I don't perceive or categorize trans women as men so it's hard to answer. If a woman is actually distressed at the prospect of being treated by a trans woman, then a cis female doctor should be sent instead. Ideally, nobody should be treated by a doctor they feel unsafe with. But two things, 1) I don't think the number of patients with this particular need is that big, 2) I think inclusion should be the default and exclusion the exception, so I don't think Dr Upton is in the wrong to offer treatment. I also think it's ingenious to imply sexual or fetishistic motives; I would expect a Dr to offer treatment.

You say you don’t perceive or categorise transwomen as men, but do you acknowledge they are male? Because that was the scenario. Whether a female patient should expect a female person when they request one.

But not to go against the wishes of his patients or claim to be the sex of the Dr a woman has requested when he's not?

My understanding is this:

  1. Patient sees and recognizes Dr Upton
  2. Patient becomes alarmed at the prospect of being treated by Dr Upton
  3. Big strong man stands guard in case the hospital forces his wife to get treated by this one doctor

Verdict: Dr Upton GUILTY of being spotted at her place of work.

Nah, it's because this heterosexual man who has already violated a nurse's boundaries, pretends he's a lesbian and doesn't understand biology has said he would show up to treat a woman who had explicitly asked him not to show up, and has engineered a position where he can do exactly that, and so her husband is making damn sure he won't.

Newname26 · Yesterday 18:56

Well of course … except that since Aus law appears to say quite explicitly after Sall Grover’s defeat that transwomen are women, it seems impossible for hospitals to admit that someone like Beth/Liz Upton is male without breaking the law. So even proposing a chaperone could be problematic.

Not to mention that the chaperone could also be a TW. For the same reasons.

Until ordinary people in the country have had enough of this madness and insist on changing the law, it looks as though Upton and other males will be able to do as they wish.

The tide will turn.
Most people are tolerant until they really think it though or it affects THEM or someone in their circles not some other random.

"I don't think the number of patients with this particular need is that big"

Shall we do a round up of people just on this thread who have that particular need?

I will start it.

Yes, if I need to have an intimate procedure, I always ask for a female doctor. I even used to go specifically to a female reproductive clinic to make sure that I did get that while I lived in NSW. I am not going to tell you the reason why, because I fucking shouldn't have to

So, me. I am one.

Anyone else? No need to say why, we just need to vote yes, we do want and need a female health care professional or no, we don't.

It’s literally the only prerequisite to be a trans woman. You have to be a man. Despite what you wear or what body modifications one does. They’ll always be male.

Why are grown adults still acting daft in 2026.

I wonder at what point Dr Upton regretted going after Sandie Peggie? Can’t say I have any sympathy for him.

None if he regretted it he wouldn't do it again.

Hes bound to run into another Sandi at some point (but possibly not Sandis magically deep pocketed friend)

Helleofabore · Yesterday 18:59

Plus, I have two friends in Australia and two sisters who also want female health care professionals when they request them.

I have not had the discussion with any one else there. But, hey, the odds are looking pretty fucking shaky on that "I don't think the number of patients with this particular need is that big" statement.

Yes.

I can explain why if need be, but there should be no requirement for this.

It should never come down to NEED, if a woman asks for a woman she should get a actual woman not a deluded man.

Regardless of her reasons if she's made the request it should be respected.

For intimate examinations - yes

For non intimate examination - no.

What I want in 100% of my interactions with Drs however is:

  1. honesty
  2. respect for my wishes
  3. someone who knows that men cannot be biologically female.
Helleofabore · Yesterday 19:10

"I think inclusion should be the default and exclusion the exception, so I don't think Dr Upton is in the wrong to offer treatment."

You don't think that Upton is wrong to offer treatment if a female person has specifically asked for a female health care professional?

You really do come across as hating women and girls.

By the way, 'inclusion' isn't just one direction. 'Inclusion' also can include female people's needs before any male person's demands. It is the very opposite of 'inclusion' to default to demanding that female people are put in a position where they have to consciously reject a male person who has presented themselves as the 'female health care professional' requested.

Your values are very skewed if you truly believe that female people should be put in that situation and that that situation is 'inclusive'.

Same here. If I want to receive intimate (or any) care from a female medic then I don't expect the organisation and said medic to lie to me. Do no harm.

Thats your choice.
And people have different boundaries.

Some women wouldn't want a man near her big toe, others wouldn't mind.

You do not know what that person has been through.
You do not know their beliefs.
Or it might just be they don't want men touching them.

Respect

selffellatingouroborosofhate · Yesterday 19:13

Let's look at English and Scots criminal law cases. There are at least two UK cases where women, one of whom was trans-identifying, were jailed for sexual assault by penetration because their victims had consented to sexual intercourse with a man using his penis, not sexual intercourse with a woman using a strap-on. That one was trans-identifying didn't magically make her victim's consent valid.

Yet we are expected to believe that a doctor lying about his sex to a patient who has explicitly asked for a particular sex of HCP somehow isn't invalidating his patient's consent? Pull one of the others, it has bells on.

Absolutely - I'm not arguing for anything else. Women should have the right to choose, and they should certainly have the right to Drs who respect their patients' bodily autonomy and the right to see Drs who don't lie.

No I think the husband's posturing is a little humorous considering there is no scenario where this would have ever occurred unless the patient was dying and Dr Upton was the literal only Dr on earth

You think anything about this is fucking humerous?

What reason would there possible be for no family or friend of this woman to make a statement in the media?

I can think of two court cases that are currently going through Australian courts that could provide the very reason. Because there are currently two female people going through court or have been through court, one in NSW and one in QLD, who used male language to describe a male person in media.

If a female person cannot be very clear that their issue is that the male person being 'male' is the very issue, then it does deter clear statements being made. It also means that some people will jump to the conclusion anyway that the person is just a bigot because the male person is 'trans' and that they are transphobic.

Seems a very possible reason why a person in Australia, particularly in NSW, would not make an explicit claim about a male person being a male person?

It would then also be victim blaming any female person for not speaking out about a male person being a male person if they feel they cannot do so without significant negative repercussions.

Aye, exactly. If you can get prosecuted for calling a man a man, you aren't going to say that a man is a man to the press.

GailBlancheViola · Yesterday 19:28

If I request a female HCP I want a female HCP, I will not accept a male identifying as a female.

Nor will I give any reason to anybody who asks why I have requested a female HCP and nor should I be expected to or have to, neither I nor any other woman should ever be required to justify the request.

I need a female nurse for smears. Having my vagina stretched with a speculum brings back unpleasant memories of being hurt there, which are made a lot lot worse if I can also see, hear, or smell a man.

I also shouldn't have to relive those memories in order to justify my request for a female nurse. Simply asking for a woman should be enough.
