Oh no! The previous thread has become full and suddenly we need a new one, with no way of linking old to new. I hope people will find this one. :)

This is a continuation of our thread supporting MNers creating blanket squares for Woolly Hugs. All are welcome.

Ophelia, you're on - I've put you above the line where 'here be dragons' as otherwise it's only DAISY and me representing the North of England, with Formerly technically on the right latitude but in another country Grin If you live just south of the line, I'm moving the line down!

I'm surprised to hear Chester is short on wool shops, I would have thought it'd have a few naice places.

I'm off today to my 'knitting with colour' workshop so I am insanely excited to learn how I've been doing it wrong all this time.

Hmm, I think my moss stitch star has come out a bit small. Could it be my new bamboo needles? They are 'clingier' than the metal I swatched on. A schoolgirl error!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/06/2012 13:04

Hello there Rosie, sorry to hear you may have a grim week coming, that doesn't sound good, hope it turns out to be not so bad Smile

And lovely Veronica, you are in the right place to ask, but I'm afraid I can't help you, I am the most basic knitter and have only ever used those very cheap skiddy metal needles. Someone will come along who can help, I'm sure. When you say a bit small, if it can stretch to 6 inches then it is fine for us. Have a see. Moss star stitch is lovely though, really snuggly.

Rightyho, off to do some gardening whilst the going is good. Sunny at the mo, but black threatening clouds all around.

RedRosie · 24/06/2012 14:25

Hey Pitsey ... Nice to see you.

Squares on my profile and I'll post the during the week ... I think they are going to Knotty this time and that I already have the address?

I will leave it closer to the posting date as I may replace the boat (not right) with something else if I can find time.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 24/06/2012 15:34

Yes, tis to Knots, Rosie, I think you have the address, I might PM you anyway, lovely square, and I had a quick look at Pru whilst I was there Smile

I have a technical question. Wine

When the blankets come together, how much of the edge of a square is lost in the seam? I'm just thinking rounds of a granny and colours.

Pouring at the mo, gardening on hold, so trying to finish my first square for Matilda.

KnottyLocks · 24/06/2012 17:37

HellooooGrin

Next to nothing lost from a granny when hooking together. We'll crochet through the top of the stitches on the last round.

Pleiades45 · 24/06/2012 22:34

Many thanks for the link, only just logging in, there's been a lot of gardening done this weekend in between the rain.

prettybird · 24/06/2012 23:50

Am currently attempting the Apple Tree Blanket pattern that Minniebar linked to earlier. By my calculations, you can do the full pattern because of the way that the cabling pulls in the stitches. Am up to row 30 and so far so good Smile - but haven't got to the bobbles apples yet Wink

Will let you know how I get on!! Grin

Jules146 · 25/06/2012 10:11

Does anyone know if there are 'written' instructions for the crochet letters on the Google Doc? I can find the diagram but not written instructions and I am not very good at following the diagrams Blush but they look really good and I would love to give them a try!! If anyone could help I would really appreciate it!!

FormerlyTitledUntidy · 25/06/2012 10:57

Jules, what letter do you want to do? I can take a look at it for you?
See the for CYCA document for deciphering patterns :)

MinnieBar · 25/06/2012 11:14

Oh that's good news that there's no translating/tweaking needed Prettybird - if it's a success I'll give it a go for the next one.

I've now got three colours left and not enough for a full square from any - stripes it is, I think?!

prettybird · 25/06/2012 11:54

The main challenge I've got is working from a chart for knitting (don't mind doing it for colours but have never done it before for the actual stitches).

Actually, even printing of the chart was a challenge: the pattern is a PDF which has the chart impossibly small for my ageing eyes so I had to zoom in on the chart and then do a "print screen". Hmm

prettybird · 26/06/2012 13:39

Finished the apple tree really pleased with how it turned outSmile. My 2nd effort at brioche stitch is also on there.

My advice is to cast on 33 and then work out the middle of the chart and work from there (13 stitches on one side of the trunk and 14 on the other). I did three rows of stocking stitch before starting the tree trunk and then 11 rows of trunk - next time I'd do 2 rows bases and 10 rows of trunk, to allow an extra row at the top. The other thing you need to watch out for is the decreases near the top of the tree - because they're outwith the centre bit of the pattern you're following, you might miss them.

The other thing I'd advise is to use a lighter colour than the dark forest green I was using - as it made it difficult for me to check where in the pattern I was Blush

tribpot · 26/06/2012 15:54

That's really good, bird!

MinnieBar · 26/06/2012 16:17

It's great - bagsie it for the future...!

prettybird · 26/06/2012 16:34

Minniebar - you should definitely take the credit - after all, I stole your pattern was only giving your pattern a test run! Grin

I'd recommend doing it in a pale green - think it would look really good and it would show off the patterning nicely.

Glaikit · 26/06/2012 19:11

I am now fully up to speed on bodkins! Awww with their fluffy tummies!

Can I boast please. Ds walked outside today for the first time! He even had shoes on, which he hates and tried to pull off with his teeth. I'm so proud!

Squares posted pistey. And my log cabin blanket is taking shape! I've kind of gone off piste with the pattern, but will carry on until a reasonable size has been achieved. My pattern says to edge it go to page 75, but I can't see page 75 unless I buy the book < cheapskate > can anyone suggest a nice neat edging? I was thinking the icord bind off from the windmill bag would be nice but I don't know of it would work with picking up stitches??

tribpot · 26/06/2012 19:27

Glaikit - for a blanket, I'm planning to do this for the one I'm knitting now.

RatherBeABodkinsBobbleHat · 26/06/2012 19:39

and bless Small Glaikit - how cute!! You be proud, tis luvverly Smile

GreatestGatsby · 27/06/2012 08:36

So exciting that everything's coming together! All your complicated patterns sound lovely! The apple tree's fantastic! :)

If hypothetically one's square had come out a little bit wide (say 6.5") would it be better for the square to be actually square (say 6.5" x 6.5") or rectangular (6" x 6.5")? Also, it's quite curly as I didn't put a border on it- does that matter?

I'm so excited about posting it off! Am going to try to do a second one but I'm not sure it won't go horribly wrong and take longer than three days. I'll try though!

GreatestGatsby · 27/06/2012 08:37

So many exclamation marks! Can you tell I'm excited to be involved in such a lovely project?

prettybird · 27/06/2012 08:40

Don't worry about the slight variation in size - the hookers have coped with worse will cope Smile

The curling is normal - that gets pulled out when the squares get hooked together and the sheer weight of the whole thing takes over.

GreatestGatsby · 27/06/2012 08:50

Perfect- I'll add another couple of rows this evening then- maybe it will help to balance out another smaller square. :)

Glaikit · 27/06/2012 14:20

Thanks for the vid trib! There will be no stopping me now!

I just paid a visit to Hobbycraft during my lunch and they have our Sublime in stock, so I bought a couple of balls for my stash, oops! They also had some other wool down to 99p, so 4 balls on that went in the basket too! Double oops. I'm going to need a bigger hide all knitting related purchases from DH box wool box!
