Support thread 2 - new blankets

This is a continuation of our thread supporting MNers creating blanket squares for Woolly Hugs. All are welcome and I'm hoping to post a link soon to a collection of our fave patterns, pics and links to keep them all in one place. In the meantime, this new thread will allow phone-based MNers like RedRosie to return from Special Phone Exile where she goes whenever the thread has too many messages on.

This is a thread of peace where knitters and crocheters, donors and crafters are all equally welcome.

Right-oh, will get on to it as soon as I've worked out why ds' Lego Harry Potter game on the Wii has crashed (and not in the place where it's always crashed).

Boat pic on profile, is it suitable?

tribpot · 11/06/2012 11:00

Looks cute, Pidj! Is that the German one?

Btw, Formerly linked to some gawjus crochet letters with the instructions in Spanish - Chrome should translate for you (I must have mine set up not to offer to translate Spanish I think) or there are charts.

PurplePidjin · 11/06/2012 12:18

Yes, I shall be putting my instruction up on the Team Hooker thread later so please steal for the Guide - I made several adjustments to my interpretation of the chart so we should get away with it!

tribpot · 11/06/2012 12:56

Will you be writing in the original German, Pidj? I hope so.

Ha, might do you a French translation later when I've had a nap

Pidj, I don't know if you want to send me a bigger image than the one on your profile? I can then create a document specifically for the ship crochet and then link to it like I do to my own patterns from the main doc.

Evening all - I see you are all talking dirty again!

(Ch6. Slst in 2nd ch from hook. Dc, htc, tc, xtc along)

Am knitting and donating this time ... And have just bought 2 greens (one dark, one sage-like) for the crafter - who I'm sure will be a better knitter than me - and another dark green for me.

I like your boat Pidj ... I'm planning to do the knitting-for-the craftily-challenged one that Trib is so kindly working on ...

Getting more confident with lace type stitches: anchor motif for Matilda's blanket in blue and cream square Pattern from my Big Fat Knitting Book.

Not a sailing boat - but at least it's nautical! Wink

PurplePidjin · 11/06/2012 17:44

I could try and email it, Trib? Drop me a pm :)

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 17:57

Busy, busy day in the World of Woolly PMs but it's all going really well Smile

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm · 11/06/2012 18:22

I ordered from black sheep at the weekend. They have lots of lovely stuff. My family are all getting scarves for Christmas!

I'm making up my own boat design and it's looking not too bad even if I do say so myself!

tribpot · 11/06/2012 19:30

Right, here goes. Usual caveats - try to follow the chart at the same time as the written pattern, if in doubt the chart is clearly right because it looks like a sailing boat! Let me know if there are any problems.

Has anyone ever done that thing where they switch hands and needles at the end of the row ... And then start knitting with the long end of the wool from casting on instead of the wool from the ball?

Just me then.

Blush
tribpot · 11/06/2012 19:53

Yup, Rosie. V easy to do. Tis a punishment on us for not estimating the amount of yarn needed for the long tail cast on more exactly Confused

OP posts:
RedRosie · 11/06/2012 19:55

Thanks Trib.

As that will come up a bit big ... Can I do it on smaller needles - say 3.5mm?

tribpot · 11/06/2012 19:59

Yes, if you've got them, move down a size. I didn't want to chop the pattern down as I thought it might mess with the proportions of the boat. The other way to do it is only to knit one border stitch on each side - so instead of each 'knit 3' at the beginning and end of each row, just do a knit 1. That will bring it down to 36 stitches.

OP posts:
RedRosie · 11/06/2012 20:11

I got loadsa needles ... I went a bit nuts when I started out. Every size known to woman - so would you try 3.5 or 3.75? 3mm would be too small maybe? I don't really have the experience to guess at it ...

tribpot · 11/06/2012 20:30

If you've got 3.25 I'd go down to them, 3mm is a bit on the side as you say.

OP posts:
RedRosie · 11/06/2012 20:37

Ok. Will give it a go on those and see what it looks like after a few rows.

Once I've extracated myself from the earlier, errr, "incident".

bobkate · 11/06/2012 21:50

Hi! Popping in to introduce myself Smile.. new to knitting, new to the woolly hugs gang and new to regularish posting Grin.
So, I've found a local store that sells Debbie Bliss Cashsomething DK, so just emailed them to find out if the colours I like are in stock....and then I'll get cracking. Got my mum hunting in her cupboards to see if she has size 4 needles. If she doesn't, can anyone recommend a good pair for beginners. I've looked on the blacksheep website, and many others but the choice is ridiculously large and I'd rather someone say look, these are great. Cheers Smile

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm · 11/06/2012 21:55

Ladies, I need your opinions please. Triumphantly I stuck my knitting under DHs nose and asked what he thought. He asked what it was, I said a boat, he said it looks like a one fingered salute. What do you think? do I frog it?

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm · 11/06/2012 22:00

Hi bobkate, I was you back in march, never knitted successfully before. These ladies will keep you right. What I can say is your local shop will have needles. 4mm is what we use for the blankets. I only say that because size 4 is American sizing and is different to 4mm :).

In a few months you can be knitting rude gestures like me! :o

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm · 11/06/2012 22:10

Sorry that's a link to ds, but scroll to the next picture.

bobkate · 11/06/2012 22:13

Thanks glaikitFizzogKnitteroftherealm.....( wow that took some concentrating!!! Grin )..... love the pic of your ds I presume with all the wool! And wow, if that's how good I can hope to be in 3 months I'll be well chuffed! It's all so neat and lovely!
The thing is that the local store is actually an online shop, but it's correspondance address is up the road, so I'm hoping I can maybe pop along and collect in person. Prob not, so if not I'll order on line and have to wait, impatiently! Hence the need for needles recommendations Smile
P.S What's frogging it?
