Oh no! The previous thread has become full and suddenly we need a new one, with no way of linking old to new. I hope people will find this one. :)

This is a continuation of our thread supporting MNers creating blanket squares for Woolly Hugs. All are welcome.

Ophelia, you're on - I've put you above the line where 'here be dragons' as otherwise it's only DAISY and me representing the North of England, with Formerly technically on the right latitude but in another country Grin If you live just south of the line, I'm moving the line down!

I'm surprised to hear Chester is short on wool shops, I would have thought it'd have a few naice places.

I'm off today to my 'knitting with colour' workshop so I am insanely excited to learn how I've been doing it wrong all this time.

Afternoon, lovelies Smile

Today's woolly arrivals have been posted on Matilda's thread. Thanks

Glaikit · 21/06/2012 17:06

Thank you dances! Not much knitting done this afternoon if I'm honest, but I have high hope for tomorrow!

RedRosie · 21/06/2012 17:41

Are my poems the best poems?

Do say yes ... It has been a rubbish week and it would be nice to hear something positive even if its not true

PurplePidjin · 21/06/2012 17:47

Yes

Glaikit · 21/06/2012 20:23

Of course Rosie! You are the woolly hugs poet laureate (patent pending).

Although I do appreciate dances efforts, you're my favourite!!

tribpot · 21/06/2012 20:41

Glaikit, that's not "you're my favourite" in the style of Brucie on Strictly Come Dancing is it?

Glaikit · 21/06/2012 21:09

Well I am a big chinned octogenarian, so you could say that!

prettybird · 21/06/2012 21:17

RedRosie - you write the best poems SmileSmileThanksThanks

I have just finished my second brioche stitch square. Only one noticeable mistake. I did it in light blue and mid blue, which creates a lovely effect with the deep brioche ribbing. It's double-sided (with the mistake showing more on one side) so knotty will be able to decide if she wants the predominately pale blue or the predominately mid blue effect side.

I'll take picture tomorrow when the light is better.

My poems are weak efforts compared to the mastery of rosie!
I feel a small offering coming on though...

My squares have been sent
Knotty got them today
But DS wants to knit
So hip, hip, hooray!

He is 8 years old
And has learnt the knit stitch
Tomorrow is purl
So he will know which is which

It wasn't good enough for triple posting! D**m tablet!

TwoJackRussellsandababy · 21/06/2012 21:24

Evening all, I've done two squares and started on a third but it's a bit pants so might frog it...

That's probably going to be my lot this time, am off to Woolfest tomorrow and a wee bit of family time at Centreparcs squishing my new wooly purchases Grin

Will post my squares off when I get back home next week.

tribpot · 21/06/2012 22:47

droitwich - triple, make that a sextuple, but good effort. And well done ds! It is my ds' 7th birthday tomorrow (7!) and I am planning to offer 'learn to knit' as an alternative to 'learn to play Lego Batman on the Wii'. I'm not expecting many takers but ds has invited one of the girls from his class round as well as some boys and I am conscious (a) of having no idea what girls like to play with and (b) not wanting to reinforce gender stereotypes by assuming it isn't pirates/Lego/Batman yet (c) wanting to have something in reserve just in case! Naturally I will make this offer open to all.

So far the top suggestion has been 'get some nail varnish' but this seems fraught with risk to me - what if the parents (as I probably would) object to such things? Ds hates face paint with a passion (always has) so that's out too. I have another girl in the class on standby to come round for emergency girl-support if required!

DS has been watching my knitting with interest for a while and told me that in year 4 they either learn knitting or sewing (he couldn't remember which). He asked me to teach him tonight so I found a big pair of needles (size 10 but short) and some cheap wool I had around, cast on for him and off he went. Only 1 hole so far and he gained an extra stitch from somewhere but he is half wsy through a square [proud mum emoticon]

tribpot · 21/06/2012 23:04

Right, so the challenge is on to have ds doing the bloody brioche before year 4! Wink

I have been trying to learn continental knitting from YouTube as I have a 'Team Heart' blanket to do and I can see that if I can master it it will be so much quicker to do. Unfortunately my conclusion is that without intervention at my local yarn shop I cannot master it, I just can't tension the yarn with my left hand. So it just flops about all over the place, it is most distressing.

Morning Brew

I had to frog nearly two full rounds of a granny square last night as I'd made a mistake in a corner But the frogging did make me smile.

That is a good thing about crochet, when I've made a mistake, I can go back and sort it out, had that been knitting I'd have had to bag the whole thing and restart from scratch. [crochetconvertemoticon]

Off to PMs then off to work, back at lunchtime, have a good morning all Thanks

GreatestGatsby · 22/06/2012 08:27

Right. Got the wool! Wish me luck embarking on a plain stockinette square in Debbie Bliss Apple! (Please correct me if I'm wrong- stockinette is knit one row purl one row, right?). I'm
Not actually starting today, as very unfortunately I have to work.

I'm going to have to speed up my fingers! My current knitting project is the 'five hour baby jumper' for a newborn. The child it was intended for is 10 months old now! Fingers crossed I can manage a simple square without having to undo it 47 times.

MinnieBar · 22/06/2012 09:27

Happy Birthday Tribboy! Hope he has a lovely day, a great party, and that Trib still has the will to live knit by the end of it?

SoupDragon · 22/06/2012 09:28

Gatsby, simple is good, deadlines are flexible mistakes are fine... it's the effort and love that counts!

Glaikit · 22/06/2012 10:36

Party sounds like hell fun Trib! Why only one girl though? Is she special to your ds?? Hope he has a great day.

Back to knitting chat. My bind off is too tight, making my log cabin blanket a bit tricky when picking up from the bind off side. Any suggestions? Even when I try to do it loosely it's still tight.

prettybird · 22/06/2012 11:14

Glaikit - I have that problem too. One of the ways I've dealt with it is to use a crochet hook rather than a needle to do the cast-off. It gives you more control over the tension of the cast-off stitches.
