๐Ÿ™„ sorry about DM link - itโ€™s the only one not behind a paywall. Men on the Facebook group are saying that women should join female only gyms.

David Lloyd sparks equality row by excluding men from spa areas

The exclusive gym group has introduced weekly women-only spa sessions in several of its branches due toย what it described as 'significant feedback' from female members.

So you think ALL men in the spa behave disrespectfully. Is that correct?

What would your opinion be if ALL women were banned from the spa for two hours at peak times every week because some behave badly?

Women are not the ones overwhelmingly responsible for sex crimes. Thatโ€™s just a fact.

Can you define what you mean by โ€œperve on womenโ€? As I have no idea what you mean. Are you talking about inappropriate comments? Groping? What?

Heaven help you if youโ€™ despise 50% of the population so much that you think theyโ€™re all such ghastly people. Personally I go to the spa with my boyfriend and heโ€™s a delightful person, otherwise I wouldnโ€™t be dating him. Other times I go alone. If someone made an inappropriate comment I would deal with it. I donโ€™t need a man to deal with it for me. If someone groped me, Iโ€™d report it like greased lightning. If you could explain what else you might mean by โ€œperving on womenโ€, i will respond.

Youโ€™re being disingenuous.

They should ask for one if they want one. As presumably the women have done.

They didnโ€™t know the women were asking for one. DL have not communicated this change to the membership we are all paying for. The first I knew about it was when I was at the spa with my boyfriend last week and I noticed a tiny sign in the spa. We pay for couples membership so weโ€™ve now lost an evening, which is the time we normally go. Just because he was born with a penis.

I have emailed DL asking for further details. I am extremely perturbed that a modern health club is exercising blatant discrimination against 50% of its members in the year 2026. Itโ€™s frankly shocking, and women who support it are tacitly condoning this discrimination.

Men are not being offered a single sex session. Thatโ€™s discrimination.

It isn't if there isn't the demand for it. Business are allowed to use a business case for not providing some single sex services/spaces.

If you want a mens only session then you have to ask for it and then maintain the demand.

It really isn't. It's a legitimate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

Do you think itโ€™s ok to be racist as long as itโ€™s only on one day for two hours a week?

The Chairperson and CEO at David Lloyd are men.
If you think they're discriminating against men (or are racist) perhaps take it up with them.

I don't think it's discrimination, businesses are allowed to offer since sex spaces/sessions, and we know there is a reason to do that for women.

It does however mean BF and you, as a couple, are not getting what you paid for. You can argue that, or take your business elsewhere.

I donโ€™t need women only sessions for any cultural or religious reasons. But I really dislike using things like jacuzzis and saunas with men. I havenโ€™t had gym membership for a long time, but when I did I was really put off using the spa bit by men using the space to loudly discuss (boast about) their workouts, plans to go drinking, and dating. It was on the side of the pool and during aqua classes they would watch the women in the pool, often in a leery way.

On one occasion I was asked out on a date. On more than one occasion I could see men checking me out. It was not at all relaxing and sometimes felt a little unsafe. I would have welcomed women only sessions. One a week seems perfectly fair so that women can comfortably use the space.

As for the โ€œthey should offer a men only session tooโ€ issue - fine, if men ask for one. But they wonโ€™t because they donโ€™t need or want one as they are fine with the status quo and it does not stop them using the spa as it does women.

So because you donโ€™t like what some men are talking about, you think they should ALL lose access to the spa at peak times, one day a week. Is that correct? How about you just ignore what theyโ€™re talking about? Who cares? You canโ€™t control what people talk about. Thatโ€™s the sort of stuff some young lads might talk about in any environment. On the bus. In a shop. Thatโ€™s life. Personally I canโ€™t stand young girls squealing about things I consider to be rubbish but itโ€™s just not important.

What is wrong with someone asking you on a date? I mean, itโ€™s not exactly crime of the century, is it? Just say โ€˜noโ€™ next time. Itโ€™s really quite simple.

How do you know the guys were โ€˜leeringโ€™ if you werenโ€™t checking them out?

Lemieux7 · 19/10/2026 10:02

Those of you claiming discrimination - are you also annoyed that David Lloyd charges different members different amounts of money for the same service? Last year, a single person complained that they had put her membership up by ยฃ100 a month which is crazy - she went from paying ยฃ160 to ยฃ260 per month.

Businesses can do this sort of thing. Especially DL because they have a monopoly on the type of business model.

