So why was it initially reported as natural causes and then the police changed this saying new evidence has come to light?

My recollection is that initial reports were only that AW had died. Nothing about natural causes.

Ok, that's fair.

But there was certainly no initial impression given that anything untoward had happened. The impression given was that she had been found dead and then further information had come to light to suggest foul play.. The immense violence of the attack does not align with this.

Personally I don't feel that anyone was misled. I think the the police have (and rightly should have) a lot of discretion about how and when information about the nature of a death is released to the public. Saying too much too early can prejudice enquiries.

Good. I think the police give out far too much information, by and large. Unless its necessary for the public to know, they should just wait til the trial to satisfy their curiosity.

Who benefits from such obscurity? Not the public.

The first info from the police was that they had opened a murder investigation.

I didn't know that actual court artists aren't allowed to draw in court!

Justice? I think it would be better served if the police spent more time investigating and less time dealing with the media. There's no public benefits in this constantly demand for information, pre trial. Its just ignorant people wanting to use someone else's tragedy as a form of entertainment.

Well you would benefit if you were arrested for something.

Or if someone killed your mother or your child and you were quite busy dealing with that and you didn’t also have to deal with levels of media that would go along with it if it wasn’t for these laws.

Pre trial reporting helps make potential witnesses aware so they come forward. Particularly important in rape cases which often turn out to involve serial rapists.
Also if there are violent attackers about the public have a right to know.

The public "right to know" needs to be balanced against the right of the victim and their family to justice. The initial report was just that Anne had died and was from her publishers. Delay gave the police time to view camera footage and interview the person who found her and others. The locals would have heard the gossip rapidly, others dont need to know immediately.

We all benefit when a violent offender is arrested promptly and the police having 24-48 hours to investigate doesnt affect a "right to know".

We dont need the full details before a trial, especially if they may prejudice a trial. We need the police getting on with the job and the offender found and locked up.

In the case of any potential conspirators, the public needs to be aware. Maybe someone 'knew' him online and can point to which groups he was in.

Of course the police may have a huge amount of information already. In the Preston Davey trial the murderers were convicted without their online activities being exposed at the trial, making it appear as if the murder was out of character. In fact they had thousands of child abuse and bestiality images on their phones. The police decided to leave any charges relating to those on file, saying it was not in the public interest to prosecute. I can imagine they were keeping them in reserve in case the murder trial failed.

Yes, you can get them in supermarkets and Sainsbury stocks them. DH buys them now and then and says they're not bad but I haven't tried any myself.
