Oh no! The previous thread has become full and suddenly we need a new one, with no way of linking old to new. I hope people will find this one. :)

This is a continuation of our thread supporting MNers creating blanket squares for Woolly Hugs. All are welcome.

Ophelia, you're on - I've put you above the line where 'here be dragons' as otherwise it's only DAISY and me representing the North of England, with Formerly technically on the right latitude but in another country Grin If you live just south of the line, I'm moving the line down!

I'm surprised to hear Chester is short on wool shops, I would have thought it'd have a few naice places.

I'm off today to my 'knitting with colour' workshop so I am insanely excited to learn how I've been doing it wrong all this time.

Rosie, i need a pome about fog please!

Dances, you need a jamjar with a hole in the lid for your wool...

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 21/06/2012 07:33

Oooooo - what a good idea

Only have empty wine bottles, and wool doesn't fit in. Grin Will buy coffee, drink it, and use empty jar.

KnottyLocks · 21/06/2012 07:40

Morning all Smile

KnottyLocks · 21/06/2012 07:41

Awww, welcome to the world Rosalie Smile

PurplePidjin · 21/06/2012 07:41

I suggest posh naice jam would be easier - croissants for breakfast for a week :o

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 21/06/2012 09:46

Isn't that too small?

Serious knitting question from a rank amateur - I assume these squares are meant to look pleasant front and back, so in order to make the two bottom points of a star, do I use two separate bits of wool of the same colour to avoid the bit of yarn going across the background colour between the points? (I hope that makes sense)

prettybird · 21/06/2012 10:34

Don't worry about the back - these are not two sided blankets. You can either carry the wool across the back (Fair isle method) or you can start a new (small) ball of wool for each of the colour changes - but you need to be sure to twist/wrap the "new" colour around the old one each time you change it otherwise you'll get holes (my big fat knitting book has guidance about twisting on knit rows for right slanting colour changes and on purl rows for left slanting changes and on both for vertical colour changes but if you twist/wrap as much as possible, then you won't go far wrong). This is called Intarsia. The down-side of it is that you have lots of pesky ends to sew in.

PurplePidjin · 21/06/2012 10:45

Right, it's been a while since i worked from a full ball, so I've experimented with my new donor one!

Bonne Maman jar, too small
Dolmio jar, too small
Waitrose French Onion Soup plastic pot, just about
1l ice cream or butter tub, perfect (but you can't see how much is left)
Carte D'Or tub, perfect

Conclusion: eat more Carte D'Or ice cream...

Poem on the occasion of grey days in June

Its Thursday not Friday - that's why I'm complaining
Along with the fact that its raining and raining

I spend whole days in meetings, just talking and sitting,
That's talking and sitting - not knitting!

Pidge is fogged up, poor thing, poor her
The world indistinct, the view a blur

Where is the sun? Oh woe is me
The summer days of sand and sea?

The only thing that keeps us snug
In this horrible weather is a woolly hug!

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 21/06/2012 11:08

I like your thinking Pidge!

Rosie - can you add a verse about Dances who is about to embark on a 4 day festival experience in this weather? She is especially nervous about the loos.

PurplePidjin · 21/06/2012 11:15

Yay! Thanks

RedRosie · 21/06/2012 11:18

Dances - afraid of loos and mud?
There's always the chance of a biblical flood!

:)

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 21/06/2012 11:28

Grin Thanks

but maybe I can float to safety on a portaloo
and have a chance to finish my knitting then too

tribpot · 21/06/2012 12:57

Sorry Minnie I've been off conducting the business of the nation (have a big presentation next week that I am frankly pooping my pants over) and preparing for ds' birthday tomorrow.

Now that you are a bobble-mistress, are you wanting a bash at the apple tree? It sounds like it might be a bit wide with all its branches on, so could be trimmed down a bit?

Love the poem Rosie Smile
Love eating more Carte D'Or ice cream Grin

I have yet to start my square, but today may be the day.

Glaikit · 21/06/2012 14:13

Today is my Friday! Whoop.

Although I've just walked home from the childminders in the pouring rain because ds was sleeping. Only to get home for neighbour to toot horn for 10 seconds just as I'm bumping the buggy in th front door, because someone was parked in their space. Even though there are no other cars parked in the parking area. They wake ds, I lose it slightly and tell them to park in our space as its obviously a visitor somewhere who doesn't know who parks where, but if they toot their horn again I may not be responsible for my actions.

Anyway, I've managed to settle ds again, so I should have an hour or so of knitting to calm me down.

Fancy writing a poem about that Rosie?? :)

PurplePidjin · 21/06/2012 14:15

I have yet to start mine too, Pistey Blush Are they going to Knotty or coming to me?

OhDoAdmitMrsDeVere · 21/06/2012 14:19

So sorry I cant join in with the new blanket Sad
I am supposed to be doing this stupid OU course and I keep getting behind.
How sad we need another one so soon.

I have been inspired by the beautiful squares and want to try something different next time. Unfortunately I know we will need another one.

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 21/06/2012 14:36

I'll give it a bash Glaikit...

Wake Glaikit's DS with your horn
You will face her wrath and scorn
mercifully he's still sleeping a bit
giving Glaikit time to knit

I'm not as good as Rosie, my metre and rhythm are rubbish. Perhaps I should stop horning in Wink

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/06/2012 14:37

Please MrsDV, no apologies are needed X

It is desperately sad that another one is needed so soon, and you are right about the ones to come Sad But good luck with the course [fourleafedcloveremoticon]

RatherBeOnThePiste · 21/06/2012 15:26

I have started! A poem to recognise this occasion would be nice....

Sorry Pidj - Matilda's squares are going to Knots, in fact some super speedy squares have arrived already

MinnieBar · 21/06/2012 16:03

Trib I was genuinely only joking! The apple tree can wait. For future reference, 35 stitches on 3.5mm needles generally comes out at 6" for me (unless it's something quite close knit like the daisy stitch, where 37 stitches on 4mm needles came out at 5" Confused) so it'd 'only' need to lose 5 stitches. I think.

Might have a go at these owls, but without the border so they come out at 6". I like owls. And cabling...

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 21/06/2012 16:12

the time limit will soon be gone,
but fear not Pistey's casting on

PurplePidjin · 21/06/2012 16:26

No worries, just checking what to expect! Still need to find time for that Brew :)
