How do we address men’s violence against women as an epidemic?

AnnaQuayRules · 05/05/2026 21:58

It's not all men but it's always men and I'm fucking sick of it.

Yet another woman murdered by her ex who blew her (and himself) up with an explosive device.

I don't know what my point is really, just that I feel so sick and angry about this. The poor woman phoned 999 and, to be fair, it seems the police were on site within 5 minutes but he'd already killed her by then.

This is an epidemic but how do we address it?

Another terrible story. Her poor family. So many women with lives full of potential are lost to these men.

How much have the causes of male violence been studied and are there interventions that could take place - medical interventions, such as testosterone reduction? I know it was discussed a couple of years ago with regards to convicted sex offenders, I believe. Obviously these men shouldn’t be walking the street but the criminal justice system seems unable to cope.

We have to be allowed to name it.

Exactly. I don't care how many wonderful men there are (and I'm married to one of them and have brought up two more), the fact remains that there is an issue that no one is addressing.

Recently there have been some horrendous anti-Semitic attacks. Most people are not anti semitic but there is a sizeable minority who are. And quite rightly questions are bring asked.

But when it's women being attacked, no one in power seems to care or want to address it.

I don't think it's new and I don't think it's an epidemic in the sense that it's an upsurge.
Domestic violence has existed since forever.

We are just starting to realise the extent of it.
And the authorities are just starting to take it seriously
We still have a long way to go.

ItsJustMeMyself · 05/05/2026 22:25

My cousin and MIL are extremely verbally and physically abusive to their DHs and children and it's very, very concerning that people turn a blind eye to the abuse they inflict on others presumably because they are women.

But, I am very disturbed by light sentences for SA and murder. People often state that you get longer sentences for pirating movies than for these crimes.

AMansAManForAllThat · 05/05/2026 22:31

It seems to me that the issue is men are violent.
They are violent to women in different ways and different circumstances than their violence towards men.

It appears to be about ownership. If we could get much better teaching in schools, from the youngest ages, about agency and control it would help. It would also help with better parenting and better relationships across the board.

Just six posts in and we get a "women do it too"

Unbelievable

As I say, so often with the whataboutery.

Just awful.

Let us talk about men's violence here.

Try to not be rude and obstinate when people are trying to demonstrate a balanced perspective based on their experiences and minimising those with sarcasm and hostility.

Thanks.

It’s not a balanced perspective if it’s just an anecdote about someone you know.

For balance we need widely collected data. And that suggests that male violence is a far, far larger problem than female violence.

Potooooooooes · 05/05/2026 23:09

It is rude and obstinate to insert a tale of but women do it too into a thread about the horrors of the national epidemic of male violence* when women (the cunty kind) absolutely do not do it too on the same scale. There is no balance to be found between male violence and female violence.

Sorry if you find this hard to hear, the truth is painful.

A news article is a one off anecdote about someone none of us know.

I didn't realise data was required since an anecdote was provided at opening and a stats requirement wasn't stated as a prerequisite for the ability to engage in this conversation.

Why are you assuming I don't believe in male violence? I also believe poor parenting, by women, contribute to male violence.

I mean, I don't know why that is so upsetting. I thought we would have an intellectual discussion about how to "address the epidemic" rather than how to make @Potooooooooes the focus of the thread.

2 women a week dying at the hands of their partner or former partner is not and cannot be "balanced" by anecdotes about a MiL

Did you just actually blaming poor parenting by women for males committing femicide

GinJarRogers · 05/05/2026 23:18

I don’t know what the answer is but I’m also very concerned at what appears to be general apathy and acceptance towards this issue.

Even the reporting of male violence is minimising and skirts around the issue, see for example the headline of this article about the case you mention “Woman died after ex 'with explosive device forced entry to house'”. Surely it should be “Man kills woman by causing explosion after forcing entry into her house”. It may seem a minor point but it is important because naming the issue is recognising it but if you can’t recognise a problem then you can’t address it.

I assumed you were familiar with the statistics and general context of the problem of male violence, particularly when it comes to killing loved ones or family. The newspaper report is being discussed in that context. And that is why any attempt to present women as being equally prone to inflicting violent acts upon others tends to wind people up.

yyy, so minimising. Not naming it.
