Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

I don't get any anyone would defend her after today.

Her ableism and profound ignorance about non-verbal and autistic people is right there, on full display.

Saying Jason Arday was a 'fabulist' when he was highly qualified, very experienced in his field and a published writer who had a proven track record teaching PhD and postdoctoral students. Who became a Professor at his previous university.

All her posts about him are reprehensible, ignorant and self-centering. Implying that his intelligence disproved his autism, and that he invented being non-verbal - even though it's well-documented that he was.

Saying Cambridge lowered their standards by accepting him, as if he was some PE teacher who happened to be black rather than a respected professor.

Her patronising ableism is very dangerous. It affects every autistic person in academia when she intervenes on a subject she demonstrably has no expertise or experience in.

Kind of transparent she's covering her own arse for reposting Jo Bartosch's despicable comments about Arday last week. Plus most of her anti-trans allies were busy being racist shits about him last week, notably Stock and Bartosch.

What is it with her and people who are different? Minorities don't owe her a performance of their difference, and she doesn't get to pronounce on who's real or not. Horrible bigotry, but unsurprising given her transphobia.

Um.... you realise Arday was exposed as a FRAUD, right? And a sociopath. Almost everyone agrees with Rowling over Arday. You're in the misinformed minority.

NotBadConsidering · 19/08/2026 02:39

Del Boy and Rodney were “highly qualified” in international trading.

NotBadConsidering · 19/08/2026 02:00

Yes, double standards. Which means that Arday was “highly qualified” does it? Because another person did the same?

The fact that Cambridge dismissed the concerns only reinforces the problem. He was only “highly qualified” because plagiarism was taken seriously.

Even with the PhD, what makes him “highly qualified”? If the PhD hasn’t been awarded as it shouldn’t, would he have still be “highly qualified”?

Highly qualified in what, exactly?

Problem is with your complete ignorance of this issue (let alone the ability to understand it) is there are different violations of plagiarism between the two cases (one being significantly worse) AND even if there wasn'y why did we hear nothing about the white guy where there was a huuuge media witch hunt for the black guy?

But I'm lovin' JKR exposing her true colours on this one just quietly. Usually she's more careful to hide it. Its another example of her penchant for harmful stereotyping & by extension far right alignment.

I wouldn't be surprised if she didn’t give two shits about trans people & their 'destruction of women's rights'. They, as always are just a means to a far right bigoted end.

Can you explain why a different plagiarism case means that Arday was “highly qualified”?

harmful stereotyping & by extension far right alignment.

So anyone who perpetuates harmful stereotypes is by extension “far right”?

So men who think they are women based on the harmful stereotypes of clothes, hair, interests then?

Good to know 👍

Can you explain why a different plagiarism case means

Already did:

"Cambridge investigated Arday for plagiarism via an independent university when the initial allegations were made & found he did not meet the standard for academic plagiarism because all he did was fail to cite a some paragraphs of another writer but did cite the same writer in other paragraphs in his PHD so it was considered just a poor citation error which happens often & isn't a hanging offence as opposed to another white professor there who tried to pass off the work of a student as his own & was found guilty by Cambridge….kept his job as well as it wasn't a news story let alone a an archaeological dig into his past."

Liverpool John Moores University—which originally awarded his PhD—along with the University of Cambridge conducted reviews & analyses regarding the academic work & he was cleared years ago. Penalties depend on the severity and context of the omission.

“highly qualified”?

As in he was already a professor at the university of Glasgow when he applied for Cambridge.

Again, why aren't other white professors who have done worse not under the same media scrutiny is the point.

No one is calling all trans people predators. What we are saying is that any male who enters a female only intimate single sex space, is by definition a predator. Regardless of what that male wears or how that male identifies.

"That if this was a white academic, then none of the vilification which he endured would have come his way. To provide evidence of this one only has to look at the recent case of William O’Reilly who is also a Cambridge professor, and was also accused of plagiarism having lifted something like 12 pages of his student’s works into his own, which he then published under his own name (Olsson, 2024). Yet, what is most interesting about the O’Reilly case is not so much that he was exonerated after an investigation. It was the facts that there was no media outcry. There was no investigation by the Right-Wing press into his background, into his history or his family. There were plenty of stones left unturned as this man moved back into his position at Cambridge"

We've done this. If you are going the use of typical behaviours as a benchmark for stereotyping as in typical female presentation you can hardly say that using typical behaviours for males is any different.

It works both ways.

What “typical behaviours for males” are you talking about. You keep saying “we’ve done this” but I’m not sure you’ve ‘done’ anything.

I’m not on Twitter, so I had to go to other media to find out what she said. Turns out, unsurprisingly, she appears to be a better person than either @TransParentlyAnnoyed or @Northernlightsss

She went on to criticise those looking to politicise Professor Arday's death, saying: "Attempting to reduce this tragedy to a simplistic narrative that supports the commentator's political viewpoint is unlikely to stop this happening again, which I'd have thought should be a compassionate, reasonable society's first concern."

And yet she reduced this story of witch hunting a black academic to his 'fabulism'.

Which conveniently fits perfectly with her own particular political viewpoint in a thread about Arday.

@tedrigby As @HJoyceGender so rightly said, the last to relinquish gender identity ideology will be the parents who enabled or cheered on their own children's irrevocable surgeries and hormone treatments. Close behind will be those who made careers out...

Not going over the same old ground already repeated on this thread. You either haven't read it, can't remember or are incapable of understanding it.

You're not getting it. The media interest in Arday's personal life only came under media scrutiny later because he was selectively singled out for plagiarism to begin with for racial reasons. Had he not been singled out for plagiarism none of this would have come to light.

He was not 'singled out' for plagiarism. He was held to account for plagiarism. You seem to think that because he was black, he should have been given a free pass.

All of this would make any person look like a sociopath.

Geezo.

The poor guy was desperate for someone to find him out and tell him to stop, is my guess. That looks clearly pathological.

Compulsive chasing of the impossible, absurd declarations, using identity as leverage to claim victim points.

It is sad. Nobody who isn't deeply troubled would do all this.

Yet at the same time, it's not actions without consequences, and his own issues don't mean he is harmless or without impact on others.

The point is white people aren't held to the same account for plagiarism by a media feeding frenzy.

Its really very simple.
