Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Also, I’m intrigued why that would be the case? Why would there be a difference with men who identify as men in female prisons, and not when the same men get released after a laughably short sentence and use women’s spaces?

They are a woman according to them just like self identified jew, Christian, Muslim etc is.

so it's a religion, a magical belief, and we're all forced to play along? unlike how we don't have to go along with those religions.

Helleofabore · 16/08/2026 03:18

Are we to back to discussing that some personality traits and behaviours are more commonly found but not exclusively found in one sex class of human? Making those unreliable criteria for categorising human sex classes?

Not only that, are we also to expect the evidence that would be linked up would be to studies where those personality traits are collated from self - reporting surveys that cannot control for aspirational attributes vs observable personality traits that are unchanged over a lifetime?

Howse that evidence work again?

Many countries in Europe, Scandinavia, Asia, Canada & Australian & half US states don't have bathroom bans on trans women or any ground swell interest in changing them.

In the UK, single sex toilets are designed to be used by men or women, not both at the same time. There is different designs for toilets that anyone can use.

If anyone can use single sex toilets, they are no longer fit for purpose. Neither men nor womens needs are met.

It doesnt matter if some users dont care, they arent responsible for providing services and following regulations.

Northernlightsss · 16/08/2026 02:47

Uh huh just like Trump was about Mexicans?

Prisons have what's called individual 'risk assessment' policy. They are responsible for housing prisoners in manner that doesn't compromise safety & they can get sued if they don't. IE low security v high security. Non dangerous V dangerous etc. In other words its up to the prison to consider all relevant risks when assessing prisoners.

Same with immigration in terms of risk assessment. So there's no need to smear a whole group because some may pose a risk because we as a society have advanced to a point where we can mitigate risks by policy procedures rather than stereotyping. That's how a civilised society works.

well, as it happens, the prisons aren't doing that. they are following gender ideology which says these violent, dangerous men are women if they say they are. i mean, they are literally men here. we're talking about putting men with women, and these women are being traumatized...

this is honestly such a silly conversation, with all these diversions and whatabouts when the topic at hand is super simple. men are being housed with women because they can claim to be women under what you yourself termed a belief like christianity.

Northernlightsss · 16/08/2026 03:20

Helleofabore · 16/08/2026 03:05

Just because instances of the stereotypical behaviour exist in individuals doesn't mean it's reflective of the group. And that is the issue here: Misrepresentation of the group as delusional & predatory just like it is to misrepresent women as a fixed set of behaviours. And no amount of disclaimers about not believing trans people are not dangerous is going to alter the fact JKR is speaking out of both sides of her mouth.

Except for the purpose of safeguarding principles where provisions are segregated by sex, every member of the sex class is treated equally.

If the risk of one group of people, (male
people), causing harm to the other group of people (female people), have been found to be higher than the risk between the risk associated within other members of the group to be protected (female people) then all that high group are treated the same way. That is the basis for legitimate discrimination.

All male people are treated as if they are predatory and are excluded from female single sex provisions. Because historically male people as a group have shown they have a higher risk profile of causing harm to female people. The statistics have consistently shown that male people with transgender identities in the UK do not have the same risk profile as a sub-group as female people in the general population of the UK. The sub group’s risk profile fits within the range of male risk.

The point that JK Rowling is referring to is that general safeguarding principle. That all male people have to be treated as the same risk.

As she points out, no sub group of male person can be given special treatment over the age of about 8-10 years old for safeguarding principles to work as they should. Because if you allow one male person into the provision, by that action, you have to allow them all in. There is no case by case access solution for provision use that allows some group members access and excludes others that is workable. Therefore no special sub groups should be allowed access outside of the exception for children.

Again, the writer seems to ignore basic safeguarding principles and instead uses the quote to make a bad faith interpretation about what JK Rowling wrote.

