Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

Please feel free to give direct examples of the "hateful pernicious shit which she spews".
Direct quotes from JKR will do, not "he said, she said".
Off you go, shouldn't take long should it?

I remember on this board someone was asked this and the "proof" they offered was an article written about JKR by someone else that "paraphrased" her supposed transphobic rhetoric. Not one direct quote in the entire thing. Um... ok then.

I think that's about as good as it gets

CassOle · 14/08/2026 23:18

If a TRA had found an actual quote and managed to claim their £5 (I think it was much more than that in reality), we would never have heard the end of it.

I offered you a chance to provide what it is you disagree with regarding JKR (and the majority posters on here) views, but you said “no thanks”. It was a perfect opportunity to give the other POV but you didn’t fancy it so I’m puzzled as to why you are mentioning it now. And still no proof of her transphobia I see.

And it’s not a trans obsession, it’s a male in female singie sex spaces obsession. I don’t understand why every woman isn’t obsessed with it.

And still no proof of her transphobia I see.

That's because its not possible to satisfy impossible standards. The evidence of JKR's trans phobia has been made crystal clear multiple times by multiple posters but by virtue of an ideology being defined as 'gender critical' as in gender doesn't exist in any meaningful way other than an imposed set of stereotypes its not possible to explain a phobia for something that is 'non existent'.

A more interesting question might be why the phobia/irrational fear about gender? I suspect there's a deep rooted resentment particularly towards feminine expression since most of the 'faking it' ire is directed towards trans women & not trans men.

Cue, non sequitur howls of 'but but but men are more dangerous so our phobia is justified'

You can't make this incoherence up….except in a cult.

I think it was a million, and yes, the crowing would have been heard from Neptune.

And yet crickets.

How many stereotypes? Let me count the ways….

"In an attempt to demonstrate her understanding of where transgender people are coming from, Rowling even says she too might have considered transitioning had the option been available to her as a teenager. “The allure of escaping womanhood would have been huge, “ she writes. “If I’d found community and sympathy online that I couldn’t find in my immediate environment, I believe I could have been persuaded to turn myself into the son my father had openly said he’d have preferred.”

The belief that gender identity is a phase, a choice, or something that is influenced by other people is a stereotype that minimizes the struggles of anyone who experiences gender dysphoria. Transitioning isn’t easy but Rowling seems to be saying people can choose to transition on a whim simply because they think it’s more convenient to be one gender than another.

In her essay, Rowling goes on to reveal that she is a domestic and sexual abuse survivor and those experiences have made her even more focused on biology, “out of solidarity with the huge numbers of women who have histories like mine, who’ve been slurred as bigots for having concerns around single-sex spaces.”

Referring to the debate around public washrooms in particular, Rowling claims she’s concerned for the safety of cis women and girls. “When you throw open the doors of bathrooms and changing rooms to any man who believes or feels he’s a woman—and, as I’ve said, gender confirmation certificates may now be granted without any need for surgery or hormones—then you open the door to any and all men who wish to come inside.”

Throughout her essay, Rowling talks about how easy it is for a biological man to become a woman in the eyes of the law and how potentially dangerous that could be for cis women. The fear that a large number of transgender women are just men who want to be able to use women-only spaces unchecked is a harmful stereotype that paints trans people as predators instead of just human beings who want to live their lives.

In her attempt to defend herself against the TERF label, Rowling just ended up providing more solid evidence that she is one. She works hard to disguise her views as feminism and genuine concern for the wellbeing of all women, but relies heavily on a number unsubstantiated opinions about trans people that the community has been fighting against for years. Rowling sees herself as highly educated on transgender issues but she still fails to see how her views—and her insistence on using her huge platform to promote them—are hurting transgender people."

J.K. Rowling's History Of Transphobia - IN Magazine

The world is going through a lot right now. With a global pandemic still in full swing and Black Lives Matter protests happening all over the world every day, J.K. Rowling thought it would be a good time to remind everyone that she’s still transphobic....

I’m not interested in a load of word salad bollocks explaining why someone thinks she is transphobic. I want a direct transphobic quote by JKR. From anyone who can provide it.

Where is the transphobia?

CassOle · 14/08/2026 23:28

A direct quote! How uncooth! Can't we just take a reliable source, such as Erin in the morning's word for it?

DialSquare · 14/08/2026 23:28

Northernlightsss · 14/08/2026 23:28

Like I said. Impossible standards.

Nope. If she is transphobic, it should be easy to prove. So prove it.

Northernlightsss · 14/08/2026 23:29

DialSquare · 14/08/2026 23:28

Where is the transphobia?

Again, you can't understand something you don't think is 'real'.

Actually a direct link to the post in question would be good.

Will never happen as it doesn't exist.

As you say, someone's opinion of an essay is a secondary source at best and isn't evidence.

NotBadConsidering · 14/08/2026 23:29

Northernlightsss · 14/08/2026 23:28

Like I said. Impossible standards.

Yes, it is impossible for people to explain how they jumped from a reasonable, personal and fact-based essay to “transphobia”.

The power of bias in one’s own inferences.

How is asking for a direct quote 'impossible standards'? I thought it was more commonly known as proof.

You'd think for the peoples whose supposed main grievance is harmful stereotypes they would be able to make the connection immediately. That's how you know this ideology is nothing but a load of steaming incoherent resentment.

Hung by their own petard comes to mind.

Steaming incoherent resentment does seem to be the motivation for TRAs, you are correct there.

Still no proof to offer?
