sorts of things, and a very wide ranging and strange knowledge of very odd things. Such an interesting man. A man with endless and deep humanity towards all the people he met. He was very well loved. He had a deep maturity and wisdom about other people.

Oh, and music! Not male voice choirs! Rock and blues from the 60s and 70s, and the manic street preachers. He had great taste. Also photographs. He was always photographing things, all sorts of random things, all sorts of bits of nature, and landscapes. He loved his camera.

Suggestions for motifs

  • Any motifs of the natural world - trees, leaves, flowers, birds (esp crows )
  • Can anyone find a Welsh dragon design or a harp? We'd love to find these for her.
  • Anything to reflect he was a Welshman.
  • Music, photography related
  • We have an initial, could you PM me if this is something you'd like to do.

There are many relevant patterns for knitters and crocheters linked to from our website under Crafting

Reading her words gives us lots of motifs to think about for sure, but please don't feel daunted by these suggestions, we love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on our website. We also have a Facebook page MNWoollyHugs and are on Twitter @MNWoollyHugs. If you 'like' or 'follow' us you'll be updated on progress via your feed.

As always, we thank you so much for your support.
Thinking of lemontruffles Xx

Morning! Brew

Skoggy · 09/01/2013 10:47

Mornin' all! I trust everyone is well, or as well as they can be. :)

Made one of my squares yesterday with my lovely donor wool. Came out lovely! I love making squares with flowers on. Grin

Now, DD1 is watching, singing and dancing to Mr Bloom, DD2 is sleeping after having her jabs this morning and I have a bucket o'tea and a hook in my hand.

Have a good day!

EllenJaneisstillnotmyname · 09/01/2013 11:06

Hi all, I've completed my first square and it weighs 15g so hoping to complete 3 altogether. My tension is really tight so I've used a 5mm hook as it gives me a 6" square if I use a DK 6" pattern. I always have to use a larger hook or end up with tiny, lumpy squares. Blush

Morning droitwich!

HairyPotter · 09/01/2013 13:20

I have woolly wool! Wise Badger are fast. Grin I found a ball of db airforce in my stash yesterday so I had a go at the crow. It appears to have been on the gin though, it's leaning a tad to one side Blush

Think I'll look for something treey for the ball of apple. The tree of Valium terrifies me so something far more basic is needed.

Theodora · 09/01/2013 14:02

Have finished my first square in lovely DB airforce and it is 6" at the corners and a bit less when measured across the middle. Is this ok because I can gently stretch it to make the middle 6"? I don't think I should do another round as it'll be too big then Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 14:09

Theodora If it happily stretches to six inches then it is absolutely fine, thank you.

Lunchtime.

Thanks Vajazz - I'll have the wine Smile

OP posts:
MrsPennyapple · 09/01/2013 14:09

I'd leave it Theo, it'll stretch out when it's joined to other squares.

Ellen I quite often go down a hook size, as my crochet comes out fairly loose and sometimes I like it a bit tighter.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 14:10

Good luck with the knitting lovely RubyRubyRuby Maybe one of these might help? Wine But arse for the shop, typical!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/01/2013 14:12

My experience with Wise Badger has always been fabulous I must say, I would really recommend them.

I sympathise with that crow, when I'm on the gin, I also lean to one side Smile

Thanks everyone, Thanks

I've received some beautiful DB dark purple wool today, thank you ever so much to my donor!! :)

Will crack on with the hooking from Friday night, I'm working the next couple of evenings and non napping 19mo DD isn't conducive to crocheting during the day if I want to do my beautiful wool justice!

Theodora · 09/01/2013 14:25

Thanks so much for the advice. Have just discovered I can get these on my phone - so ThanksThanksThanksThanks Grin

MinnieBar · 09/01/2013 14:41

Right, I picked up my knitting needles for the first time in aaaages, and despite having to double-check how to cast on Hmm I've already done half a square today [proud].

I have a request though blanketeers. Some time ago I had some left-over wool and thought I'd finish it off on a square. Predictably, I ran out in the final section and even worse, DB have blardy well stopped making it, so I can't even buy a ball to finish it off.

It's here - does anyone have any left over hot pink? I have enough of the coldlilac, but just need a smidge of hot pink to finish it off. I know it's the wrong colours for this blanket, but it could be a spare for the future.

Can anyone help out, to save me having to unpick it all? Thanks

MinnieBar · 09/01/2013 14:42

Oops, took a pic of the reverse side. Looks much nicer from the front Grin

MinnieBar · 09/01/2013 15:08

Oh bolleaux. I've just realised, that even if someone had some leftover wool in that shade that there's no point me finishing it off is there, because as it's now discontinued there wouldn't be any other squares in the same colour, and it would stand out like the proverbial sore thumb.
Boo, hiss....
