Men at David Lloyd, moaning and whining because the spa is female only for 2 measly hours a week

๐Ÿ™„ sorry about DM link - itโ€™s the only one not behind a paywall. Men on the Facebook group are saying that women should join female only gyms.

David Lloyd sparks equality row by excluding men from spa areas

The exclusive gym group has introduced weekly women-only spa sessions in several of its branches due toย what it described as 'significant feedback' from female members.

Then they need to deal individually with the ones causing the problem rather than taking the lazy blanket approach

yes itโ€™s only 2 hours but if thatโ€™s the only time that works for you and you canโ€™t go Iโ€™d be pissed off

And if youโ€™re a religious woman who wonโ€™t go bare-skinned among strange men, and its the only two hours that work for you? Or a woman who is a survivor of sexual violence? Or a woman with H cup breasts, who would like to swim without being ogled?

Tbh then it's not going to be suitable. You aren't going to pay David Lloyd prices for the 2 hours when you can use the spa out of the whole week.

If there is a problem with some men then DL needs to sort it. But like someone else said, it's mostly staffed by very young people and they rarely intervene on anything.

Why are you controlling what women choose to spend their money on?

But (and I hate to draw the parallel) isn't this a bit like third spaces. It's not up to women to be everyone's mum. Presumably DL have responded to requests from women. Women have lobbied and achieved an aim. If men want a men-only session then they need to ask for one. If they just don't want women to have that session then get their collective male acts together so women don't feel like they need them. (yes, yes I have had enough of men's shit)

Or DL could look at the equalities act and offer men an equivalent male-only session.

A simple solution but people seem to be against any suggestion of a male-only session and more in favour of complex solutions, such as men hunting the bad men, men organising a campaign against DL etc. It already appears to be esculating.

Time and time we see female-only events (with no equivalent male-only events) which leads to men attempting to find ways against it, either demanding it be shut down, identifying as women etc.

(I've never heard of men complaining about Mother's Day, because there is no man alive that is unaware of Father's Day)

Whoโ€™s said theyโ€™re against men-only sessions?

Part of the reason I stopped my DL membership was because I was sick and tired of men barging me out the way in the pool (that was always half closed off for some swimming lessons or water aerobics class or something else) and scratching their crotches next to me in the jacuzzi. And then spreading themselves out across the benches in the sauna so you can barely sit in there without touching their sweaty naked leg. No one was ever inappropriate in there around me but sitting in a closed dark room in a bikini with a couple of men just always felt insanely unsafe.
I understand why men are annoyed, but what a privilege to be annoyed that you canโ€™t use it for two hours a week, and never had to consider the alternative could be that youโ€™re uncomfortable using it the rest of the time.

Erm, bit of stereotyping going on here. For every caveman, thereโ€™s a cavewoman. You felt โ€œinsanely unsafeโ€? Why? What did you think was going to happen to you in a public health club?

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 15/10/2026 20:21

It's only for two hours a week and I am just guessing it's going to be something like 9am to 11am on a Tuesday not Saturday morning.

You would think given how some men behave that all the decent men there would go 'fair enough' if it makes some women more comfortable.

But that wouldn't make a good story for the Daily Mail.

Do you think itโ€™s ok to be racist as long as itโ€™s only on one day for two hours a week?

twocrumpets · 18/10/2026 23:38

They should stop being perverts then

How about if, like me, you believe that nobody should have to face discrimination on the grounds of gender or anything else that is a genetic accident? I donโ€™t particularly want to be surrounded by sexist bigots at my DL spa but there seem to be plenty of them on this thread!

kittykarate · 19/10/2026 07:28

The logical answer is to have an equivalent men only spa session, however other venues have tried this (Harrogate Spa) and there had been problems.

How is it discrimination on the grounds of the 'genetic accident' of sex, if both mixed-sex and single-sex sessions are offered? Or are you saying that giving women who want simgle sex provision two hours per week is not comparable to the much greater amount of time that is given to mixed sex provision?

