Oh no! The previous thread has become full and suddenly we need a new one, with no way of linking old to new. I hope people will find this one. :)

This is a continuation of our thread supporting MNers creating blanket squares for Woolly Hugs. All are welcome.

Ophelia, you're on - I've put you above the line where 'here be dragons' as otherwise it's only DAISY and me representing the North of England, with Formerly technically on the right latitude but in another country Grin If you live just south of the line, I'm moving the line down!

I'm surprised to hear Chester is short on wool shops, I would have thought it'd have a few naice places.

I'm off today to my 'knitting with colour' workshop so I am insanely excited to learn how I've been doing it wrong all this time.

Sorry - having supper at my dad's. Yes, you are supposed to take it off the heat to beat it. I'll add that bit to the recipe annotations for numpties

Hope it worked ok.

Made a batch this morning for the Minis' rugby as we had a team visiting. 'Twas a vary good batch! Smile

prettybird · 17/06/2012 20:59

...and yes, it is very good for the bingo wings Wink

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 21:12

Cheerios just don't seem to be working now you've mentioned tablet Sad

I'm making it in poundstretcher Wizz Aran which makes a lovely tiedye effect when crocheted!

Glaikit · 17/06/2012 21:27

A Glaikit numpty! Sounds like me! I just panicked, there I was, gently stirring my molten sugar mixture, timer ticking down, when I glanced back at the recipe and realise I did actually know for sure if it should stay on the heat. I am a clever person, but in the heat of the moment, I lost all common sense!

And it did work, cooling nicely in the kitchen! Although I had to boil it a bit longer as it was still really pale at 15 minutes. I'll know for next time I can increase the heat a bit more. Foolproof!

Pidj I'll send you some virtually!

PurplePidjin · 17/06/2012 21:51

Omf gromf nyomf

I made the back of a cardi :o

prettybird · 17/06/2012 22:08

Glaikit - I do mention in the recipe that you can boil it at a moderate rolling boil. The first many few times I did it, I was too cautious about how fast I boiled it and it took over 20 minutes to get to "soft ball" stage. As you get more confident, you can boil it faster (although you need to be careful about stirring constantly) - I've got it down to 14 minutes Smile

Have the wee crystals developed in the cooling tablet? I always breath a sigh of relief when I see them forming in the tin.

Glaikit · 17/06/2012 22:19

I'm ashamed to admit I wasn't 100% sure what a moderate boil was. Im beginning to realise the sucess of this may be more a fluke than actual skill on my part. my tin was a bit big but it sort of pooled in one big blob so I managed to chivvy it and popped a palette knife across it like a mini dam!

The test is if I can do it again!

prettybird · 17/06/2012 22:35

On my littlest gas ring (6 ring hob) with a Le Creuset cast iron casserole (which means it retains heat), the gas is probably about 3/4 - so it is actually bubbling quite fast (it might start catching, in which case stir faster Grin and/or reduce the heat slightly.

If you "get" it consistently in fewer than 13 attempts you are reaping the benefit of my failures doing better than me Wink

prettybird · 17/06/2012 22:37

I have a nice Swiss roll tin which is just the right size. You can sort of see it in my Flickr stream.

RedRosie · 18/06/2012 08:04

Morning all ...

Its raining in this here London.

Trib: I've nearly finished my boat on 3.5mm needles, and I think it may come up - roughly - the right size.

But as Pitsey says, there are many different sizes of 6 inch square ...

:)

PurplePidjin · 18/06/2012 08:31

Sunny at the moment down here, and the BBC just said it should be like this all day...

My leg's still dodgy so sofa and crochet it is!

DancesWithWoolsEnPointe · 18/06/2012 12:29

Greetings - life has been getting in the way of MN, and knitting, recently - poor form, I know. But just checking into the thread, and a quick wave (unless anyone wants a windmill bag update Grin)

prettybird · 18/06/2012 12:58

Have an admission to make: I made that Icelandic jumper just after having re-started knitting following a gap of 20+ years and my tension was still a bit tight and I didn't do a tension rest piece so the jumper ended up being a bit neat on me and I need to lose some weight before I can wear it BlushBlush

TwoJackRussellsandababy · 18/06/2012 13:59

It's loverly though, was very impressed!

Is anyone going to Woolfest? I'm getting indecently over excited about it now - squee!!!

Glaikit · 18/06/2012 13:59

Woolfest? Linky please?

MinnieBar · 18/06/2012 14:04

Right. It's a new week.
Trib are you ready for this blanket's MinnieBar challenge?! Wink

I was wondering if just the tree part of this would work. But I'm not clear how big it'll come up (when you download the pattern I think it's saying it's 40 stitches across for just the tree bit). And, er, I still don't know how to do a bobble. (Do you really knit five stitches from one stitch or am I reading it wrong?)

But how hard can it be, right? Right...?

tribpot · 18/06/2012 14:15

Glaikit Wink

I'm not going to Woolfest cos it clashes with ds' birthday / the school fair, plus I would have to remortgage the house.

Minnie - groan, another bloody tree. It looks as if it might be a bit wide from the pic, but I'll download the pattern later. You can knit five together, I think the lotus stitch has something similar.

OP posts:
prettybird · 18/06/2012 14:17

The bobble one I did in green (think it's on my profile) was knitting three times into one stitch. As they were quite small bobbles, I think it is perfectly feasible that your pattern says five Smile.

Uses up a lot of wool!Grin

TwoJackRussellsandababy · 18/06/2012 14:21

Glakit,

Woolfest linky for you - Woolfest website

I am going to spend A LOT of money on Friday oh yes!!! Anyone have yarn squishing requests, I'm your gal Grin

Glaikit · 18/06/2012 14:47

Trib [grumpyface] I know I could have done that, but I have a poorly ds asleep on me and my dog ate my homework and my sister has runned away and my cousins aunties sister in laws chicken coup blew over and and and < runs out of excuses>

It would be far to dangerous for me to go to such a fest. I have too much wool already, dh took in another delivery last week and asked when I was intending using it all.

I've just read through my cabin blanket pattern ad there is an intarsia bit in a few panels time. I have googled Trib but I'm still confused.

tribpot · 18/06/2012 15:02

Right fortunately Glaikit I am now an expert in intarsia after Saturday! Key thing is it involves creating lots of small balls of yarn. That's basically all you need to know.

Does seem weird that there would be such a thing in a log cabin blanket though - I thought the idea was you just knitted a bit at right angles to the bit you'd done previously, and so on and so on and so on.

OP posts:
MinnieBar · 18/06/2012 15:07

But I have green wool Trib and trees are on The List? so it seemed to make sense. I like trees. Have I put you off for life after the last one?!

(Obviously you don't have to take up my challenge? Grin )

tribpot · 18/06/2012 15:18

Ha Minnie you know perfectly well no mere knitted tree shall defeat me. Looking at the pattern now.

VeronicaSpeedwell · 18/06/2012 15:31

Hello all,

I'm a long time knitter, but new to the blankets. I'd really like to knit a square for Matilda if you still need them. If so, I'll gladly read back to get the instructions.

Glaikit · 18/06/2012 15:33

Block 9 Trib here I could just do that block all one colour I suppose. The you tube videos I've found are all about small bits of colour in a bigger block. This looks like you knit halfway along the row, then change colours.
