Blanket for Matildawormwood: Sign up thread for crafters and donors.

We recently heard the devastating news that Matildawormwood's beautiful baby son, Daniel, was born sleeping.
Matilda's thread is here. Our thoughts are with Daniel and Matilda?s family.

We have offered to make a blanket and Matilda is very touched that people would do this for their family. We hope that the blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters and crocheters. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.
At the moment there is quite a lot of wool still in circulation because of the current blanket projects. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool.

One ball should make at least 2 x 6' squares.
If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

We are also introducing two new yarns:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

The Colours:

Blues, greens and cream.

Ideas for squares:

The initials D and N

Motifs: Stars, trees, birds, hearts, snowdrops, sailing boats.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support. Thanks Thanks Thanks

I'll do my best to do some squares for this - such a sad thing to have happened

Have PM'ed

JulesJules · 11/06/2012 09:16

Signing in.

How terribly sad.

hairypotter · 11/06/2012 09:17

I'm going to try and knit a square this time. Will pop into town for wool and knitting needles and give it a bash. I haven't knitted since I was about 10 so it will be v v basic. Grin

I know what wool to try and get but what about needles? Do they need to be a particular size?

If I cant get the stuff today, then I can donate wool again to someone more competent and maybe start practicing in case we need another one in the future Sad

Will let you know later today how I got on.

So so sad we need another one so soon.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 09:22

hairypotter - I will PM you, but you want 4mm needles.

It really will come back to you, tis like riding a bike Smile and we'd love to have you as a crafter Thanks

There is no great rush, even if you can't get the stuff this week, you have plenty of time.

Thanks Jules, KNT and Whore, lovely to have you on board again X

tribpot · 11/06/2012 09:24

hairy - 4mm needles are what you want. You shouldn't have any difficulty finding them as they are the default needle size for a lot of knitting. In fact the needles will be easier to find than the yarn, I would think.

I will start a support thread specifically for this blanket but feel free to jump on to the existing one, although we are mostly talking bollocks nonsense we are very friendly! If you want any tips on getting started, have a read of the guide that should be going on to Woolly Hugs soon. If you want to just have a practice for next time, bobkate was in the same situation and I posted some ideas on her thread.

NessaRose · 11/06/2012 09:44

Signing in. Pistey I have PM'ed you.
So sad that another blanket is needed so soon.

PurplePidjin · 11/06/2012 09:57

Carrying on from Trib's knitting support, we also have one for the crocheters - feel free to jump on board

Thanks

That boat is so cuuuute Pidj Grin

hairypotter · 11/06/2012 12:13

No wool to be had in town, have ordered a couple of balls from Black Sheep and mentioned mumsnets woolly hugs. I would rather give them this business this time because of their generosity. No more cumberpatch for me!

Bought needles and dd2 has a scabby ball of wool someone so I'm going to find it and start practicing.

Wish me luck Grin

KnottyLocks · 11/06/2012 12:18

Go, Hairy! Grin

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 12:20

Proud of you Hairy. Good luck Grin

GetOnYourDancingShoes · 11/06/2012 12:33

Sign me up for some squares.
So sad that another blanket is needed so soon but it would be an honour to take part.

tribpot · 11/06/2012 12:45

Good work hairy! Go you!

KnottyLocks · 11/06/2012 12:55

For those who have been asking about how many squares you can make from a 50g ball of yarn, I have been weighing a variety of knitted squares.

They have varied in weight from 12g to 18g for the simpler squares, with the majority of these weighing 14/15 g.
It really will depend on your tension and the density of your chosen stitch though.

Once you've made one, weigh it and the wool left and you should have some idea if you can get 2 or 3 squares from a ball.

MapofTassie · 11/06/2012 13:09

I'll start knitting too.
Have PM'd Pistey.

midoriway · 11/06/2012 13:21

I would be honoured to add a couple of crocheted squares. Will pm pistey. Can anyone recommend a nice yarn shop in Birmingham? I am absolutely done with House of Fraser, and would rather see a little local indie shop have my money.

prettybird · 11/06/2012 13:37

I have managed to squeeze out a square from my left over blue and cream here, with a wee anchor motif (thinking it would tie in with the sailing boats request). Had to cast-off in the Debbie Bliss off white, but that should be covered up by the linking crochet. :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 13:46

That is perfect Pretty Thanks

midoriway - I don't know Birmingham at all, I'm trying to think which of the Blanketeers are there. I'll see if I can find out for you, if I do, I'll PM you again.

Hopefully am up to date with PMs Smile

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2012 15:34

So sad that another blanket is needed, but thanks for alerting me to this thread Pistey.

Have just ordered my wool so will start knitting as soon as it arrives.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 17:59

Glad to have you back lovely Linzer Thanks

BarbaraWoodlouse · 11/06/2012 18:09

So sad that another blanket is needed so soon. Sad

I'm working in the the US this week and am needle-less (going to be working hard plus didn't fancy trying to get two sharp pointy things past US immigration Grin) but will get cracking on my return. I have some nice blues left but fancy a crack at the Tree (of Doom) in a nice green. Might also give Cucumberpatch a swerve this time in preference to some of our generous donor merchants.

Pitsey Wink will PM you shortly but please count me in.
