Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, who enjoy doing this and other interesting things. Any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

I like the idea of adjacent plots of land. I need a small wood with an orchard section so I can have free range pigs alongside my existing poultry. There must be a stream with a pond so I can sit on a rock and watch dragonflies in the summer. I will be industrious in keeping Himalayan balsam out and only have native trees and plants to best support the wildlife.

My ginger pigs will be for companionship only, not for slaughter. I like scratching pigs behind the ears. They are nice beasts.

Poor Weary! Have a nice restorative cup of tea/coffee/chocolate and a chocolate biscuit.

Hope jetlag isn't too awful, Woley. Sorry about the museum closures in Mondays, Errol. I remember liking the Manchester galleries very much last time I was there.

I have booked MsPastaJnr and I a treat for next summer and it's put a real spring in her step. We're going to see a theatre production we both love.

There is some debate about whether the "native plants only" approach is either necessary or desirable. Also around how far back you have to go to define something as native.

They are nice beasts.

They can be vicious (I have seen the aftermath). But also cute. My walks sometimes take me past a paddock with a pet pig in it, who is very partial to acorns.

I was told that Tito ordered that wild boar be let loose in a forest in order to deal with Yugoslav dissidents.

No idea whether that's true, but DH had to swerve to avoid a boar on the main road between Zagreb and Belgrade once.

EmpressaurusKitty · 28/09/2026 11:24

I could have a herb garden, obviously including catnip.

And learn to card & spin wool from the sheep & alpacas.

In the true spirit of MN, does anyone know where a pencil longer than 1.5 inches and with an unbroken lead might be in my house? And a pencil sharpener?

I suppose I could pop round to the post office and buy the necessary. Unless they've sold out because it's September.

Sending arnica to Weary, camomile to Woley's DH and a supply of invective to Errol.

It will be where Damson's hairbrush was, and my address book, i.e. NOT WHERE THEY HAVE CONSISTENLY BEEN FOR THE PAST DECADE OR SO😡

My Current Damson's Hairbrush is a weird one, it's a magnet on the end of a telescopic handle. It collapses down to about 6 or more inches apporx [I'm trying to be ImperialSmile] so it is not a small object, and the magnet at the end is a tough industrial-strength one, I also have one with a small magnet and a girly pink handle.
It was always attached to exactly the same place on metal shelving. Like, always. I always knew exactly where to find it when needed. Then suddenly, it wasn't there. Or anywhere at all.

I have my girly pink one to retrieve light things like dropped keys, screws, etc. so I'm not stuck, but I want to know where the f*ck something as obvious as a magnet on the end of a telescopic handle could disappear to, in a small house!

If I find it, I'll keep an eye out for a functioning pencil, Cher😄

Like nettles, rabbits and fallow deer.

I lost a spoon recently. Then it magically reappeared. DH is always losing his tools, because he never puts them away properly. He currently has one of my screwdrivers, because he couldn't find his. If it's not back where it ought to be by the end of next week, I will repossess it, whether he has finished the job or not.

A while ago, after reading the Crawdads book, I found this log cabin for sale. It's only 11 acres but maybe some of you can compromise on space?

https://www.landsale.co.uk/properties/142191

I have had a mixed day today. My knee has been given me gyp for a while so I booked in with a physio at the doctor's surgery, expecting to be told it's cause I'm fat. After much prodding and pushing on my knee from the physio, and pain on my part, she thinks I have a minor tear of my meniscus cartilage. Great.

In happy news though I have been offered a gorgeous female cat by a rescue. She's just had six babies and is ready to be neutered and have some peace! I think she needs a strong feminist name, do far I am considering Lilith or Boudicca but if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Ooh a calico girl, I love them the very best (don't tell my other cats)

I saw a wonderful ancient statue of Artemis earlier - that could be a cool and fierce name?

Beautiful cat! I think that, after this afternoon, you really should consider Naomi! 😻

Do you remember several threads ago that there was an island for sale and we all walked round it on Google, and some of us worked out how much we'd have to contribute to fund its purchase?

Now it looks as if we need to find a farm for sale, with lots of woods and streams, as so far three 10-acre plots have gone, Magpie is checking out the availability of trees for cider apples, I'm planning sheep and Angle is probably calculating what weight of seeds per hectare she needs to get a wildflower meadow going.

Woley, good to know that you have arrived in Australia. I found the jetlag an absolute sod, the worst I have ever experienced - it took my system about 3 days to sort itself out.

I'm up for sharing a farm! I think Rum's found one, although it's a bit smaller than we might need?

EmpressaurusKitty · 28/09/2026 17:14

Oh @RumNotRun, that’s brilliant. I’m so pleased for both of you.

EdithStourton · 28/09/2026 17:35

Hm, lovely plot, Rum, but it could prove a bit of a squash...

I was thinking more something like this, though it might stretch the budget just a teeeeeny bit

Or perhaps this

which is maybe more in budget, but not sure about the buildings.

Thanks for the tag @EmpressaurusKitty

I’ve been very drained lately from legal stuff and ongoing delays to the whole process. Has been going back and forth now for months.

Was following NC in the ET thread today so saw some of you there, which was nice. Won’t be able to follow it live tomorrow which is a shame.

I’m currently debating whether to take the recycling bin out now while I remember, or doing it later this evening (as just chilling) which brings the risk of forgetting. High stakes…

I wonder if the sellers would be happy being paid in sunflower seeds and stained glass? Maybe we could sweeten the deal with one of @EmpressaurusKitty's blankets and send @@ErrolTheDragon round to make the offer?

ifIwerenotanandroid · 28/09/2026 18:16

Worried about Naomi, the girls have abandoned their dance rehearsals to assemble some comforting supplies for their heroine, should she need them in court tomorrow.

Look at what the AI called some of the supplies!!! 'Habeus Cough-us' cracks me up. I'm seriously worried about humanity's future if AI can do this all on its own.

I reckon Fenella Burnish has millions stashed in offshore bank accounts. When she gets her comeuppance...

Ooh, yes.
Then we send Errol round to pay, thus ensuring we get the place and no one else does.

I need to go and read the ET thread...

I don’t know why I’m such an irresistible negotiator, I guess everyone doesn’t have my charm.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2026 19:56

Meanwhile, our route home from DH’s tests (which went ok) took us via China so I got some art of a sort after all.

Did some more womanning in the arena in a meeting.

And I have seriously rattled them. Two slips of the tongue revealing plans that I had already deduced but did not have evidence for. And very unsettlingly, being told eight times, "read it, then read it again, and then again" and another three times in the meeting. I was online with four or five others dialling in and the speaker was in a room with about seven other people. He absolutely lost his temper with me.

Then the speaker emailed me twice within five minutes of the meeting end and then 45 minutes later again saying "read it" among other things.

So I have been rather overwhelmed by it all and Gosie will have to wait till tomorrow, Apologies all.

And I'm 58 tomorrow.

ErrolTheDragon · 28/09/2026 23:13

💐sounds exhausting. Hope you can relax and get some sleep after all that.
Are you and the Walrus doing something special for your birthday, Myrtle?

MarieDeGournay · 28/09/2026 23:19

Just popped in to say g'night all, but now I'm also saying happy birthday for tomorrow, Myrtle!🍾🎂🎉

Happy Birthday, @MyrtleLion! I hope it’s free of annoying meetings.

My late in-laws lived on a farm which might been a contender for The Bluestocking annexe, but their family have been there for generations so it’s already passed down.
It doesn’t have a field of wildflowers but there are plenty in the woods and it does (or did) have a camomile lawn. And sheep. Not together.
And glorious views of hills, fields and water, and sunrises.
