Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Uh huh just like Trump was about Mexicans?

Prisons have what's called individual 'risk assessment' policy. They are responsible for housing prisoners in manner that doesn't compromise safety & they can get sued if they don't. IE low security v high security. Non dangerous V dangerous etc. In other words its up to the prison to consider all relevant risks when assessing prisoners.

Same with immigration in terms of risk assessment. So there's no need to smear a whole group because some may pose a risk because we as a society have advanced to a point where we can mitigate risks by policy procedures rather than stereotyping. That's how a civilised society works.

The parallel here, if any exists, isn’t Mexicans=transwomen, it’s Mexicans=men. That is, “this group represents a threat, even if some of them are good people”. If you want to use this convoluted example to accuse JKR of misandry go ahead, you won’t be the first, but it doesn’t demonstrate transphobia.

This thread is about JKR's transphobia AND you aren't going to escape from being exposed that easy.

Now don't be shy start the thread. Don't worry I'm sure I won't be able to prove natal males who look like females would never be at risk in a mens prison.

Do you even listen to yourselves? Its embarrassing levels of cope.

Edited

I’m no entirely sure what you mean by “natal males who look like females”, but if you mean transwomen, no-one has claimed they are never at risk. Any more than they would claim that gay men, ND men, men with learning disabilities etc are never at risk.

Prisons have well-established protocols for managing vulnerable prisoners within the male estate. The serious problems there are with its efficiency point to wider issues with that estate. They don’t point to a reason to house male prisoners within female prisoners.

No one is going to meet your definition of transphobic because you just keep saying 'that's not transphobic' to every piece of evidence presented. If you don't understand that a statement like "trans women are men" is transphobic then you're never going to accept anything is transphobia.

You're free to be a transphobe but why not just own it?

Well 'transwomen are men' is just the truth, isn't it?

So the truth is transphobic, according to you?

You need to take that up with Mother Nature. Not JKR. It's not her fault.

The data shows trans women are substantially more likely to be abused than the cis population in prisons.

The data shows trans women are substantially more likely to be abused than the cis population in prisons.

The data shows nonces are substantially more likely to be abused than the rest of the population in male prisons. By your logic we should therefore move all male sex offenders to female prisons so they get an easier life.

I'm pretty sure I recognise the posting style. Rude, condescending, mansplainy and creepy as fuck. He's been trolling this board for a while now. I'm not in the least surprised he's thrown in some porn. It was only a matter of time.
Best ignored really. Everything he posts is utter bollocks anyway.

He's been trolling this board for a while now.

I think it's been around a year. The twat needs a new hobby.

Interestingly I'm currently in a country where there are significant numbers of kathoey.

All treated as a normal part of everyday society, working openly in mainstream jobs like retail, corporate offices, banks, and healthcare, as well as the entertainment and beauty sectors. Treated in a kind and accepting way. Really nice to see.

They don't use women's facilities though. They know they're not women, as does everyone else. I've witnessed several happily going into the men's and noone bats an eyelid.
They are almost exclusively extremely beautiful, but still obviously male.

Not sure why this can't be the case in the UK.

Maybe people here are a little more progressive?
I think we need to do better in the UK.
We're clearly way behind the times.

If men are unsafe, because of the actions of other men, in men's spaces - why would that be women's problem to solve?

Stop treating women as if they only exist to be men's support animals. It's disgusting.

The 'trans' debacle as we know it is a product of a Western political ideology, so it doesn't surprise me that men posing as women are dealt with in different ways in countries outside the west.

I'm betting the 'kathoey community' is a lot less inclined to campaign to force themselves into single sex spaces, or to push they're agenda on children in school's, or target vulnerable children and shove them on a medical pathway to mutilation and sterilisation.
We'll only achieve this 'Utopian' state in the UK if the 'trans' community here learns from the kathoey community there.

Absolutely!

It's genuinely lovely to see a variety of gender non conforming people accepted, welcomed, and able to live their lives without judgement or being ostracised.
They literally are just "going about their lives and peeing in peace"
And looking fabulous while doing it.

This is true gender non-conforming acceptance.
Wonderful ❤️

It’s such a weird take. I’m assuming (but honestly at this stage, who knows) the argument is:- men watch porn featuring transwomen, therefore men fancy transwomen, therefore transwomen shouldn’t be in male prisons. However, research has shown that around one in five straight men watch gay porn therefore:- straight men watch porn featuring gay men, therefore straight men fancy gay men, therefore gay men shouldn’t be in male prisons. And that’s before we factor in gay and bisexual prisoners and their porn-viewing habits, which is apparently according to @Northernlightsss how we should formulate prison admissions policies now.

Gender as in average/typical sexed behaviours that are influenced by hormones genes, evolutionary pressures & cultural expectations. Examples like a 'butch' female or 'effeminate' male who might personally associate more with the opposite sex identity wise in terms of typical behaviours.

