Apparently there has only been one single complaint to English Councils about single sex spaces in 2025

I mean, I wrote about six just on my own so....

How many complaints were actually made I wonder? How have they gone missing?

I know for sure several of my complaints were never documented in official channels , just quietly killed. But I cannot of been the only complainant in England surely?

My friends son made a great point the other day when he got home from school, he said that if you're in a cubicle it really doesn't matter who is in there.

His mother and I are so proud of him and his new boyfriend.

I don't know what you mean, I'm genuinely furious that my multiple complaints about bears in the gents toilets weren't taken with the seriousness they deserve. This isn't any laughing matter, my son could have been eaten by that bear, if there had been a bear, and if he had been in those toilets at the time, and if he was speaking to me instead of ignoring all my texts warning him about bears.

Are you feeling quite alright? You seem to have drifted off into Terribleattemptatanalogyland.

Why are you having a pop at OP?

Surely if you are in a cubicle it matters a great deal who else is in there?

Wasn’t that done by the same guy that did FOIs to hospitals or some such and claimed the responses showed that there’s never been any problems reported with men in female wards.

Obviously glossing over the numerous incidents they couldn’t hide and were actually prosecuted and reported in MSM. And the refusal of many hospital trusts to even record such incidents cos it’s transphobic to even contemplate that a man who calls himself a woman has committed a crime like rape, voyeurism or indecent exposure.

A "universal toilet" with a floor to ceiling door, sound proofing, basin, sink and sanitary disposal facilities designed for one person - yes

But a cubicle is open above, has a door with gaps at the top and the bottom - and those have to be single sex only

obviously...

Hey everyone we're activists! I'm finally in a gang.

So there will be no problems with transwomen using the men's toilets then. They can use a cubicle and it doesn't matter who else is there.

Quite.

Problem solved then. Great job.

Says a boy who apparently cannot imagine, and has never heard his friends speak of, the abusive and voyeuristic things men get up to in cubicles next to those occupied by women.

You should be in there on your own.

I would think so but given pp mentioned her friend’s son was gay maybe he is into the casual sex scene? But even then I would expect some level of discernment about partners, especially if he has a boyfriend.

Me, approaching the manager of a gym: Excuse me, I’d like to make a complaint. There’s a bear in the gent’s toilets.

The Manager: Oh my goodness. Did you see this bear?

Me: No, I didn’t actually see it, I’m just worried that it’s in there.

The Manager: Well, have you checked?

Me: No, I can’t check, I’m a woman, I can’t go in there.

The Manager: OK, so what is the basis of your concern exactly?

Me: That there’s a bear in there.

The Manager: Ok. So you’re worried that there might be a bear in this toilet that you don’t use?

Me: Yes. I’m concerned about protecting men.

The Manager: Has a man told you that there’s a bear in there?

Me: No, but I know they’re just scared to speak up, so I need to do it for them.

The Manager: Ok, so you haven’t seen a bear, no one’s told you there’s a bear, you can’t check if there’s a bear, but you’re complaining that there’s a bear?

Me: Yes.

The Manager: And just to be clear, you don’t use these facilities yourself, so you’re complaining about the bear on behalf of the people that do, even though they haven’t asked you to?

Me: Yes. And if you don’t take my complaint seriously I’ll take legal action.

The Manager: Ok, I’ll send someone to check.

5 minutes later

The Manager: Ok, there is no bear, and the men in there have asked you to
please stop hanging around the door and peering in looking for bears because it’s making them uncomfortable.

Me: I’m furious this wasn't taken seriously, I’d better go and tell Mensnet about this, I’m sure they will appreciate my efforts to protect them from bears

That's brilliant! Can I have a glass of what you've been drinking?

ShyGirl32 · 03/06/2026 18:32

I tried to complain about something recently, but apparently I got the wrong email address. I got a short reply a week later along the lines “you have emailed the General Contacts and we don’t deal with any complaints. You’ll have to email someone else if you want to complain.”

No attempt to forward my complaint or provide the correct contact - and when I searched online I couldn’t find any other address to approach. I gave up!

I suspect many complaints just get ignored like mine, because our public servants don’t want complaints or frankly to have to do any actual work to help resolve public concerns, they just want a quiet life.

ShyGirl32 · 03/06/2026 18:34

Although perhaps it was the nature of my complaint coming from a “concerned about protecting single sex spaces” angle, and maybe the person running the inbox is a trans ally.

PsychoHotSauce · 03/06/2026 18:38

There's an informal policy (not just in councils) of having a wide discretion about what qualifies as a complaint. Some can be reclassified as "feedback" and never make the stats.

MagicSpring · 03/06/2026 18:49

Yes, well, the Lib Dems claimed that nobody had raised the question of males in female toilets "on the doorstep" a few years ago. To be fair, our canvasser scuttled away from the doorstep as fast as possible once I started mentioning it, possibly with fingers in his ears.

heathspeedwell · 03/06/2026 19:07

My best friend and I used to go swimming every single Monday night after work. Our council decided to be 'inclusive' and make the changing rooms unisex. One evening we were changing after swimming and heard a strange noise. A man had squeezed his head under the gap and was audibly pleasuring himself while watching us undress.

We were so shocked we just got dressed and left. We never went back. We never complained. In retrospect we're lucky he had his hands full so he wasn't filming us and uploading it to the internet.

But the point is that when women are frightened we generally just want to get away. We don't complain. We have been taught not to make a fuss. That doesn't mean that it hasn't changed out lives forever.

TheseWordsAreMine · 03/06/2026 20:33

The last time I was in my local pool with DD, getting changed in an open-ceiling cubicle in the mixed sex area, there were teenage boys recording people getting changed on their phones.

I’m going to try an explain myself without sounding condescending or mansplaining anything. I took this attitude. Of course you report things. That what I do. But that’s me. A particularly large man. I don’t go through any part of life afraid of anything, or intimidated.

I learned it’s arrogant and assumptive to think everyone thinks like that, to assume others do not go through parts of their life concerned or worried about the man walking behind them at night, or watching them from the other side of the swimming pool. Not all women. Not all men. But sometimes and it’s real.

so I don’t walk behind women at night. Or any of the other things, like ever contemplate entering single sex or frankly mixed sex spaces like toilets.

It's called non contact sexual assault.
Many victims are too shocked to report it. Or they just want to get away. Or they think they won't be believed - just like your reaction here, in fact. Way to prove a point.
