๐Ÿ™„ sorry about DM link - itโ€™s the only one not behind a paywall. Men on the Facebook group are saying that women should join female only gyms.

David Lloyd sparks equality row by excluding men from spa areas

The exclusive gym group has introduced weekly women-only spa sessions in several of its branches due toย what it described as 'significant feedback' from female members.

And the Member Experience and Membership Director is a woman. But I'm not sure what this has to do with anything?

I have already taken it up with the Board, but thanks for your advice anyway. Or was that a sly way of telling me not to post here if I don't share your views? ๐Ÿค”

My view posted earlier is "I can see why men would be pissed off then. If the shoe was on the other foot I'd be fed up." So I do actually share your view.

What a bizarrely aggressive response!

Aye. He's fuming.

MyPeachBiscuit · 19/10/2026 10:53

The problem with men's only sauna sessions, men's only gyms, men's swimming sessions etc is that few heterosexual men are interested in using them. Plenty of women are willing to pay to use women's only services for reasons of comfort, safety and dignity, but men are far less likely to feel uncomfortable or unsafe in a mixed-sex environment.

I'm arguing it. It's a matter of principle. It is completely wrong to be sexist, and sexism is what this is. Do you think it's ok to be racist if it's only for two hours, one day a week?

It's lawful discrimination in line with the provisions of the Equality Act. I'm sorry you aren't allowed to be racist for 2 hours a week, but no one thought that would be necessary when drafting the legislation.

What a bizarrely aggressive response!

Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t like what they are taking about, it is the fact that they would dominate a space for relaxation with their loud and obnoxious โ€œbanterโ€.

You donโ€™t think it is inappropriate for a stranger to ask me out when I am simply trying to relax and am in an enclosed space with him while wearing a bikini? If you canโ€™t see how disrespectful that is, then I am sorry for how low your standards are.

And you donโ€™t need to โ€œcheck someone outโ€ to be able to see they are leering.

Feel free to frequent a different gym that doesnโ€™t help women feel more comfortable using the spa for 2 hours a week. I left my gym in part because it did not have that option, and so I wasnโ€™t able to use the spa. Welcome to the world - we can pick and choose according to our preferences.

They didnโ€™t know the women were asking for one. DL have not communicated this change to the membership we are all paying for. The first I knew about it was when I was at the spa with my boyfriend last week and I noticed a tiny sign in the spa. We pay for couples membership so weโ€™ve now lost an evening, which is the time we normally go. Just because he was born with a penis.

I have emailed DL asking for further details. I am extremely perturbed that a modern health club is exercising blatant discrimination against 50% of its members in the year 2026. Itโ€™s frankly shocking, and women who support it are tacitly condoning this discrimination.

Would your boyfriend attend a men-only slot?

I definitely think it would be fair to offer that as well if men wanted it.

Where did I say I want to be racist? I abhor racism. And sexism. I don't see what some people think one is acceptable and the other not. Hypocrisy at its worst.

It's not relevant whether he would attend a men only slot. He is one man and cannot speak for all men.

You don't appear to understand equality legislation, and you seem slightly over-invested in whether anyone can be racist for 2 hours a week.

Women are not the ones overwhelmingly responsible for sex crimes. Thatโ€™s just a fact.

What are the statistics for sex crimes in David Lloyd clubs?

JellySaurus · 19/10/2026 11:15

PastMidnight appears to think that equailty is exactly the same provision for women and for men. The rest of us see that a meagre 2hr slot for women helps to provide equity.

I got chatting to a Muslim man quite recently about swimming and saunas who said he loved them but he didn't go any more since the gym he went to dropped the male-only sessions. So absolutely, put on male-only sessions, and see if there's demand.

I know you think thatโ€™s a clever โ€œgotchaโ€ question, but in fact it only serves to highlight your lack of understanding of the Equality Act. Others have already tried to explain to you how the gymโ€™s position is lawful; your refusal to accept or understand that is your own problem, Iโ€™m afraid.

I would attend a women-only session.
I am not speaking for all women, just for myself.

If the interest in there for a men-only session, they should ask for one.

Why are you asking for David Lloyd specifically? Wouldn't it make more sense to ask about sex crimes in saunas? Unless, perhaps, you're trying to imply that men who can afford David Lloyd fees are far too genteel to commit sex crimes? You think thst only working-class men at council facilities can do so?

Mumsnet and the classism never changes, does it. Oddly, just a couple of years ago, newspapers were reporting on incidents happening in the sauna of a club that was the preserve of the extremely rich. Let me see if I can find a link.

I'd bet those same men would also complain more generally about the existence of female only gyms.

Thank you for your patronising reply.

Nowhere have I said that the gym's position is unlawful.

Equality is not achieved through more discrimination.

Nowhere have I referred to, or argued about, the legislation.

Do you think it's ok to be racist for 'only' two hours a week? If not, why do you think it's ok to be sexist for 'only' two hours a week?

Goodness me, how on earth did you arrive at that conclusion?

I asked about David Lloyd because that's the club we're discussing but fine, give me the stats for sex crimes taking place in ALL saunas and we can discuss those. I'll look out for your reply.

Do you think that women-only changing areas are sexist?

MerryAquaKoala · 19/10/2026 12:03

I cannot stand being in a sauna with random men. They are gross they are pervy. You can tell me different, I am sure you will, it's when some MN posters are in their element. However men in women's saunas, no thanks. Go to a mixed one if you don't mind.

A gym which has a female only classes, hours, will do well. Many women want this. And those who don't, have the rest of the time.

Sure have similar men's ones too, whatever, couldn't care less not my issue.

You can argue that way all you like. You won't win because, legally, you're wrong.

If you, and others, demonstrate it will lose more business than it gains, they'll listen to you.
