Why do some people view JK Rowling as transphobic?

1000 replies

Backwardsbinn · 13/08/2026 20:33

Where do people get the idea that JK Rowling is transphobic from? Where? I’m having this argument with an acquaintance who tells me she’s the most transphobic person on earth but cannot point to one single thing that she’s done or said that’s transphobic. Is this the widest held totally bullshit view ever?

@KinderOfKinder

Generally speaking, the conflict between the fundamental, inalienable rights of women to single sex spaces, and the fundamental, inalienable rights of trans people to live - and be identified - as they are is a circle you cannot square*

Leaving aside the matter of whether anyone has the inalienable right to live as they are. If you accept both that single sex spaces are a right and also that no one changes sex, then there is no conflict.

TheKeatingFive · 14/08/2026 14:07

It's all very interesting (not to mention terrifying)

Basically the 'master narrative' gets created amd communicated.

And people swallow that whole, without doing any sense checking themselves.

Then, if challenged, they find themselves making up all kinds of nonsense because they can't cope with the cognitive dissonance of being wrong.

But how is the master narrative created to begin with? And by whom?

But

Exactly

There is no conflict at all here. At its heart, it's very simple and straightforward.

Whatever provisions there needs to be made for trans identifying men, there is no justification at all for involving women's single sex spaces.

Is that why they carry pads or tampons because they’re women?

Of course it is.
I wish I understood the thrill they get out of them. As one of those boring old fashioned biological women, whose periods this year have gone utterly haywire I loath having to carry the fuckers around with me all the time "just in case".

Obviously I'm just not woman-ing correctly.

TheKeatingFive · 14/08/2026 14:14

The breakdown in logic is as follows.

Trans identifying men are a subset of men. Not women.

There should never have been any suggestion that these people be treated/have the rights of the sex they are not. Because that is entirely without justification.

Take that demand out of the equation and all complications fade away.

That is the absolute key point. Sympathise or don’t, what provisions trans identified males say they need has zero to do with women’s rights.

Indeed, that’s why I asked our impartial friend the question I did.

I have my period at the moment and I’m doing it “all wrong” as I don’t enjoy it. I’m obviously not woman-ing correctly either!

"Maybe I just need a better understanding of quantum physics?"

Frankly, I'd settle for people having a basic understanding of biology. 🙄

I think you will find that 99.9% of posters on here have a very good understanding of biology.

How many trans identifying women have become pregnant? Let me think…

How did they manage that? Do they have a “magic” uterus and ovaries?

Trans identified women are biological women who identify as men, so yes.

Its almost like they want the language to be confusing, to mame their demands look reasonable...

KinderOfKinder · 14/08/2026 10:02

Absolutely spot on.

I'm not entirely convinced JKR's behaviour goes into actual, verifiable phobia, but the (abundant) evidence is very, very clear; she constantly and consistently (and, quite possibly, pathologically) sneers at minority groups and uses her considerable fame and reach to punch downward. Those are not qualities that a moral, decent human being should ever exhibit.

That she also, genuinely, does spend some of her enormous wealth in supporting women's groups - which is to be rightly lauded - does not, in my view and the view of many, absolve her from accountability of the hateful, pernicious shit she spews.

How is she punching downward if she is not a moral decent human being?

In my view, she is sometimes a bit unkind, using her wit to skewer hypocrites like Wallace, Weddell and Willoughby. Why does she have to be a plaster saint, though? She's human like the rest of us, isn't she, and just possibly permitted to be annoyed or frustrated at times?

It’s fine as pp said, the confusing language is a feature rather then a bug of gender identity ideology.

A picture paints a thousand instances of transphobia...

I see all extremists as fundamentally absurd.

But the fact you've fixated on your misunderstanding of my quoted post and, via a process of mental gymnastics, concluded I see one of your tribes as more absurd than the other is as revealing as it is fascinating.

And, also, part of the problem.

Generally speaking, the conflict between the fundamental, inalienable rights of women to single sex spaces, and the fundamental, inalienable rights of trans people to live - and be identified - as they are* is a circle you cannot square.

*And yes, I am fully aware that that statement is triggering to certain types of poster who I can even now hear spluttering over their tea and preparing to engage in keyboard warfare. Such people neither bother nor interest me.

This "keyboard warrior" is just a distressed parent who has lost his son to an ideology which would encourage him to disrupt his endocrine system and, taken to its logical conclusion, get his penis inverted with serious health consequences potentially including, but not limited to, urinary dysfunction. Or just cut himself off from all the people who have loved and supported him from birth. Because we disagree, or in some cases don't even disagree, with his newfound worldview.

So in what way is my son "what he is" or should I say "what she is"? When "what s/he is" is not in any way in line with the physical reality that he is male, a fact that cannot be changed. He can, potentially, become a father. He cannot in any possible future become a mother. Unless we play more linguistic games with the meanings of words that have been clear and useful for communication for centuries.

And whatever his view of himself, he will always be our son. Queer Theorists, Gender Studies academics, Judith effing Butler, Trans activists and allies, doctors and surgeons, Uncle Tom Cobbleigh and all, cannot change his sex.

Am I an extremist?

Which tweet is transphobic?

I cant share from the Twitter app but she made a post four days ago complaining about men identifying as women.

But

I asked the original question because someone on Twitter was saying how JKR was seething transphobic, so I asked for some examples, and was given ‘go educate yourself’ which I pointed out wasn’t an example, then ‘just look at her Twitter posts’ which I again pointed out wasn’t an example and ultimately he was unable to give any examples.

Are there any specific examples? In the Kalif situation she was 100% correct.

A bloke was given an Olympic gold medal for beating up women. If that’s not shocking, what is? JKR bravely called this out for what it was.

The lead of Edinburgh RCS job was a job reserved for women. A bloke applied and took the job. jKR rightly called this out.

Women gave a legal right to single biological sex spaces. JKR rightly called this out.

Are ANY of these things ‘transphobic’? Of course not!

In what way complaining? What is it about complaining about men pretending to be women that’s an issue?
