Welcome to The Bluestocking, the best (perhaps only) online women's pub. Nothing in the food or drink can harm you, everything is served by a very enthusiastic crew of gerbils, and any curious menfolk are welcome at the Staunch Ally down the road.

Agree. Severe dearth here of insects, snails, slugs and most things that birds want to eat. Hopefully, if we get the promised rain I've just seen in our forecast this may improve.

Being food for birds is not fun.

KEVIN! Put me down.

I'm not tea.

We were lucky enough to have real rain a couple of weeks ago - maybe two inches over two days - so although a lot of things are dead and I gave up on vegetables, a lot of other things will recover. It was a bit cooler here this morning, but less so now. The socks I put on this morning for the first time in weeks now seem like a mistake.

DeanElderberry · 16/08/2026 18:48

I put food out for critters, voles probably, not because I wanted to but because in the course of searching for mixed spice to put into my boiled cake I turned a pack of pumpkin seeds upside down and they spilled everywhere. So way over at the far end of the garden there should be some fat rodents.

It's been raining in Deepest Darkest Peru on and off all day.

Boy cat is still spending all night outside, and despite having a perfectly good waterproof cat house out there was sopping wet when he finally came in for breakfast.

Of course I did what was required of me : one towel on the floor to dry his paws whilst I used a second towel to rub him down. Then he demanded a treat when I'd finished as he's such a good boy.

I should point out that he trained me to do the above. I did not train him!

Finding your tribe is a big myth anyway, as you grow up you make friends from a huge range of ages and backgrounds, and the thing you need most is to be able to offer something to them. A positive personality, enough resilience not to get walked over, life skills like food preparation, and something to work at.

If she does an art foundation year maybe she should do some specialist training (on the job if necessary) in archaeological illustration and then do those few years on digs. At that stage if she returns to her original field of study she'll have the strength to survive it.

Strangely, someone suggested archeological and museum illustration as a possible career path, that she could then supplement by commissions and working on her own graphic novel (a dream she has). I might see if there are some digs in the county that she might be able to volunteer for, because this is such a great suggestion.

Long term, money in and of itself is not an issue as she will have enough money through us and fam to ensure she has that little cottage - she would only need ‘living expenses’, which was deliberately planned for because of her disability and because DH wanted all his years of graft to lead to his children being able to make passion-based career decisions rather than get trapped in the corporate world. It means that she can do contracts and/or take lower paid/part-time jobs and manage financially and hopefully cope with life and her AuDHD better without the 9-5 grind.

Her brother actually needs that regulation and routine to cope better with his AuDHD. Two more disparate auties you could not find!

I am moving in with you. Can I bring my pups? They are sick n tired of being stuck at home and only exercised in the garden when the temp drops below 23 degrees. I swear I found one of them packing a suitcase this morning.

Am i allowed to not miss the slugs? They come out onto my patio by the hundreds in the evenings when it is wetter and I then spend all evening chasing and getting my springer to ‘Leave’ and empty his mouth. He now brings them to me and drops them at my feet because he seems to think I actually want the slimy little things 🤢

I don't mind slugs as long as I don't have to come into physical contact with them. Actually that's my usual approach to most of the animal kingdom, up to and including humans.

MyrtleLion · 16/08/2026 19:27

Gosie episode shortly.

DeanElderberry · 16/08/2026 19:27

BooBoo still has the remains of his summer itch so every morning after breakfast there's a dance of me 'catching a reluctant cat' (who has been sitting in the middle of the floor and glaring at me) so that I can swab his sore patches with a mix of water and hibiscrub and then pour more water over him to cool his skin.

Tiddles thinks we're both mad.

Certainly.

Makes the housework quicker.

So tomorrow do you want to clean the fridge? Or the unit with the air fryers on?

The cat, boy again, brings the slugs in on his underbelly then comes for a snuggle. I'd be quite happy never to discover a slug crawling over me ever again!

We have accommodation covered as she can live with dad (new job based, ironically, 10mins from her campus, so has a flat almost over the road) but I do think a year to recalibrate is ideal. I just hope she doesn’t see it as step 1 in giving up. She got 45/45 distinctions in her Access Diploma last year and was so optimistic that I am gutted for her. So much of the experience of uni is based on peer group/flat mates. She does accept she may have been prickly and that her aspie presentation can be off-putting (well, that, and her arms are very very scarred from self-harming and I think she is beginning to realise that people are alarmed by these and draw conclusions).

Have just found that her generation actually seem to be the most judgemental, unforgiving and unkind. Perhaps SM driven, or covid, or some strange social phenomenon. No idea.

Or, perhaps, just not enough Tunnocks, or book-nooks, or knitting or gerbils…

Have just found that her generation actually seem to be the most judgemental, unforgiving and unkind.

And yet these are supposed to be the most accepting, most inclusive, if you can be anythng in the world, be kind, let transwomen into women's spaces people...🙄

Mr Magpie is watching Columbo. The advert breaks are full of air fresheners and holidays, prompting us to come up with a range of holiday scented air fresheners. I opened with Sicilian Lemon, and he countered with 14 Hours In A Plane. I suspect one of those might be more popular than the other.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 16/08/2026 19:48

@Boiledbeetle slugs def hitch a ride on their undercarriages - have to do a full body scan before they are allowed upstairs because I once found one on my bed. That was a drama, DH thought I was being murdered by Norman Bates.

@Magpiecomplex I actually have at times had to put my hand in Coop’s mouth to scoop them out. I actually have a bit of a phobia to them, but the fear of lungworm or whatever it is that dogs get, means I have no choice. DH has found me gagging over the sink and scrubbing hands … yuck yuck yuckety yuck, to misquote 4 weddings and a funeral…

Not at all fond of them myself, but some of the birds seem to love them. We leave the utility door open for the cat to go in and out (door not suitable for a cat flap) and occasionally one gets in and hides under the oil boiler. It means DH has to go on a slug hunt last thing at night to trap and dispose of it. 😬

Interesting - I get funeral plans, fixadent (with a weird overly cosmetically tweaked woman riding her bike with a rictus grin <shudders>) and cruise ads. 🤷🏻‍♀️
