Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Right! Isn't a petard an explosive of some kind?

Yes, it hoists you into the air when it explodes

Tzika · 14/08/2026 21:36

If you want something she said how about the time she responds to a call for boycott by suggesting someone kill their dog?

Oh dear Tzika. Methinks you skipped the classes at school regarding sarcasm, wit, irony etc.

I await more examples of "repugnant garbage" said by JKR if you have any because that one........wasnt.

Do you not understand sarcasm? Have you never encountered it before?
I struggle to believe even a TRA is THIS stupid. It HAS to be an act.

they do pretend men are literally women if they just say they are, and women are literally men by just saying it, so. i wouldn't put much past them...

Also, it's hoist, not hung.

Imagine being so butt hurt by having to face the obvious inconsistency in a position thinks using pedantry to wish away the butt hurt will work?

And this trivial babbling pedantry over words is supposed to pass for a serious women's rights movement today? No wonder young women are repudiating feminism as irrelevant in droves.

NotBadConsidering · 15/08/2026 03:18

This trivial babbling pedantry over words is supposed to pass for “transphobia”?

FIFY.

Helleofabore · 15/08/2026 03:35

Isn’t the discussion about ‘words’ entirely relevant to what JKR has been accused of?

Surely anyone making claims about how hateful she is would be very conscious of what she said/wrote and the correct interpretation of what she said/wrote.

Being pedantic about what words have been written and what is being communicated is rather important to the topic under discussion.

Don't forget the bunnies.

A tiny rabbit rescue with a policy of if you follow us we will follow back on Twix.

And they were attacked, reported to the charity commission and forced to have emergency meetings.

Again, you can't understand something you don't think is 'real'.

Having a trans identity is as real as any other emergent phenomenon that is observed within the rich and diverse fabric of humanity. Without a physiological cause or objectively measurable indicator it has no material reality but that doesn't make it unreal or an invalid experience. There is no problem with transness/gender diversity ("gender reassignment" is a clumsy wording that could do with improvement next time legislation is being updated) being upheld in law as a protected characteristic alongside all the other protected characteristics, some of which equally have no physiological cause or objectively measurable indicator. There is no hierarchy of protected characteristics and having one protected characteristics does not exempt anyone from measures that exist to protect people under another protected characteristic.

Transphobia is definitely real. Trans people have been violently attacked and discriminated against for living outside the constraints of the sexist cultural expectations for their birth sex. This is wrong and feminists are 100% allies in condemning this transphobia. Saying that men cannot become women and vice-versa is not transphobia because sex is also real, it is a protected characteristic and it does have very definite and measurable materially real causes and consequences, and cannot be changed for any individual.

JKR's 'transphobia' could - theoretically - exist and could therefore theoretically be proven but would need to be evidenced with actual quotes or witnessed accounts of genuine transphobia. Proof that she doesn't believe that male people can become female people does not achieve this because it is factual reality not transphobia. Proof that she can get annoyed and use wit and sarcasm against the torrent of abuse she suffers for failing to believe that male people can become female people does not achieve this because it is a perfectly normal and quite restrained response to being attacked, not transphobia.

Quite.

Backwardsbinn · 15/08/2026 07:25

“Trans people have been violently attacked and discriminated against for living outside the constraints of the sexist cultural expectations for their birth sex.”

You see what I think is a pile of nonsense about the whole gender biology is notion that there are any ‘sexist cultural expectations for their birth sex’. My child has short hair and dresses and looks like a boy. She’s a girl. And yet she CONSTANTLY gets asked if she’s trans or NB. It enrages her as she thinks gender ideology is nonsense. Why can’t - in the modern world - a girl just have short hair without someone claiming that if they do, they must be trans? Are we SO backwards that gender stereotypes are STILL a thing? Gender ideology is so regressive, dragging us back to the notion that you ‘can’t’ be a girl if you choose to have short hair and wear boys clothes. It needs to get in the sea immediately.

Very much so, Im afraid. I think a lot of it worsened in recent decades, too. Toys being coded blue and pink, ditto kids clothing.

Imagine continuing to spout a load of bollocks instead of actually proving your point. As previously mentioned by various PP’s, it should be easy.

As stated repeatedly, JKR's transphobia is the use of harmful stereotypes to smear & effectively invalidate trans identity.

And trans people are not suggesting sex is not real. What they are saying is gender is also real that has very definite and measurable materially real causes and consequences as in biological (hormonal, genetic, evolutionary) & environmental influences. Denying the existence of very real causes of gender identification is also a form of transphobia.

What ‘harmful stereotypes does JK Rowling use to smear? Do you have any examples?

Its in the quote up thread I linked twice.

As stated repeatedly, JKR's transphobia is the use of harmful stereotypes to smear & effectively invalidate trans identity.

It should be very easy to find examples of “the world’s biggest transphobe” doing this. Do you have any?

SidewaysOtter · 15/08/2026 08:03

So why don’t you post some direct quotes, rather than someone else’s interpretation of what she’s said?

Can you read? The direct quotes are in the piece. The author clearly explains how these are harmful stereotypes.

How does what you’ve posted before demonstrate JKR’s “use of harmful stereotypes”?

Quote just one line from her.

To answer your question, @Backwardsbinn: a symbol of hate for people to demonstrate their virtue against. Only then can they distract from the absolute batshittery they are suggesting we adopt as reality.

Many, many trans people think that 'transition' means changing biological sex.

I am asking sincerely and in a spirit of good natured conciliation:

It can be hard when one feels that one is in an adverserial position that to agree to anything would be a climbdown.

Are you refusing to post a quote out of principle, just because people are asking you to do so? The trouble is that it comes across as you not posting a quote because you are incapable of doing so.

BackToLurk · 15/08/2026 08:13

Northernlightsss · 15/08/2026 08:02

Its in the quote up thread I linked twice.

This is one of your examples of a stereotype.

"In an attempt to demonstrate her understanding of where transgender people are coming from, Rowling even says she too might have considered transitioning had the option been available to her as a teenager. “The allure of escaping womanhood would have been huge, “ she writes. “If I’d found community and sympathy online that I couldn’t find in my immediate environment, I believe I could have been persuaded to turn myself into the son my father had openly said he’d have preferred.”

That’s not a stereotype. That’s someone articulating a view about why young women may transition and relating it to her own life. You may not agree with her view, but different views do not constitute hate or a phobia.

SidewaysOtter · 15/08/2026 08:13

You are really very rude which makes me think you don’t have a credible argument.

And yes, I did read that word salad. The quotes still don’t demonstrate transphobia.
