We have heard the very sad news that our own lovely WubblyBubbly passed away very peacefully this week, after two years living with breast cancer. MrWubbly let us know on this thread, where many have expressed their condolences and shared their memories of Wubbly.

We have offered to make a blanket for MrWubbly and their son, Lawrie. MrWubbly has said that both he and Lawrie would love this and they are very touched by the idea. We hope that it may bring whatever comfort it can to them both.

So, we need knitters, crocheters and donors. If you would like to donate wool, then we can match you up with a crafter.

RatherBeOnThePiste will coordinate and match crafters and donors, and deal with the admin side. I'll try to answer any queries you may have and will put together the blanket.

If you would like to be involved in any way, please post on this thread and PM Pistey with your offers: crafting, donating, need wool, etc, and she will match you up.
If you are offering to donate, we would be grateful if you would let us know if you'd like to donate 1 or 2 balls of wool. They cost roughly £5 per ball.

Crafters, if you need wool please let Pistey know if you'd like 1 or 2 balls of wool.
One ball should make at least 2 x 6" squares.

Thank you all so very much Thanks

I am holding out on sending my squares for this (so there is still a good chance I'll miss the deadline :o) so I can send Mrs Ks squares at the same time (two done, three to go)

Brew Morning

at Soupy

It was busy in here last night!

Pidj? Controlled around wool? She must have been on best behaviour!

Nice to see OliviaMumsnet in Smile and August, what a lovely lovely square, I don't know how you people do such clever things!

There is a red light next to my inbox.... Quickly make another Brew and I will be right with you

Thanks
KnottyLocks · 03/03/2012 08:42

Soupy, one package will be fine especially considering creative labelling

After the necessary vat of Guatemalan Arabica this morning, I shall hot foot it to the post office to post wool to Pidj and LatteLady.

GentleOtter,

Your squares have just arrived. Gorgeous Star. Thanks

The sunflower seeds and postcard for Lawrie from your son are a very very lovely thing to do. You are so thoughtful.
And thanks for the chocs, I shall of course share them with Pistey if they last long

Sorry folks, I've bitten my tongue for AGES now, but IF IT DOESN'T COME FROM A SHEEP, IT'S NOT WOOL! Grin

For dishcloths and facecloths you're best off using a cotton yarn, as it won't stretch or shrink and will wash at really high temperatures. I know people say "wool" to mean anything you knit with, but it's inaccurate. I know, it's my own personal bugbear and no one else gives a crap. Sorry, I couldn't keep it in any longer. Let the flaming commence. :(

Whenisitmysleepytime · 03/03/2012 11:03

Is the correct terminology yarn then? Confused

I've started my last square while dd is napping and the boys are swimming. Aaaah peace! :)
Think it'll be my last one- it's square no 3 but the ball of wool yarn cashmerino still looks quite full?!?
Don't think I'll get it finishe today tho as the sun is shining and dd is well again so we MUST leave the house! :)

DonkeyTeapot · 03/03/2012 11:03

And now I feel bad for ranting. It was supposed to come across as light-hearted, but now I don't think it does. Apologies.

PurplePidjin · 03/03/2012 11:05

You're right, Donkey...

Knitting with cotton wool would be odd indeed...

SoupDragon · 03/03/2012 11:09
DonkeyTeapot · 03/03/2012 11:14

Whenismysleepytime Yep, it's all yarn :)

Cashmere comes from goats but merino comes from sheep, so cashmerino (which is just a brand name as far as I know) does indeed qualify as wool.

It might also be worth mentioning that the acrylic stuff vailable in charity shops and places like Wilko, whilst great for practising and definitely better for the budget, is actually quite flammable. Wool will not continue to burn after the flame is removed, so if you hold a match to it and take it away, it will go out. Acrylic will carry on burning after the flame is taken away.

I'll shut up now. I could go on for ages, I'm definitely a fan of wool, for many reasons.

nickelhasababy · 03/03/2012 11:26

donkey - i'm with you.
my rant is Victoria Sandwich GrinBlush

alibubbles · 03/03/2012 11:35

I am happy to knit if someone sends me some wool please!

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 03/03/2012 11:36

Im with you Donkey, and that is why I said cotton yarn for facecloth thingies.

nickel what is wrong with Victoria Sandwich? Is she not very happy to be eaten?

I was browsing knitting stitches and patterns at midnight last night. DH is getting worried about me. I am getting worried about me! Grin

DonkeyTeapot · 03/03/2012 11:41

I did notice that Jax, my heart gave a little leap when I saw it :)

nickelhasababy · 03/03/2012 11:44

she's very happy to be eaten, but she is not a sponge (which most people seem to call her)

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 03/03/2012 11:52

why not nickel? even those cheffy tv people say victoria sponge - I am sure even Mary Berry says it... off to check my Delia books and other chefy recipe books. Will report back.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2012 12:01

How is it not a sponge?

DonkeyTeapot · 03/03/2012 12:02

Just saw Soupdragon's comment - no need to run, I LOVE wool! Especially when it actually is wool :)

Meant to say as well that knitted facecloths are brilliant - the stitches give a texture that is "scrubby" enough to feel like it is cleaning your face, whilst still being soft, and they are an ideal size to practise new stitches and patterns. Cotton yarn comes in loads of lovely colours too, so you can knit loads and give them as gifts with nice smellies at Christmas.

I really will stop launching off on massive tangents now. How's everyone's blanket squares doing?

nickelhasababy · 03/03/2012 12:43

they do.
they are wrong.
a sponge has very little, or no, fat in it - so if it's got butter in, it ain't a sponge.
sponges are spongy because of the way air is whipped into them.
a victoria sandwich has lots of fat in, so is not a sponge. and its name is Victoria Sandwich. its definition is creamed cake.
