We recently heard the devastating news that Matildawormwood's beautiful baby son, Daniel, was born sleeping.
Matilda's thread is here. Our thoughts are with Daniel and Matilda?s family.

We have offered to make a blanket and Matilda is very touched that people would do this for their family. We hope that the blanket may give whatever comfort it can to them all.

So, we need knitters and crocheters. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.
At the moment there is quite a lot of wool still in circulation because of the current blanket projects. Where possible, we hope to 'recycle' as much as we possibly can.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool.

One ball should make at least 2 x 6' squares.
If you are a crocheter and/or an experienced knitter needing donor wool, could you let us know when you PM us as we can send part balls from the 'recycled' wool stash. Thanks.

The wool we are using:

  • Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK (NOT the baby cashmerino)

  • or Rowan Cashsoft DK.

They are very similar and can be combined.

  • 4mm knitting needles or hooks

  • knitters cast on 33 stitches (this is a guide for less experienced knitters)

  • 6" squares

We are also introducing two new yarns:

*Sublime Extra Fine Merino Wool DK.
It's another 'silky' wool that fits in nicely alongside the DB and Rowan wools and can be combined with both.

*Artesano Superwash Merino DK.
Although it isn't as silky as our normal wools, it is soft yet hardy and washes in the same way. It has the added appeal of being a good ethical option and is very reasonably priced.

The Colours:

Blues, greens and cream.

Ideas for squares:

The initials D and N

Motifs: Stars, trees, birds, hearts, snowdrops, sailing boats.

Please don't feel daunted by this as we really love plain squares and simple textures too. They look as stunning as the more complex squares and actually play a vital role in the overall effect.

Previous blankets can be seen on the WoollyHugs website. We also have a Facebook page: MNWoollyHugs.

As always, thank you so much for your support. Thanks Thanks Thanks

I'm in. Can do 3 or 4 simple squares as needed. Will pm pistey.

Jules146 · 11/06/2012 19:11

Do we have a 'post by' date?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 19:13

Not yet Jules - assume 3 ish weeks approx.
Thank you Babs X

Thanks
RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 19:18

Thank you tonight to a lovely donor. Heartfelt thanks for your generosity my lovely Thanks

Thanks LinzerTorte

LinzerTorte · 11/06/2012 19:20

Thanks, Pistey. I looked at Black Sheep but ordered from Cucumberpatch in the end as their postage rates to the continent are far cheaper. Took me ages to decide which shade of blue to go for, though. I've also ordered what I hope will be a cream coloured wool, although I'm a bit worried it might be too white.

My challenge this time round is to remember how to purl. Grin

tribpot · 11/06/2012 19:48

All, a sailing boat pattern but proceed with caution, I haven't tested it yet!

OpheliaBumps · 11/06/2012 20:07

So sad that another blanket is needed, but always happy to help - although happy is the wrong word really.

I've pm'd Pistey and will get cracking.

TimeForCake · 11/06/2012 21:21

Oh no. Sad
Pistey I will pm you when I can (on phone at mo). But just to say I'd like to do a square and have ordered my wool just now. I promise it will be 6" and on time!
Hope you don't think 'not her again with her wobbly crochet!' Grin I did think about donating this time but would really like to persevere. I know there are lots of other beginners too, but I'm sure they don't make as many cock ups as I do!

Ps my other woolly parcel should be on its way.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 21:34

When I see you coming Cakey, I think here comes a Blanketeer with a heart of gold X

KnottyLocks · 11/06/2012 21:53

Cakey, my lovely, squares with character made with heart are lovely Smile

Thanks, both of you. Thanks
A great team to be part of in the saddest of circumstances.

droitwichmummy · 11/06/2012 22:41

midori if you find a good yarn shop in Birmingham please let me know. I can't find one there or in Worcester. I usually end up in Hobbycraft and therein lies financial ruin!

(Sneaks in wave to Linzer)

LookAtHerGo · 12/06/2012 01:29

I can assist re wool shop in brum, but I'll have to do so in the morning as the name if shop I've been given is on a message that's not showing on my phone. Stupid iMessage only sending to one device!

Would anyone in or around brum want to meet for cake and crochet/knitting somewhere? We could make our squares together.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 12/06/2012 06:36

Morning everyone Brew

Off to answer PMs, and then off to work this morning. Back at lunchtime, so will catch up then. Thanks

SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 07:16

Kemps has the Sublime Merino in dark "hunter" green for £2.49.

It has other colours too but not ones in the right shades for this blanket.

KnottyLocks · 12/06/2012 07:25

Morning, lovely woolly folk. Smile

Thanks for that, Soupy. I may stock up a bit for the personal stash as well as a ball or 3 of the Frappe for any future blankets.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 07:40

I was looking for a sea green/blue as I had inspiration for waves onto which a sailing boat could be added.

KnottyLocks · 12/06/2012 07:52

Soupy, if you can hang on until after the school run, I think I may have some in my stash. Certainly enough for a square.

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 08:10

It doesn't even need to be a full square. I was thinking something like 2 inches of waves and then I could use cream for the "sky". I need to rummage in my drawers [snigger] but I don't think I have any sea colours - all pink.

SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 08:36

Cucumber Patch has sale balls of RowanCashsoft in the right shades.

Not that I am wasting my morning yarn shopping, oh no...

SoupDragon · 12/06/2012 08:47

I may have accidentally purchased some supplies for my stash Blush

KnottyLocks · 12/06/2012 09:14

Soupy, I have some yarn similar to this cardigan shade if that's any good.

OP posts:
MOSagain · 12/06/2012 09:14

Ordered my wool last night. Think I'm going to be a coward and stick with the boring plain Blush I seem to recall when watching my mum knit many many years ago, is purl just the opposite to the 'normal' stitch? If I master that, do you do a row of each or is it knit one purl one?

tribpot · 12/06/2012 09:16

You do a row of each, MOS - but you can do something different from plain without venturing into purl if you don't want to - have a look for Chinese waves in here.

blondieminx · 12/06/2012 09:23

I have offered wool via PM. These blankets are a lovely symbol of the support of MN x