Original quote "gender is also real that has very definite and measurable materially real causes and consequences as in biological (hormonal, genetic, evolutionary) & environmental influences."

I asked about the science, which wasn't forthcoming sadly but nonetheless the answer you kindly gave was interesting.

I summarise as "people react to the society around them including stereotypical expectations based on the sex of their body"

And there have always been people who go against the grain in this as in every other aspect of social expectations and pressure. The essential tension between conformance to perceived norms and doing and being the way you want to be is ever present in all aspects of life.

Big G Gender is the incoming noise from society and little g gender is your personal feelings about that. So everybody encounters big G gender but not everybody has to care that much about little g gender. You can just ignore it completely - might be the best play for a lot of people, a lot of the time.

You're free to be a transphobe but why not just own it?

Do you really not think that there's a significant difference, and therefore should be a different word, between

  • actual transphobia - physical or verbal attacks and hatred, refusing to give someone a job, rent them a home or an airbnb, serve them in a shop, restaurant or bar, or allow them access to a (mixed sex) gym or swimming pool on the grounds of being trans - which is real transphobia and is bad
  • upholding everyone's right to dress, present and call themselves whatever they want, but maintain that single-sex facilities are single-sex no matter how someone of the opposite sex may dress, present ot call themself and therefore requiring that people use separate unisex facilities if they aren't comfortable with using the facilities for their material and immutable sex.

The latter has no hatred, no phobia. It is not rational for you to define "failure to share my beliefs" as transphobia and continuing to do so cheapens the word and makes it more difficult to identify and fight against the real kind.

"Every piece of evidence presented" so far has been merely the "failure to share my beliefs" kind but your statement that this means "you're never going to accept anything is transphobia" shows a startling naivety about the existence of the former kind (which is thankfully quite low as we are quite a tolerant country, although it does exist and must be eliminated, there is no "acceptable" incidence rate)

Seethlaw · 16/08/2026 11:31

The writings of young trans men reveal a group of notably sensitive and clever people. The more of their accounts of gender dysphoria I’ve read, with their insightful descriptions of anxiety, dissociation, eating disorders, self-harm and self-hatred,

I want to be very clear here: I know transition will be a solution for some gender dysphoric people

in addition to a few younger people, who were all adorable, I happen to know a self-described transsexual woman who’s older than I am and wonderful. Although she’s open about her past as a gay man, I’ve always found it hard to think of her as anything other than a woman, and I believe (and certainly hope) she’s completely happy to have transitioned.

If you could come inside my head and understand what I feel when I read about a trans woman dying at the hands of a violent man, you’d find solidarity and kinship. I have a visceral sense of the terror in which those trans women will have spent their last seconds on earth, because I too have known moments of blind fear when I realised that the only thing keeping me alive was the shaky self-restraint of my attacker.

I believe the majority of trans-identified people not only pose zero threat to others, but are vulnerable for all the reasons I’ve outlined. Trans people need and deserve protection. Like women, they’re most likely to be killed by sexual partners. Trans women who work in the sex industry, particularly trans women of colour, are at particular risk.

I want trans women to be safe.

So very transphobic.

Believing that transwomen are women is an article of faith. When someone declares that ‘transwomen are men’ they are engaging in behaviour no different from a person who says “there is no god”. If you are the type of person who thinks that saying that god doesn’t exist constitutes some form of anti-religious bigotry in itself, then your position, of thinking that saying “transwomen are men” is transphobia, would have a degree of consistency. Is that what you think?

If transwomen weren't men, there would be no need for the word "trans" in the first place. It's precisely because they are men, that they can be transwomen. Women can't be transwomen; only men can.

Helleofabore · 16/08/2026 11:49

Apparently, referencing how safeguarding principles work, in that all male people are excluded, is calling all male people with transgender identities predators. Even though she didn’t say that. Even though logic and safeguarding principles must be transphobic too if that discussion is transphobic.

This is the degree of twisting that has been done over the years by some people, across the internet, to portray JK Rowling as transphobic.

It is the same argument we hear from MRAs. The ‘you say all male people are predators when you say female people need protections and safeguarding’.

SqueakyDinosaur · 16/08/2026 11:54

Anything other than instant, unquestioning agreement with everything any trans person or ally says, thinks and believes is transphobia. We've seen this very clearly in various ETs, most recently the Samantha Tempest one.

Here is the same argument appearing in a discussion with two male people.

This discussion is enlightening in so many ways. Including the need for men to control the language women use to describe their uniqueness, just to be able to force themselves into that language. Misogyny writ large.

Just to point out, the clip is the latest from Cox and Madison.

And is the one where women are told they are crazy for using the term ‘biological sex’. From a male person who has rejected his biological sex and demands that female people stop considering him as being male. Because apparently a shedload of extreme body modification should make any difference in whether we consider him male or not.
