Following on from our previous support thread please check in here if there's any help, particularly (but not exclusively) knitting help, you need for the squares for 3girlies, who sadly lost her beloved 6-year-old dd Flora recently.

The details of the blanket project are here and it directs you to the Crafting Guide on Woolly Hugs, with specific sections for crocheters and knitters. I am still maintaining the original document mostly because I haven't got around to separating out the stuff that's already on Woolly Hugs now from the newer suggestions we've had in the last few weeks. So please, by all means do send me suggestions for new patterns or ideas.

For those of you on Ravelry and participating in the Ravellenic games, I think squares could be entered under a number of categories such as balance beads, doubleknit boxing, lace longjump among possibly some others.

Somersaults, make a chain 6" long, then add an extra 1 for dc or 2 for tc for turning. I get about 4sts to the inch in this wool on a 4mm hook, so 24+1. Then keep going for however many rows is 6" :o

Pistey, I'll be bringing my hooks with me if you have questions. You wanted a star pattern, too, didn't you?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/08/2012 08:14

Found a star, but wasn't very pointy, was this one here This was for the crochet doubles event that in the end sore mummy and I won gold in, trib said so Grin I decided to leave the middle empty on that one. But a star would be great, ta X

Just a bit! He is huge though! Dh is tall, but he must be 6'6 easily!

Who is he? Assuming by a process of elimination that Glaikit isn't the huge guy on the right Wink

Shock Trib that my dear is Ashley banjo, dance man extraordinaire! Leader of Britians got talent winners beaters of subo Diversity!

His ashleyness of banjo was performing at a gig my choir were singing at!

Oh right, I have heard of Diversity and I had heard of Ashley Banjo because Marian Keyes tweets about him. So far so good. Also I know who Subo is! However, unless he's been on Strictly (which I assume he would be rather good at) he is not a celebrity in my house.

ooh get you glaikit Envy what a great photo!
Righto - I'm going to give myself tonight off as my eyes and brain aren't working properly but will crack on with 3girlies square tomorrow.
I weighed my squares just posted and they were about 19/20g each. I have 12g of each pink left from my donor so hoping to do one striped square.
If you'd like me to do some more squares ( and I'm more than happy to ) could I ask very nicely for a lovely donor pretty please Smile

Evening :)

This evening I shall mostly be trying to master crocheting a square that isn't a granny square seeing as though totally unromantic DH doesn't want to do anything for our anniversary. The flowers I've tried have come out fine but trying to straight crochet in single, double or triple is proving to be trickier and I'm not surer why yet. I might stick to knitting when my donor wool arrives and just add some pretty crocheted flowers on at the end. Although I did like the look of the star you posted Pistey. Maybe I'll give one of those a whirl. I think I need one to one crochet lessons wrt the straight crocheting rathe than video tutorials because then I can show and ask questions as I'm going along. I want to make some of those gorgeous fancy crochet squares with all kinds of pretty things in and on but I think I'm trying to run before I can walk!

Hi all, hoping for some help.

I've got my wool ( Thanks to my donor) and I was hoping to knit the letters using the guides on the Wooly Hugs website. I'm starting with the letter L - has anyone modified this so that it's the right size square? How would I go about doing it?

Thanks

Also (I told you I was a novice!) what does it mean by "don't block the squares"? Should I cast off as usual?

Report
Somersaults · 07/08/2012 11:49

I haven't looked at the pattern so can't help with the size query, but you should cast off as usual and sew the ends in. Blocking is where you pin your work out and steam/press them. Don't do this part!

I've found that I need 33 stitches to make my squares six inches across so could you knock an even number of stitches off each side of the letter pattern to get to 33? I'm not sure how many rows you need in total and I posted my previous squares yesterday so I can't even count the rows on my finished ones. Someone else will be able to suggest about how many rows you need altogether I'm sure.

Okay so the L pattern calls for 36 stitches. This is probably close enough to what you need to not be worth modifying, AfternoonDelight, but you'll need to knit a few rows (ideally 10) and then measure to see what your gauge is like with this yarn and needle size. Have a quick look at the section entitled How Many Stitches is 6"?.

AfternoonDelight I made the L earlier this week (for another blanket I'm making for one of my DCs) following the instructions and using 36 stitches. I'm using different wool (but still DK and 4mm needles) and it looks the right size (I don't have a tape measure with me on holiday, but I've also done some granny squares and the L has come out the same size as them).

Neither Thanks for that. I'm going to start it later on - I'll let everyone know how I get on Smile
