Support thread 2 - new blankets

This is a continuation of our thread supporting MNers creating blanket squares for Woolly Hugs. All are welcome and I'm hoping to post a link soon to a collection of our fave patterns, pics and links to keep them all in one place. In the meantime, this new thread will allow phone-based MNers like RedRosie to return from Special Phone Exile where she goes whenever the thread has too many messages on.

This is a thread of peace where knitters and crocheters, donors and crafters are all equally welcome.

My mum knitted me a lovely shawl (not too lacy - just with a border) for ds in white cotton Patons quite deliberately so that it would be easy to wash.

tribpot · 10/06/2012 19:11

bird - how was it to dry? I suppose a shawl was getting a bit less vommed on on a daily basis than most of my ds' stuff ... I hope, anyway.

I hope you are not taxing that foot Trib? Otherwise, I'll have to write another poem - and you know what happened last time :o

I see sadly, that another blanket is underway for Matilda :(

For my plain one this time, I'm going to try "little check" stitch, and will need something for the second ... Any ideas?

tribpot · 10/06/2012 19:22

Yes, the foot's a bit tired, Rosie, but ds has had a bit of a cooped-up half term what with the weather, the trip to Suffolk and the fact I was working (at least when not unexpectedly sampling the delights of the NHS for 2 days running). So we got a bit carried away today, and it's Jorvik time again on Tuesday now we've sussed it all out for DH and his wheels. (We're not skiving school, we have two extra days off, hurraw! No sorting uniform out tonight for meeee).

I've started adding some ideas to the handy guide along the lines specifically requested this time - snowdrop lace is looking lovely, there are some cute boat patterns that are just knit and purl as well. I particularly like the look of come sail away.

My DSCs are great strapping things now ... One can even DRIVE A CAR which I can't get my head around at all. But back in the day your DS's day out today would have been my DSS's idea of heaven. Love York.

That little boat is lovely ... Can you do something for the likes of me to follow - if you can find the time?

prettybird · 10/06/2012 19:44

Actually can't remember: ds, as well as being a good sleeper was also a very clean baby Smile so it didn't need to get washed very often and I also had a fleece blanket that I used a lot.

tribpot · 10/06/2012 19:46

Yip, shouldn't be too hard, esp as I see it's already a written pattern, just one that's 120 stitches wide :)

Now that ds is a bit older there's quite a few places I want to go to that I realise now I tried to interest him in at too young an age - like the Planetarium in Amsterdam Zoo. Not helped by the fact it was Ewan McGregor mysteriously speaking in Dutch! But I think he would love it now whereas he found it a bit too overwhelming last time. We had a fab time on the 'Travel Through Time' simulator, which appeared to be hurling about in a flying saucer, and were making so much noise laughing and shouting that I think we attracted some more business cos the ticket man let us have the second go half price :)

Ewan talking Dutch sound just fine to me. He could talk Klingon and I'd still go weak at the knees. He make me proud to be Scottish!

I did nt think about it taking an age to dry. Ah well wool bought now so that's what she's getting. I can get 19 squares out of a ball, they are just over 5g each. If I get 72 squares I and do an 8x9 square blanket, 18 of each colour Sorry just doing my mental arithmetic out loud!

tribpot · 10/06/2012 20:02

It wasn't Ewan! It was just a Dutch guy! (They had the original soundtrack's credits running, but the vocals dubbed, lovely).

I'm sure it'll be fine about getting it dry - and the colours are lovely so provided her baby isn't a Monster Puker like my ds, she should be okay! You realise though you could do squares of two or four colours and then mix 'em that way with less sewing to do?

RedRosie · 10/06/2012 20:07

Ewan McGregor? Hmmm, not bad. Cute smile ...

Robert Carlyle for me :o :o

Must stop the letching ... I am very old and should be knitting.

Well Pidj it seems it's quite simple according to Google Translate:

The sail is always just crochet stitches into the rear limbs, thereby to remove any number beginning a stitch. The crochet stitches for the body through both mesh links.

Simps! Confused

(I do think 'remove' means decrease but I'm translating blind as I have no idea what the right crochet terminology would be). I can persevere / ask a German mate to translate if it will help!

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 10/06/2012 21:11

into the rear limbs is probably back loop crochet - a way to give texture.

I reckon the sail is back loop so it comes up in textured stripes, probably with the first and last sts worked through both loops for stability.

for the body through both mesh links in that context would mean sts are worked through both loops, ie the normal way.

Can someone on a device with a big screen please peer at it too see if I'm right?!

PurplePidjin · 10/06/2012 21:14

It's a bit blurry on my little tablet but it might be blo... Certainly looks a different texture to me...

RatherBeOnThePiste · 11/06/2012 06:15

Pidj - I can get you a German translator if you need one I think?

Morning everyone Brew

PurplePidjin · 11/06/2012 06:59

I'll have a play later, see what i can do with my GCSE from 15 years ago :)

tribpot · 11/06/2012 07:20

Morning all -

I think I shall knit a tardis this morning - in screaming red for ds' summer fair 'red' stall.

I've nearly finished revising the sailing boat pattern, though, so if anyone is keen to get cracking, let me know.

OP posts:
RedRosie · 11/06/2012 07:40

I'll have that when you are ready Trib ...

No screaming hurry as I've started my little check stitch one, but I quite like having two on the go - concentrates the mind.

It will be very easy to follow ...?

Have a lovely day off ... The weather here has to be seen to be believed.

tribpot · 11/06/2012 07:51

It will involve instructions like 'knit 3, purl 7, knit 3', Rosie. There will of course also be a handy diagram :) In fact, I drew it up last night and realised I was reading (or diagramming) the instructions the wrong way round, so my sailing boat is sailing in the opposite direction to the one in the blanket. In that spirit, I will do boats sailing in both directions.

Just had some lovely crochet contributions from FormerlyTitledUntidy - thank you so much! Mostly under Flowers and Other, with a new heart added as well.

OP posts:
RedRosie · 11/06/2012 08:32

Exactly my level Trib.

You know me so well :o

GlaikitFizzogKnitterOfTheRealm · 11/06/2012 09:38

I'll have the boat pattern too when it's ready, please.

Pastabee · 11/06/2012 10:18

Hello all,

Can I please have the boat pattern too trib so I can have a go at it for Matilda's blanket.