JellySaurus · 19/10/2026 08:02

Ah, no, I've re-read your posts. You appear to think that providing women with any single sex provision is sexist bigotry, and that expecting men not to perve on women is sexist bigotry, and that recognising patterns of male behaviour is sexist bigotry.

OK then.

Redfluffyblanket · 19/10/2026 08:07

I can see why it's annoying if you turn up to use facilities you've paid for and find they're not available for you, or that they're not available during your usual slot.

Like if there were children only slots or when my pool is unusable for 'proper' swimming because it's full of kids during the holidays. It's a nuisance, and feels wrong when it's something you're paying for and using regularly. Why should any other customer take priority?

its not โ€˜taking priorityโ€™ itโ€™s creating a space for women because men make women feel uncomfortable. Thatโ€™s their fault - start behaving respectfully and these spaces wonโ€™t need to be created.

I've never had a DL membership, but there is one quite close to my house and the sauna/steam rooms would be one of the reasons I'm interested

But if it is as people say with men dominating the space and making it feel uncomfortable for women, then effectively in some DL gyms men have the majority of the spa time to themselves anyway.

I have noticed this behaviour in a gym I go to sometimes. Men crammed in the sauna and jacuzzi and maybe one or two women there too. It's not relaxing.

JanuaryLove · 19/10/2026 08:14

I do think the men have a point on this - but I abhor discrimination so I would not complain. However. I go to reformer Pilates and when I see a bloke there it gives me the rage! Squatting and legs akimbo inches from his face? No thanks. The noises they make as well! Do I complain? No. But I do think fuck off to football or the gym like a normal bloke ๐Ÿ˜‚

now you can judge me haha

This must be David Lloyd thing, I'm afraid. I'm much happier at the council run facilities. I belonged briefly, and at DL I found men, women and children had a special kind of entitlement you don't see elsewhere.

I have discovered a council run spa. Hot tub, therapy pool, cold plunge and 4/5 different saunas/stream rooms. I have never experienced the kind of behaviour you're describing, everyone is pleasant and respectful.

Boopsi · 19/10/2026 09:20

I donโ€™t need women only sessions for any cultural or religious reasons. But I really dislike using things like jacuzzis and saunas with men. I havenโ€™t had gym membership for a long time, but when I did I was really put off using the spa bit by men using the space to loudly discuss (boast about) their workouts, plans to go drinking, and dating. It was on the side of the pool and during aqua classes they would watch the women in the pool, often in a leery way.

On one occasion I was asked out on a date. On more than one occasion I could see men checking me out. It was not at all relaxing and sometimes felt a little unsafe. I would have welcomed women only sessions. One a week seems perfectly fair so that women can comfortably use the space.

As for the โ€œthey should offer a men only session tooโ€ issue - fine, if men ask for one. But they wonโ€™t because they donโ€™t need or want one as they are fine with the status quo and it does not stop them using the spa as it does women.

Can you define what you mean by โ€œperve on womenโ€? As I have no idea what you mean. Are you talking about inappropriate comments? Groping? What?

Heaven help you if youโ€™ despise 50% of the population so much that you think theyโ€™re all such ghastly people. Personally I go to the spa with my boyfriend and heโ€™s a delightful person, otherwise I wouldnโ€™t be dating him. Other times I go alone. If someone made an inappropriate comment I would deal with it. I donโ€™t need a man to deal with it for me. If someone groped me, Iโ€™d report it like greased lightning. If you could explain what else you might mean by โ€œperving on womenโ€, i will respond.

So you think ALL men in the spa behave disrespectfully. Is that correct?

What would your opinion be if ALL women were banned from the spa for two hours at peak times every week because some behave badly?

Yes. I've obviously never been the kind of woman men "perve over", or I'm blissfully unaware, it's not something I've ever been aware of. It's apparently so widespread on MN, I wonder if it's a weird stealth boast!

That sounds wonderful!

I go to a DL club and everyone has never been anything other than lovely. But then I donโ€™t go looking for drama in every situation.