They also then used a false and dishonest generalisation to attempt to portray a group of male people as presenting no risk to female people. The writer accuses JK Rowling of using an absolutist tactic of accusing all male people with a transgender identity of being predators, while the writer does the same thing in the other direction.

They do this by not acknowledging that there are some male people who are predators. Even among those with transgender identities. The writer is dishonestly attempting to portray a group of male people as being no risk at all to female people as a group or potentially as individuals, which is so obviously not true and easily disproven.

By demonising JK Rowling for pointing out how safeguarding works effectively the way they have, the writer is also then demonising any other person who makes the same point.

It is not transphobic to discuss safeguarding principles, how they work, how they have been developed and who is included the group that is excluded and why. It is harmful to female people though to demonise any female person having that discussion. Obviously, anything that potentially reduces the protection available to female people is harmful to female people.

None of this addresses the inconsistency in the position of claiming gender stereotypes are wrong but trans stereotypes are right because by your logic the evidence of typical behaviours justifies the stereotype.

You can't have it both ways.

Look, prisons like all other human pursuits aren't infallible so I can understand that because they are dealing with criminals who can slip between the security cracks might require separate housing for trans women from women to be on the safe side.

But trans women with men? No. That is a proven risk so gender does come into it.

There are other groups of vulnerable male people who are housed within male prisons. Why should this group of male people be treated differently to the other groups of vulnerable males who have provisions within the male prison estate.

How would the men know other men's inner truth?

The data shows trans women are substantially more likely to be abused than the cis population in prisons.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2026 03:26

Even if true, that doesn’t mean that those men should be classed as women. They are just vulnerable men. There are other vulnerable groups of men so they can have a vulnerable men facility, no?

You don’t seem to be able to address the inconsistencies in the article you posted a link to at all. Including the missing sentences within quotes.

However, as usual, you have shown you don’t understand safeguarding principles and consent. A risk profile for a group is based of definable category boundaries of course and not ‘stereotypes’.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2026 03:28

You don’t really understand the concept of safeguarding, do you @Northernlightsss?

None of that changes the substance of JKR's claims about predators or tomboys & you know that so you can stop using that as distraction from what you can't account for & that's the inconsistency in your position.

And when you present this data, please make sure it includes the breakdown of the major other vulnerable groups as a comparison and not just all male prisoners who are not transgender rolled into one comparator segment.

Nice try but this thread is about JKR's transphobia. As I said you're welcome to use google & if you can't cope with that start another thread on prison data because I'm not going to allow you use quibbling about data to distract from the inconsistency in your position which you are obviously sea lioning your little heart out to run away from.

I mean, if JKR is transphobic, and that protects women and girls, go transphobia!!!! Go JKR!! Let's TERF all day and TERF all night.

You don’t understand safeguarding or consent.

You cannot acknowledge the flaws in the article that you posted.

You and the writer of the article have used bad faith interpretations of what she said to portray her words as he calling all male people with a transgender identity ‘predators’. I don’t believe it worked the first time we saw that argument and it still fails now.

That ’substance’ you and this writer have tried to make work, doesn’t in the full context of the essay. Not even within the paragraph that the snipped quote came from. It can be said that that ’substance’ is not there at all.

Appreciate your honesty which incidentally is a feature not a bug of the New Right where they will only be too happy to shout from the roof tops that they will do everything fair & unfair to get their way including claiming immigrants eat cats & dogs when they know they don't. See JD Vance.

Problem is, the 'normies' as in the silent majority rightly don't care for such unprincipled tactics because they know that they could be next.

So knock yourself out.

JKR doesn't believe, has never said and does not represent all trans people as delusional and predatory.

It's just as much a stereotype that no trans people are dangerous, as that all trans people are dangerous.

I think that’s a really good point. The reason women here advance cases of sexually predatory men who identify as women, is because the trans lobby denies that such men exist. As you say, it’s as much of a stereotype that these men are never predatory as it is that they are always predatory.