Nothing internalised about it. Itโ€™s upfront for everybody to see. Women shouldnโ€™t have things they need if men donโ€™t need them.

newyorknoshoes · 19/10/2026 10:04

I love it at my David Lloyd's on a Thursday evening when they come around and tell the men it's time to get out. They are so fucking dominant in there - I would say the vibe is not dissimilar to when a stag do get on the train and you just feel your heart sink. Manspreading, phones being played out loud, loud conversations, hogging facilities. I actually haven't noticed particularly lecherous behaviour at mine, but ugh I just hate them in there.

I never would have thought I'd be such an advocate of the female only hours but god you should feel the vibe shift when they go.

I see the issues with equal access/getting what you pay for. So if we need to give the men 2 hours a week to stop the complaint then go for it I say!

The alternative would be for David Lloyd to properly enforce spa etiquette - no phones allowed, silence, time limit on using facilities, shower (with soap!) before going.

GreenSedan · 19/10/2026 10:10

I'm a DL member and I love the women-only 2-hour slot. And not for cultural or religious reasons.

In that time, the spa is full of women talking to each other about how lovely it is and we all have a lovely time.

Any other time I go in, it's wall-to-wall hairy men taking up all the bloody room and hogging all the spaces.

PastMidnight · 19/10/2026 10:25

Redfluffyblanket · 19/10/2026 09:35

Yes. I've obviously never been the kind of woman men "perve over", or I'm blissfully unaware, it's not something I've ever been aware of. It's apparently so widespread on MN, I wonder if it's a weird stealth boast!

Me neither! ;)

And the Member Experience and Membership Director is a woman. But I'm not sure what this has to do with anything?

I have already taken it up with the Board, but thanks for your advice anyway. Or was that a sly way of telling me not to post here if I don't share your views? ๐Ÿค”

I'm arguing it. It's a matter of principle. It is completely wrong to be sexist, and sexism is what this is. Do you think it's ok to be racist if it's only for two hours, one day a week?

Yes, some men are hairy. Is that a crime? What would you have to say if a man posted here, complaining that there are too many women with big tits in the spa? You really don't seem to see the irony of what you are posting.

This must be David Lloyd thing, I'm afraid. I'm much happier at the council run facilities. I belonged briefly, and at DL I found men, women and children had a special kind of entitlement you don't see elsewhere.

I have discovered a council run spa. Hot tub, therapy pool, cold plunge and 4/5 different saunas/stream rooms. I have never experienced the kind of behaviour you're describing, everyone is pleasant and respectful.

I doubt it. I go to a DL
club and everyone is perfectly fine. No leering in saunas or steam rooms and no comments. Occasionally people of both sexes will discuss their workouts with friends who are there with them, but thatโ€™s bad etiquette rather than anything more sinister.

Maybe it is focused on particular areas.

What a bizarrely aggressive response!

Itโ€™s not that I donโ€™t like what they are taking about, it is the fact that they would dominate a space for relaxation with their loud and obnoxious โ€œbanterโ€.

You donโ€™t think it is inappropriate for a stranger to ask me out when I am simply trying to relax and am in an enclosed space with him while wearing a bikini? If you canโ€™t see how disrespectful that is, then I am sorry for how low your standards are.

And you donโ€™t need to โ€œcheck someone outโ€ to be able to see they are leering.

Feel free to frequent a different gym that doesnโ€™t help women feel more comfortable using the spa for 2 hours a week. I left my gym in part because it did not have that option, and so I wasnโ€™t able to use the spa. Welcome to the world - we can pick and choose according to our preferences.

At my DL, you know that as an older woman you need to be out of the spa by 5pm most days - earlier on a Friday - because it becomes colonised by the bros and is no longer a relaxing place. Shouting, loud conversations and leering, and unacceptable comments about younger women passing them. The spa staff find them too intimidating to do anything about.

Yep, I've gone in post work time and it's what I call testosterone hour, out come the bros, saunas packed and zero chance of getting in the hot tub (plus you wouldn't want to - some manky men come marching out of their mega long sauna session like the cock of the walk, and treat the tub as the place to wash off instead of the shower which is RIGHT NEXT TO THE SAUNA ๐Ÿคข)

Our club is very family orientated and it does make me wonder how many of these blokes tell their wives they're busy late 'working' in the lounge so she has to sort out the kids, as come 5pm they all flock in there!
