Slot machine! Also known as fruit machine - or puggies here in Scotland

Thanks and now youve set my brain thinking where does the word "puggies" come from?

BTW its also the first time I've seen it written down.

Don’t mix it up with a puggle though. They are juvenile echidnas and sometimes I have seen it refer to baby platypuses.

I've wasted so much money over the years playing the puggies - they're still a complete mystery to me.

No idea where the word came from - puggie/pokie sound similar, so there must be a link. What the link is I don't know!

From the Scots language -

PUGGLE, v. Also pagar-. To baffle, nonplus, defeat, “do for”, most freq. in ppl.adj. puggled, -t, at a standstill from exhaustion or frustration, done for, at the end of one's resources.

Thankyou that makes perfect sense. I went on a Google and couldn't find an answer there either.😃

Although according to another search I've just done, puggies are something to do with organ grinders monkeys, so who knows!

So far, nothing about Upton would indicate to me that he's not as tough as bloody nails.

Middle-class Madras boy, so probably not that tough unless he's dealing with folk smaller than himself... Those from The Waid tend to be a bit harder. (I've had colleagues who worked at both.)

Mind you, some of the Madras kids are a bit full of themselves.

When I was a bairn, puggies were the wee engines that pulled the coal waggons on the railway line.

I first heard the word being used to mean slot machines when I was working in a school in the central belt, 2000.

In Fife, if you're puggled, you're tired. I think it's a politer form of buggered. I'd hear women saying it: "I'm fair puggled..."

My brain is blank at the moment, so I've forgotten the linguistic terminology, but it's the phenomenon whereby one plosive softens and the 'r' becomes an 'l'. (I could have told you 45 years ago....)

And once again, she's done absolutely nothing.

All the actual issues affecting women, and 'trans woman has job' remains your priority.

Dr. Upton isn't a woman, though.

I recall that it can mean any engine, but it specifically referred to the wee coal engines when I was young. Used to see them going over the railway line at the back of what was once the No. 7 Pit in Cowdenbeath, behind the bings and still open, abandoned mine shafts. (The NCB management has a lot to answer for.)

I'm well aware of how ED shift patterns work. I was picking up on your claim that the brutal shift patterns will not be conducive to taking part in sports or other regular community activities. He's doing both as his work allows, just as other referees do. I'd love to know which team he's playing for, or how he is insisting being referred to.

I don't feel at all sorry for his wife. She appeared very supportive of him throughout his appalling behaviour in court (and presumably in the lead up to it) and she has free will. She could have left and can leave at any point, but again, has chosen not to.

My sympathies lie with Peggie and every other woman he's shown nothing but contempt for.

Edited

I do have sympathy for his wife, given that she has also been thrust into the limelight to an extent by his behaviour. I doubt if it's easy to have a notorious husband who is regularly, and rightly, criticised for his behaviour. However she sees him, her choices are limited. Leaving a marriage, should she see that as an option, is rarely an easy choice, and it would be hard for her to do so quietly.

I found that too but it didn't make much sense, your answer of relating it to puggled, empty makes more sense, the aim being to empty it (or it your pockets) 😆

I'm amazed she went to Auz with him.
He has thd ability to become a very dangerous man. He has no respect for womens boundaries.

Read something saying 'puggie' could mean a cash teller machine in Scotch-land??

That sounds a bit similar to a poker machine although also, the reverse - a bit like sexual health nurses tell gay men 'it's an exit, darling, not an entrance'.

Like others, I'm perplexed as to the pokie/puggie similarity - the Australians put '-ie' or '-ey' endings in front of everything to familiarise/infantilise/dimunitise, but the Scottish term does sound like another possible origin.

Mea culpa for the lingo faux pas. So he is a lesbian heterosexual male.
He must consider himself lesbian as he believes he is a woman and is married to a woman, and my head is now well and truly scrambled with it all!

Dr. Upton, the lesbian straight male medical doctor.

Queue this way >>>> for examination and treatment.
